WelcomeHello and welcome to this years fantastic March St George’s Fayre.

As always you we hope you will find lots to entertain you and your family - whatever your age or background. We think there will be something here for everyone!

This year - more than ever before - we have a packed programme of events and entertainments for you to enjoy. We have three main performance areas: The Market Place, the Library area and ‘Georges Square’. Local performers will be showing their talents and entertaining the crowds. Please do give them your support - it’s not easy to get up on a stage in front of people.

This event is organised by Fenland District Council working together with several community organisations and receives grant funding from the Town and District Councils. We should all be grateful for this support as without their help we could not stage this exciting event for you. In addition we would like to thank local artist John Abbott for organising and sponsoring the Open Art Competition - the entries will all be on display in the Library on the day - why not take a look?

Once again there is the popular Shop Window Competition run by the March Chamber of Commerce and this year there is also a Photographic Competition. See pages 24-27 for details of all the competitions.

Throughout the programme you will find details of the performers and activities available throughout the day. Turn to the centre pages for the Programme of Events and page 17 for the map.

The Fenland Arts Association has been supporting the Arts in Fenland for over 25 years and has been responsible for organising the entertainment at St George’s Fayre in March since it first started in 2010. Over the past years it has also been involved in many of the Festivals around the District and was responsible for promoting the recently held Search for a Star showcase.

The organisation’s website (www.fenlandarts.org.uk) lists local events, clubs and venues as well as events further afield.

Since the launch of the Lunch & Film Club in 2012, which is held in the Town Hall on the first Thursday in every month, the membership has grown significantly and there are now some eighty members of our older community who enjoy fellowship, food and a film. As a registered charity Fenland Arts Association is reliant upon funding and the support of local volunteers.

This year there will be a parade from the Further Education Centre starting at 10.30am and making its way to the Market Place.

The parade will then walk to the Staging Area at Georges where they will stop and the Highland Band will parade. The Town Crier, Bernard Keane will welcome the Mayor of March, Jan French to officially open the event. The parade will then continue on to Bevills Place where it will disperse.

Whittlesey Wind EnsembleThe Whittlesey Wind Ensemble was formed only last September with 12 members but by the Christmas Concert at St.Mary`s Church Whittlesey we had 21 players. We had actually only been together for six weeks when we gave our first public performance at Holy Trinity Church in Coates. Since Christmas we have expanded our repertoire and performed at the Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey on February 23rd and St. Andrews Church in Whittlesey.

We are still looking for more players to expand our musical repertoire and build the reputation of the group, in particular Bass Clarinet, Cornet/Trumpet, Horns, Trombone, Bass and Percussion (Kit/Tuned).

MADAOS have performed shows in March since their formation in 1957. Their membership has a wide age range and they perform in a wide variety of musical styles including musicals and revue style shows. Later this year they will be producing a pantomime for the first time. MADAOS now have a group of performers who can entertain at local community events and venues, singing a wide variety of songs.

The troupe have been established since 2005, and in that time have performed at many various functions.

Dance and Twirl are based in Farcet village; we dance to a selection of modern dance routines using poms and batons.

The troupe have proven themselves to be a great success, with a unique feature of the troupe being the Pink Z4 that provides backing music at the outdoor events.

20Twenty Theatre run youth theatres in March, Chatteris and Whittlesey and have over 130 young people attend every week aged from 6 - 19. Shows are performed in the wonderful theatre space at March Town Hall and as well as acting, singing and dancing, young people are also involved in the Direction, Stage Management, Sound, Lighting and Set Design.

This summer the groups will be performing; Annie, Jungle Book and Peter Pan.

Dance ManiaA professionally trained dancer, choreographer and teacher, Lisa Dickinson founded Dance Mania in 1996. The group caters for all of the community from tots to adults and uses traditional through to modern styles, constantly keeping up with current dance trends and music.

Dance Mania produce four shows a year run by a highly skilled technical team. Many past pupils have gone on to train at top London stage schools and to work in the professional field of dance.

Dance Mania pride themselves in offering a respectful, friendly atmosphere. Everyone is welcome and no-one is ever turned away.

Peterborough Highland Pipe Band is a uniformed marching band that has been promoting Scottish Highland music through public performances in and around the City of Peterborough for over 60 years. We help organisations like The Royal British Legion to raise much needed funds for their various charities.

The Performers

March Mummers formed in the Autumn of 2011 to perform a traditional Folk Play.

A mummers’ play is a traditional entertainment that usually involves St George and a fight with The Devil (Beelzebub) or some other character, after which The Doctor is called to bring the fallen back to life again.

The play which March Mummers perform is a construct of several local plays as compiled by Mike Herring of the Peterborough Folk club in 1968 and contains all of the usual characters.

The stage name for Adrian Bond, a local lad to March, who has been playing & performing since the age of 11.

Local Fenland Arts & Fenland Associations have assisted Bondy through the years and helped him reach his level of professional achievement - earning his living from singing.

Bondy now helps other local artists to achieve their dream by guiding, assisting and nurturing them all he can.

He now runs the acoustic session at Georges Open Mic four times a year, to record & optimise local artists’ sound.

Burrowmoor School

The Burrowmoor School band and choir meet weekly. Every child from year 1 to year 6 is taught an instrument during whole class music lessons. In addition to this, children at Burrowmoor are offered music lessons in a variety of instruments from Reception to Year 6 including recorder, violin, flute, clarinet, cello, guitar, drums, oboe, ukulele, cornet, tenor horn and trombone. We encourage those who learn an instrument to join the school band as they become more

accomplished. We are proud of our vocalists and instrumentalists and enjoy taking part in community events to show off our talents!

Sarahs Street Style Dance is a locally run street dance school that is now in its fourth successful year. With nearly 200 students and 13 weekly run classes, we are still expanding and are constantly in demand. Today a few of the many groups that take part in our classes will be performing for you. They consist of our Elite team that compete and perform nationally and our normal street dance class crews that perform all over the Fenland area.

All Saints Interchurch Primary School Choir

‘All Saints Interchurch Primary School Choir has approx. 35 members ranging from 7 year s to 11 years. The children practice weekly with Mrs Beeson, and are very hard working and committed. Singing is a very important part of school life, and we are very proud of the standard we have reached. All Saints has recently gained a national Silver Sing Up Award. The choir sings a range of songs from traditional to pop, and is in much demand to sing in the community – at church events and at care homes – especially at Christmas. We are delighted to be asked to sing at the St George’s Day Fayre.

Strangeworld have been described as playing “progressive folk music” and as “taking the folk/roots genre and giving it a real makeover”. Played exquisitely on traditional instrumentation including cello, oboe, bassoon, cittern, mandolin and piano accordion (amongst many others), the band use influences from the musical spectrum to create a sound that is both unique and mesmerising. The listener is taken on a wonderful musical journey, gripped in its magical spell.

The Performers

Ely & Littleport Riot is a Fenland women’s morris side who perform traditional and original dances in the Border style. The side was formed over 20 years ago and in that time they have danced the length and breadth of the UK and parts of Europe.

The Ely and Littleport Riot are named after the bread riots of 1816 that spread from Littleport to Ely. On the second day of rioting terms were offered and accepted at Ely market square but ‘free beer’ and a celebration encouraged a minority to continue rioting. The riot was eventually quelled by the First Royal Dragoon Guards, the Royston Troup of Volunteer Cavalry and local militia. In all twenty four rioters were prosecuted and sentenced; five were hanged, nine were deported to Botany Bay and the rest received jail terms of one year. Soon after, those serving a jail sentence were also transported to Australia. A memorial to the five hung can still be seen on the side of St Mary’s church tower, Ely.

Bourne Borderers MorrisA mixed side from Bourne in Lincolnshire, performing stick dances based on the traditional dances of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire known as Welsh Border Morris. They are known by their distinctive green and yellow tattercoats, black faces and bells, and for our loud, energetic and colourful dancing!

Craft Fair, St Peter’s Church HallThe craft fair in St Peter’s Church Hall is once again managed by the FenCraft Fairs partnership. There will be a selection of craft stalls each of which will be exhibiting a wide range of Artists’ & Crafters’ skills throughout the day.

Following the success of last years event the museum is extending opening hours from 10.30am until 5pm.

Principle attractions will be a potters wheel on which members of the public will be able to attempt throwing a pot. In the museum yard will be two old farm tractors which will be available for demonstration and small stationary engines will also be running.

The museum will be arranging a short guided street walk giving a historical tour of part of the town. Anyone wishing to participate in the walk should assemble in the museum front yard ready for a 3.30pm start. All the museum’s usual displays will be available for inspection.

Entrance to the museum is free but contributions towards it’s upkeep would be welcome.

This year Fox Narrowboats will be offering ½ hour boat trips on their day hire boat “March Adventurer” to showcase their day hire and holiday experience as well as supporting the Sue Ryder Hospice at Thorpe Hall.

£2.50 per adult, £1.50 for each accompanied child.

Trips will commence on the hour and half hour from 10am – 4.30pm Bookings can be made in advance by visiting the Marina on Monday – Saturday 9am-5pm or Sundays 10-4pm, or you can book on the day at our stall at the Fayre. Maximum passengers per trip 10 persons.

The Fox Narrowboats stall will be situated by the Town Bridge and trips will depart from there.

Photographic CompetitionThis year, the St George’s Fayre Committee have thrown open the gates to the community to take part in a Photographic Competition. We want to encourage amateurs and enthusiasts to ‘click’ with their cameras, their phones, their video cameras and take thousands of images, and upload them to our Facebook Page (St Georges Fayre - March), where they will be verified and displayed.

There is a wealth of expertise in March, with a high percentage of the community taking great pride over the images they take, and with new technology the opportunity to gain recognition from your hobbies has never been greater.

As St George’s Day is a celebration of everything English, the theme of the competition is England and Community, with the aim of taking images from dawn to dusk (and beyond!) on the day of St George’s Fayre.

The winner of the competition will be awarded a prestigious trophy to hold for the year, £100 prize money is available and their photos will be used to promote next year’s events as well as being displayed in our local newspapers and on Fenland District Council website.

How to Enter

Take your photo and upload your image to the St George’s Fayre - March Facebook Page, to the “Photo Competition” album. Images should be limited to the specification as dictated by Facebook.

The image should be based on the theme England and Community. Up to three entries may be submitted by any one entrant. Please ensure your images have your name as the title e.g. “Joe Smith 1”, “Joe Smith 2”, “Joe Smith 3”. Please then “Like” the “St Georges Fayre - March” Facebook Page so that we can keep you informed of results.

Videos should be no more then 5 minutes in length.

There are two classes for entry - Under 16 and Over 16. There will be categories for Best Video in Class and Best Still Image in Class.

If you have difficulty uploading the image you can pop into Georges in the High Street and they will assist you to upload onto the site.

The Shop Window Competition for local businesses is once again organised by March Chamber of Commerce with a prize of £100 to the business that is the most creative with the theme “England through the Ages”. The Window Competition will also link in with a Children’s Competition of “Spot the Dragon”.

Businesses around March will have a dragon hidden somewhere in their window. All children that correctly spot all of the dragons and write down the colour of the dragon’s belly and which shop window he appears in will be put forward for a raffle to win one of ten £10.00 vouchers from March Chamber of Commerce, to use in any participating shops. Runners up have the chance to win a voucher for a £30 meal for two at Georges.

The Art Competition sponsored by John AbbottAn open multi-media competition for local artists of all ages. The theme is ‘Water World’ and artists are invited to submit entries in a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, carving, collage etc and the subject must celebrate ‘Water World’, the key to life on earth. There will be three age groups with winner’s prizes in each:

The final judging will take place during the St George’s Fayre and winners will be announced at 1.30pm at March Library. All entrants in the Under 10 age group will received certificates marking participation. There will be winners’ trophies and prizes in each age group and winners will be notified personally, announced in local press and also by public announcement on the day of the event. all entries will be available for personal collection from March Library from Monday 22nd April 2013.

How to Enter

Create and sign your entry depicting the world of water and complete an entry form available from March Library, Paninis, Storey’s Arts & Crafts or Georges. Forms are also available from schools in March and online at www.fencraftfairs.com. Attach the form firmly to your entry and take the completed work into March Library no later than Thursday 18th April at 4.00pm when short listing will take place. Final judging will be on Sunday 21st April during the Fayre.

1. Drawn, painted and collage images must not measure larger than 16 x 12 inches.2. Sculpture must not be taller or wider than 36 inches.3. Drawings, pictures and collages may be mounted and framed if you desire, but this is not essential and the competition organisers cannot take responsibility for any damage arising. Rotary, the world’s first service club, was formed in 1905 in Chicago and today there are 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide and in the UK, 55,000 members in 1,855 clubs. Their motto is ‘Service Above Self ’ and the strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.

The Rotary Club of March meets at The Conservative Club, every Monday evening at 7.30pm. The club does support worldwide projects, like ‘End Polio Now’ and the purchase of the famous Rotary Shelter Boxes, which save lives in catastrophic events around the world, but most of the club’s effort goes into local projects.

These projects include taking under privileged ‘Kids Out’ for the day, taking ‘blind bowlers’ out to a tournament, a young chef ’s competition and a youth orchestra concert, to raise money for their instruments. A variety of fund raising events are undertaken to fund these projects.

The March Chamber of Commerce has always been a key player in organising the St George’s Fayre; its input is vital to ensure the traders views are voices are heard by the committee. March has a varied High Street that is shared by many business sectors. In part, the aim of the St George’s Fayre is to showcase the local businesses and what they offer to you the community.

The benefits of small independent traders and the relationships they build help to hold a communities together.

As many of our members as possible will be open on Sunday 21st April with the aim of meeting new customers and showing their goods. All members of March Chamber of Commerce welcome the chance to socialise and celebrate with their customers at St George’s Fayre .

March LionsMarch Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, an organisation with over 1.35 million members worldwide in 208 different countries. The motto of Lions is “We Serve”.

March Lions organise the annual Gala on West End Park as part of the March Summer Festival weekend, we also take part in the St Georges Fayre. We assist with the Town’s Christmas lights switch on and in the lead up to Christmas we can be found with our Christmas float with Santa in attendance.Any donations we receive from the people of March are spent locally for the benefit of local charities and organisations.

The Middle Level Watermen’s Club was founded in 1963. It has a strong membership with most makes and models of river craft represented.

The club has premises at Sutton Staithe where they socialise in the on site Clubhouse and three or four of their boats are moored there. A new site - now known as ‘Skoulding’s Rest’ - situated between Marylebone Road Bridge towards the Town Centre - is being developed. Completion this year will provide the town with a modern boating facility, which includes moorings and the construction of a slipway, seating, trees, plants, bird boxes etc., transforming a previously unloved section of riverbank. Rob Skoulding opened this project last November and a plaque commemorating his father’s interest in boating has been erected.

This year, on 24th, 25th and 26th August, the club will celebrate its 50th Anniversary at both sites. Boats from the Association of Nene River Clubs, together with tourist boats, will attend the birthday events. The recent refurbishment of the pump out at the Town Centre will complement all this work.

The March Society is a civic society which aims to represent the needs of the local community and was launched in 2007. We aim to promote and preserve all that is the best in the man-made and natural environment of March.

We aim to promote high standards of planning and architecture in March; to inform about the geography, history, natural history and architecture of our town; to support the protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest and to uphold civic pride in March.

Our meetings are on the 1st Wednesday of each month: either talks in March Library with speakers on subjects relating to March, or heritage walks. We work with the local authorities and other groups and are involved in Heritage Open Days in March.

We will have two displays in Ye Olde Griffin at St George’s Fayre, on March’s Heritage, and the activities of The March Society. Come and talk to us at our table near Market Square about your concerns and the good things about March. Join us and help to make a difference.
