First Year Drama Club Production of

Top Prizes at Windsor Art Festival

Congratulations to the following girls whose excellent work was recognised by the Windsor Festival, in its annual competition. Commended for Painting: Irem Ozturk and Helene El-Bacha; commended for Drawing: Aastha Rattha and Violet Li. Winning in the Sculpture category: with 2nd place Tanya Gecim for her ‘Apple’ piece and in 1st place for Louise Schofield.

Bank of England Challenge

I competed at the Bank of England Challenge Competition on Tuesday 20 November with three other girls from St George’s. It was an amazing experience. Our task was to make a 15 minute presentation explaining which interest rate to set, in order to reach the target 2% inflation. Before the challenge, we did a lot of research on topics such as recent government spending, university fees, oil prices and energy prices. These statistics allowed us to reach a conclusion of keeping the interest rate at 0.5%. I really enjoyed doing the challenge and would love to do it again next year.

Careers Preparation

At the end of October and early November the Fifth Year had their Morrisby feedback interviews conducted by CES which proved to be of all round interest and assistance in planning and making those all so important decisions regarding their future choices.

The Careers Advisor, Mr Moran, will be running the careers PSE inductions for the Second and Third Years next term. The Second Year will have a session that will involve an open discussion on the role of women in the work-place past and present, guided along with a prepared excel slide show. The Third Year will have a session in the ICT rooms where they will be undertaking the ‘Probe’ exercise. This is a careers software package designed specifically for their age group where they will have the opportunity to input their careers preferences, likes and dislikes, with a view to obtaining a personal print out on future possible careers options. At this stage, this is a lot of fun.

Extended Project Trip to Royal Holloway

A successful trip to Royal Holloway, University of London was held for twenty-four of our Lower Sixth EPQ students recently. The trip involved a library induction and a study session appraising relevant academic sources from various websites. A useful exercise in preparing for those future university papers! A quick trip to the campus shop was also enjoyed by all.

Maths Challenge

Well done to everyone in the Sixth Form who took part in the Senior UK Mathematical Challenge. The Senior Challenge is taken by all 16-19 year olds studying Mathematics A-level, or equivalent, in the UK and also at many international locations. The top 60% receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate. Congratulations to the following girls who have earned certificates for their performance.

Public Speaking

Thank you and Congratulations to the following girls who took part in the Rotary Club of Ascot ‘Youth Speaks’ event, held here at St George’s on Monday 26 November. From the First Year, Fiona Allen, Catherine Lee and Sophia Lyons spoke on the subject of “Olympics - Disaster or Triumph”. In the Senior Event, St George’s was represented by 2 teams; Team A on the subject of “Girls are Loud” were Jennifer Blackburn, Tanya Gecim and Lydia Tufnell and Team B on the subject of “Magic or Musak -105, Oh What’s it for? (105.4)” were Lorraine Lam, Demilade Osunsina and Louise Schofield. The girls presented their arguments very well and learnt a great deal.

Christmas Card Competitions

Congratulations to Brooke Tilley (1Y) whose card design was the winning entry in a competition for Larklands Care Home and to Scarlet Arbib (2Y) whose David Hockney inspired card design was chosen to be used by Mrs Owens this Christmas.

Wine Tasting with Eton College Wine Society On Friday 23 November, the Sixth Form had the opportunity to enjoy an evening of wine tasting and cheese sampling with the Wine Society from Eton College. The night started with a short introduction from a wine connoisseur which was very interesting. We were taught the art of wine, including how to sample it and how to search for different flavours such as gooseberry and pear. We were also able to try a selection of cheeses that complemented the wine delightfully. Mrs Major and teachers from Eton served us the wine throughout the night and were excellent waiters and waitresses! Everybody enjoyed the evening thoroughly as conversation flowed, as did the wine. We all hope to use our new found wine knowledge in the future effectively and hope Eton enjoyed the night as much as we did!

Boarders’ Trip to Winter Wonderland

The boarders’ trip to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park was a huge success, not least because some of the cast from Made in Chelsea were there. Some of our girls skated with them and others even managed to get pictures and have a chat!

Parent Association Winter Social

The Parent Association organsied a wonderful social for parents and girls at the end of November, with mulled wine and gifts on sale; it was a lovely occasion.

Charity FUNdraising

In the run up to Christmas, each year group has organised an event to raise money for their chosen charity. The Second Year braved the snow to do a sponsored run around the school (pictured above) and the First Year (below) organised a Secret Gift Bag Card Game. Other events included candy canes being sold by the Fourth Year. Final tallies will be announced in the new year.

Another Readathon Triumph!

Once again girls in the First and Second Years have followed the tradition at St George’s of participating in the annual reading event organised by Readathon, a charity based on sponsored reading. The charity divides the sponsorship money between organisations that support children and young people with cancer; Hodgkin’s disease; leukaemia; epilepsy; blood disorders; neuro-degenerative conditions or brain-injuries. The girls have thoroughly enjoyed reading their books and at the same time have managed to raise a magnifi cent sum to contribute to such a worthwhile charity.

This year, the girls have raised the fantastic sum of £631.20. In addition, the school has donated the allocation of free books given as reward for their efforts to Readwell, the charity providing reading material for hospitalised children. St George’s has been supporting Readathon annually over the last 20 years, organised by Mrs Moyles in the English department, and this latest contribution will be added to the total of well over £22000 already raised by St George’s for this charity. Well done to all those who took part!

Christmas Shoeboxes

A huge thank you to all the girls who made shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child; we collected 68 shoeboxes which will go to those in need this Christmas.

Congratulations to Mr Garnett, Head Chef at St George’s, who has been selected to Captain the GB Team in Argentina at the World Gliding Championships in January 2013. He has also been appointed overall British Team Manager by the British Gliding Association, managing all the major teams for international competitions. This is a great achievement, we are very proud of him and look forward to hearing all about it in January.

5 Minutes with … Name: Mr S Cornish

Job Title: Domestic Bursar

What did you do before St George’s? I served in the Army for 34 years, initially as Chef working in many high profile locations. Latterly as a Logistics Officer looking after equipment, personnel and supplies.

What is your greatest achievement? Gaining the Queens Commission after 20 years as a Non-Commissioned Officer.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Driven, organised and conscientious.

Who is/was the most influential person in your life? My parents. I grew up on a small farm in Devon and family life was pivotal to its success. This has stayed with me throughout my travels; the support of your family cannot be underestimated.

What was the last book you read? The Hades Factor by Robert Ludlum; a good holiday thriller!

What would you do if you won £2m in the Lottery? Buy my children a house each so they may concentrate on their careers and enjoy life’s pleasures.

If money was no object where would you travel to? I have always wanted to go to Sydney, Australia. I have travelled through mainland Europe extensively and the Australian culture and life style intrigues me after serving with members of their Armed Forces.

What is your ultimate Desert Island Disc? Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares 2U. Released at a poignant moment in time.

Which person alive or dead would you most like to spend a day with? Monsieur Alexis Soyer – An inspirational Victorian Celebrity Chef. Famous for his work at the Reform Club in London. Concerned with the plight of soldiers in the Crimea he invented the “Soyer Field Stove” working closely with Florence Nightingale to prevent food poisoning, malnutrition and cholera.

Sport LifeSwimming v St Mary’s and Queen Anne’s

On Tuesday 20 November the U12, U13 and U14 swim teams competed in a gala against St Mary’s and Queen Anne’s, Caversham. The girls competed in events such as the IM, Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breast Stroke and Butterfly. They also competed in the Medley Relay and the Freestyle Relay. All girls competed well and put 100% effort in. Overall, the U13s came joint 2nd whilst the U12 and U14 came 3rd. Special mentions go to Esme French, Grace Wiszowaty and Victoria Wyatt who all won their individual races.

U13 SE Berks Netball Tournament

On Wednesday 5 December the U13 A and B teams played in the SE Berks netball tournament. The girls played well in very cold conditions and remained motivated throughout.

The A team played 3 games in their group, losing two and winning one. This meant they made it through to the quarter finals of the cup where unfortunately they were knocked out by Dolphin School. The B team were strong against all of their opponents and managed to make it through to the final of the plate competition.

The final was against Heathfield who were a very strong side. The girls unfortunately lost this match but were awarded with silver medals. Their teamwork and commitment was very impressive.Special mentions go to Anna Murray for her role as centre in the B team, and Grace Wizsowaty who made some fantastic interceptions.

U13B Netball v Charters School

On Wednesday 21 November the U13B team played in a match against Charters. Due to poor weather the match was played in the sports hall and consisted of two 8 minute halves. At half time the girls were losing 2-1. The standard of play however, was very high. The girls were focused and determined to pull the game back.

The second half was strong with the spacing on court allowing more accurate passes to be made. All girls worked hard and played well, putting what we have been working on in training into practice. The final score was 7-5 to St. George’s!

A special mention goes to Jenny Wood as her movement in the circle and her timing which was much improved.

U12B v Charters

The U12B team continued their Netball success against Charters on Wednesday and didn’t let the conditions of playing in the Sports Hall affect them. Girls continued to work hard to get into space and kept the ball moving around court superbly. They also marked tightly and made plenty of interceptions to make the game a tough one for Charters.

The girls finished the game with a win of 7 – 2 win and Kalyca Samra was awarded player of the match.

U12A v Marist

All U12A team girls were excited to be playing the Marist as it was the second game they had played against each other this season. Last time these teams met it was a very close game but St George’s girls were able to bring home a win.

This match proved to be equally close with all girls playing some great netball. The girls continued to keep possession of the ball and marked tightly; however the Marist defence proved to be very strong which did make our job tough. The Marist came through with a few late goals which resulted in a 7-9 loss. Despite this the girls should not be disappointed as all played superbly, with the player of the match going to Ruby Winter.

U12B v Marist

The under 12B team faced the Marist in their second game of the night and despite being tired from the previous game they went out with determination. All the girls worked hard to create space to make passes; however the Marist were not going to make this game easy for us and marked tight throughout. Despite this very tough game the girls did not give up and this resulted in a 5 -5 draw. The player of the match was awarded to Katie Sedgwick for her excellent movement and ability to link the attack and defence.

Lacrosse v St Swithun’s

The St George’s lacrosse teams played their final matches of the term against St Swithun’s on Saturday 8 December.

The U12 team walked away with a loss but they played really well in only their third match as a team. Great play was seen by Catherine Lee in goal as well as Emily-Louisa Brett.

The U13 squad won 8-1 with great play seen by Eleanor Hardie in goal and Ella Davis in defence. Great job by these two girls!

Despite being 4 players down, the U14 team also won with a score of 8-4. Great play was seen by Stephanie Bankole on defence with 4 caused turnovers as well as Emily Hughes in the midfield.

The U15 squad won their match 10-5 and transitioned the ball really nicely as a team. Great play was seen by Caitlin McArthur and Emma Sedgwick both in goal and on the field, with Emma recording 2 saves and 3 ground balls, and Caitlin making 5 saves.

Finally, the 1st team won their first match of the season 8-3! This was a great game for the 1st who have worked really hard to improve as a team! Great play was seen by Lily Bond, Jessica Gray and Lavinia Jones.

As a lacrosse staff we are all very proud of the improvements made and our successes as a team so far this year! Keep it up!
