RCIA (Preparation for Easter Sacraments)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process of inquiry and discernment for those who wish to come into full communion with the Catholic faith and are above the age of infant baptism. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

EZ 33:7-9; PS 95:1-2, 6-9; ROM 13:8-10; MT 18:15-20

Today’s readings are all about relationships. Among the many lessons we have learned as a result of the global pandemic is the deep importance of the relationships and communities in our lives. Our families, our neighbors, our friends and our parish family need us and we need them — not just for survival, but to be our best selves, and to help each other on the path to heaven.

Our readings today show us how we can be good stewards of these vital relationships, beginning with the first reading from the prophet Ezekiel. God says

to Ezekiel, “You… I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me.” Because of our

Baptism, we are all “watchmen” for one another. We have been given the gift of our Catholic faith and we have a responsibility to lovingly and generously share that gift. As Christian stewards, we must take this call to heart every day of the week and in every setting in which we find ourselves.

This can seem overwhelming at first. Are we called to keep a sermon in our back pocket at all times? Not exactly.

St. Paul gives us simple instruction in our second reading from Romans to guide us in our dealings with others. He reminds us what Christ Himself

taught: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love is the overarching principle that guides us to be good stewards of our relationships and communities.

True love means seeking the good of the other. Sometimes, love requires us to speak up when it would be easier to remain silent — other times, love calls us to keep our mouths shut when we would

prefer to “put someone in their place.”

In our Gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus further refines this instruction on good stewardship of our relationships, even when they involve conflict. He

says, “If your brother sins against you, go and tell

him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.”

What timely advice for the modern-day steward. In this age of social media, it is tempting and all too easy to take to Twitter or Facebook to vent our frustrations about someone who has offended us. This is not love. But neither is allowing a brother (or sister) to sin against us without speaking up. Jesus teaches us to confront the offending person directly and discretely — with the goal of restoring the relationship if possible. This is how we steward our relationships even through rocky waters.

Later in this passage, Jesus speaks to us of the power

and beauty of community life. “If two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Christian stewards, God has designed us in such a way that we must help each other on the journey towards heaven. Let us take care to steward our relationships well.

2nd Collections:

Our second collection this weeknd is for The Catholic University of America. The Catholic University of America, located in Washington, D.C., is the national university of the Catholic Church. Founded in 1887, CUA offers students an excellent education in a faith-filled atmosphere that is grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. The Collection for The Catholic University of America underwrites scholarships to assist financially deserving students in completing their education at CUA in over 50 disciplines. Thank you for your generosity.

Our second collection next weekend (September 13) is for the Pontifical Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. This collection has been rescheduled from April 10, 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic. If you have already given to this collection, there is no need to give again - any donations received at that time were sent to this fund.

Sign ups are NO LONGER required to attend weekend Masses. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis. The side vestibule doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass. On Saturdays, the doors will not open early for the group rosary devotion – for the time being, we still must limit the amount of time spent in groups indoors. Parishioners are reminded to maintain a distance of 6 feet between themselves and others. Gathering after Mass is not permitted in the vestibule.

All parishioners who would like to receive the Eucharist, but are not yet comfortable attending Mass in person, are most welcome to call the office and either Father Paul or Deacon Joel will visit you at your home, outdoors or indoors, however you are comfortable.

The topic of racism in our Church can be a delicate and emotional one for many people. We cannot, however, as Catholics, simply ignore the issue and pretend it doesn’t exist. Over the next few weeks, we will post here a series of excerpts from: “The document Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love - A Pastoral Letter Against Racism was developed by the Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). It was approved by the full body of bishops as a formal statement of the same at its November 2018 General Meeting and has been authorized for publication by the undersigned. Msgr. J. [continued from last week] Walk Humbly with God:

To press forward without fear means “to walk humbly with God” in rebuilding our relationships, healing our communities, and working to shape our policies and institutions toward the good of all, as missionary disciples. Evangelization, which is the work of the Church, “means not only preaching but witnessing; not only conversion but renewal; not only entry into the community but the building up of the community.”31 Racism is a moral problem that requires a moral remedy—a transformation of the human heart—that impels us to act. The power of this type of transformation will be a strong catalyst in eliminating those injustices that impinge on human dignity. As Christians, we know this to be true, for with “God all things are possible” (Mt 19:26). It is the Lord who, by his grace, forgives and restores us to these relationships and heals the wounds between us. After all, the aim of salvation history is reconciliation and entering the heavenly Jerusalem, a communion of all peoples and all nations.

To press forward without fear also means cooperating with God’s grace by taking direct and deliberate steps for change. It means opening doorways where once only walls stood. As bishops, we commit ourselves to the following actions with the hope that others, especially those in our spiritual care, will do likewise in their own lives and communities.

Acknowledging Sin Examining our sinfulness—individually, as the Christian community, and as a society—is a humbling experience. Only from a place of humility can we look honestly at past failures, ask for

forgiveness, and move toward healing and reconciliation. This requires us to acknowledge sinful deeds and thoughts, and to ask for forgiveness. The truth is that the sons and daughters of the Catholic Church have been complicit in the evil of racism.32 In his Papal Bull Dum Diversas (1452), Nicholas V granted apostolic permission for the kings of Spain and Portugal to buy and sell Africans, setting the stage for the slave trade. Even though subsequent popes strongly renounced and rejected the international slave trade, much to our shame, many American religious leaders, including Catholic bishops, failed to formally oppose slavery; some even owned slaves.

We also realize the ways that racism has permeated the life of the Church and persists to a degree even today. “For too long,” in the Church’s missions throughout the world, “the way to a fully indigenous clergy and religious was blocked by an attitude that was paternalistic and racist.”33 Not long ago, in many Catholic parishes, people of color were relegated to segregated seating, and required to receive the Holy Eucharist after white parishioners. All too often, leaders of the Church have remained silent about the horrific violence and other racial injustices perpetuated against African Americans and others.

Therefore we, the Catholic bishops in the United States, acknowledge the many times when the Church has failed to live as Christ taught—to love our brothers and sisters.34 Acts of racism have been committed by leaders and members of the Catholic Church—by bishops, clergy, religious, and laity—and her institutions. We express deep sorrow and regret for them. We also acknowledge those instances when we have not done enough or stood by silently when grave acts of injustice were committed. We ask for forgiveness from all who have been harmed by these sins committed in the past or in the present.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington Internship for the Volunteer Office

Current undergraduate students looking for a remote internship opportunity are invited to apply to the Outreach and Events Intern at Catholic Charities D.C. for the Fall semester. Worldwide Marriage Encounter

World Wide Marriage Encounter has cancelled all in-person weekends for this year. However, we have exciting news! There is a way for couples, priests and religious to join a virtual WWME experience from the comforts of their home. This experience will be in 7 sessions beginning on Monday, October 5th and end on Monday, October 26th. The sessions will be on Mondays and Thursdays from 7pm-9:30pm. The content of the sessions will be the same as given on in-person weekends. Maybe you can join us on this virtual experience.
