THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 49:1-7

Listen to me, O coastlands,

pay attention, you peoples from far away!

The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother's womb he named me.

He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me;

he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away.

And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”

But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;

yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God.”

And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant,

to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him,

for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and my God has become my strength--he says,

“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel;

I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,

to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers,

“Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves,

because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 40:1-12 Expectans, expectavi

1

I waited patiently upon the LORD; * he stooped to me and heard my cry.

2

He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; * he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.

3

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; * many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust in the LORD.

4

Happy are they who trust in the LORD! * they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods.

5

Great things are they that you have done, O LORD my God! how great your wonders and your plans for us! * there is none who can be compared with you.

6

Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! * but they are more than I can count.

7

In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure * (you have given me ears to hear you);

8

Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, * and so I said, "Behold, I come.

9

In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: * 'I love to do your will, O my God; your law is deep in my heart."'

10

I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; * behold, I did not restrain my lips; and that, O LORD, you know.

11

Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; * I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation.

12

You are the LORD; do not withhold your compassion from me; * let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever,

THE EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind-- just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you-- so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN: Christ, whose glory fills the skies HYMN 6

1 Christ, whose glory fills the skies, 2 Dark and cheerless is the morn Christ, the true, the only Light, unaccompanied by thee; Sun of Righteousness, arise! joyless is the day’s return Triumph over shades of night; till thy mercy’s beams I see; Dayspring from on high, be near; as they inward light impart, Day-star, in my heart appear! glad my eyes, and warm my heart. 3 Visit then this soul of mine! Pierce the gloom of sin and grief! Fill me, radiancy divine; scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 1:29-42

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes

away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON The Reverend Dr. Lloyd Henry

THE NICENE CREED BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen

and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God

from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the

Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE FORM III BCP 387 Deacon or other leader

The Leader and People pray responsively Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them.

Confession of Sin BCP 360 The Officiant says to the people Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

THE COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE

All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Holy Communion. We believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. You may either stand or kneel when receiving communion. Children may receive the Bread and Wine according to the discretion of the parents. Cross your arms over your breast to receive a blessing if you do not wish to receive either Bread or Wine. Because communion is complete in either form, reception of either bread or wine alone constitutes a full communion. If you need to receive Holy Communion in your pew, please notify one of the ushers.

1 I was sinking deep in sin, 2 All my heart to Him I give, Far from the peaceful shore, Ever to Him I’ll cling, Very deeply stained within, In His blessed presence live, Sinking to rise no more; Ever His praises sing. But the master of the sea Love so mighty and so true Heard my despairing cry, Merits my soul’s best songs; From the waters lifted me Faithful, loving service, too, Now safe am I. To Him belongs. [Refrain] Refrain: Love lifted even me, Love lifted even me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. 3 Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves; He will lift you by His love Out of the angry waves. He’s the master of the sea, Billows His will obey; He your savior wants to be, Be saved today. [Refrain]

At the end of Communion, all stand and join the Celebrant in saying

Post Communion Prayer BCP 366

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is dying that we are

born to eternal life. Amen.

THE BLESSING Go In Peace Go in peace and the peace of God be with you this day. Go in peace and the peace of God be with you always. Celebrate and share the joy! Celebrate new life! Go in peace and the peace of God be with you always.
