Holy Mass Intentions Paper Pulpit

“You better watch out! Better not cry! Better not pout! I’m telling you why,” You know the song. It’s a seasonal song. If you look at it closely and see what it’s telling our young people. It states that goodness is rewarded and of being watched: “He sees you when you’re sleeping. He knows when you’re awake. He knows if you’ve been bad or good be good for goodness’ sake.” For me it hints to a deeper level of doing the right thing, living as best we can- because it is the right thing to do and the best way to live. It can teach us in Advent Sunday we wait not for Santa, but for Jesus. I often think our songs and cultural traditions are really projections of ourselves and what we believe. We seem comfy with the idea of the good being rewarded and the bad being punished. Of course the bad people are always “someone else.” Meanwhile we console ourselves “I’m not perfect, may have done some not-so-nice things, but I’m a pretty good person.” St. John's message is a central theme of Advent. "Jesus is coming, and you better get ready (prepare) for what he brings and what he reveals about God." John the Baptizer invades the spirits of his hearers with a word of judgment -- his way of making us prepare for the coming Christ. St. John calls us to self-examination and confession -- demands that we look in the mirror at the reality of our lives and sin that separate us from God. Can we let St. John call us to look deeply at what we are without God? Can we let St. John help us to reflect on the causes that might contribute to hatred toward America that so many feel? Can we let St. John invade our serenity by examining the global role played by injustice, inequality, prejudice, ignorance, poverty, hunger, illiteracy, powerlessness, and hopelessness? We listen to him in this season by preparing the way for the Lord. Preparing the way so God may renew us and change us into people who act and live by following his commands and loving his children. Knowing that we are vulnerable and remembering that we are mortal can lead us to find a greater reliance on, and faith in, God in new and deeper ways; and our spiritual views and religious perspectives can transform us. Here’s a story, years ago, a man was shocked to read his own obituary in the morning paper. His death was mistakenly reported. But what shocked him most was how the obituary described him: as someone who had devoted his life to making weapons of war. That morning he resolved to turn his energies in a new direction: working for world peace and human betterment. That man was Albert Nobel, founder of the Nobel Peace Prize. We have about four weeks to prepare for Christ's coming. During that time, we ought to look into our hearts and see what we need to get rid of so that there is room for the Lord. Are you ready??? If not, what do you need to do differently? Advent is a good time to do it. Have a great and blessed week, Fr. Jim Trempe

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS

Thousands of senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests spend years working in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies – often for little or no pay. Now, their religious communities do not have enough savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and more. Almost 94 percent of donations aid senior religious. Please be generous.

You will find donation envelopes in the pews and in the gathering space.

Diocesan Annual Appeal

Diocesan Annual Appeal: You should have received your pledge card. If we all do our share, our parish not only makes its appeal target, but gets all money collected beyond our target back “tax free.” Last year we got back over $4,000. Many churches ask their membership to donate 10% of their income. Even though this idea is biblical, the Catholic Church asks each member to be generous. Since my arrival as your pastor, I have never once asked you about your giving or to increase you’re giving. I do ask everyone to contribute to the Annual Appeal. Please be generous, if you don’t give then someone else will be asked to make up the difference and that really is not fair. I am asking each family to donate something. Thank you for your generosity. I’d encourage you to go to the diocesan website to see how the funds are used. Here’s an overview. Seminary Education (cost to train a seminarian preparing for priesthood) - $700,000.

Priest retirement - $100,000. Priest’s healthcare - $80,000. Diocesan Offices - $1,650,000.

Catholic Education (Catholic Schools and Religious Education) - $1,000,000. Charity - $1,285,000. This is not the details, just an overview. Please look that up in the brochure you were went with your pledge card or check the diocesan website .
