  • The SFX Outreach Committee is looking

to energize and increase our food pantry

    donations!

Each month we’ll focus our food pantry donations

towards a specific category of foods. This is a fun

way to gather more donations for the needy in

    our community.

For the month of MARCH our focus is the

    annual Lenten Food Drive, coordinated

with Catholic Charities — look for the paper

bags in the back of church. The bag will suggest

donations based on your last name. Please

return the bags with your donations the weekend

    of Mar 30/31.

Of course, any donation is always welcome

    and greatly appreciated. Suggestions are

listed on a flyer in the back of church. Bring non-

perishable foods to church and place them in the

plastic bin in the vestibule and we’ll take care of

the rest! Your generous donations are taken

weekly to the Food Pantry at Our Lady of the

Wayside. Thanks for participating in this vital

    parish ministry!

    10% of Maryland’s population lives in food-insecure

households, meaning they’ve had difficulty at some time

during the year providing enough food for all their family

members. Your donation not only provides sustenance,

but also helps relieve the stress and anxiety that goes

along with not knowing if you have enough food to feed

yourself and your family. Thank you for all you do.

    Retreat for Survivors of Abuse

As the Church continues to minister to all

survivors of abuse, the Archdiocese of

Washington is sponsoring retreats for survivors.

The Archdiocese will offer a men’s retreat on

    Apr 5-7, and a women’s retreat on Apr 12-14,

for survivors. These retreats are an occasion for

survivors to reflect on God’s plan for their lives

and for healing through prayer and the

sacraments. For more information and to

register go to adw.org/the-way-retreat/ or call

    Deborah McDonald at 301-853-4466.

turnout and my sincere thanks goes out to Sarah

    organizing and promoting this event.

  • Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

For the greater glory of God...

    Dear Parish Family,

Lent begins this week on Ash Wednesday,

March 6. It is a great time for us to take stock of

our spiritual lives so as to set up good habits and

eliminate the bad ones. A good game plan is to

focus on four traditional spiritual practices of the

Catholic Church: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving, and

    Study. Below are some suggestions.

Prayer. Spend more time in intimate conversation

with God. Start your day together as a family

with a brief morning prayer and end it with

evening or night prayer. Or try to attend at least

one daily Mass a week. Join fellow parishioners

in praying the Stations of the Cross here at

St. Francis Xavier at 7pm in the church every

Friday during Lent, beginning Friday, March 8.

Fasting. During Lent, we fast on Ash Wednesday

and Good Friday (for those under 60), and give

up meat on all the Fridays in Lent. We’re also

encouraged to “give up” something we enjoy but

we can also give up things like complaining,

    gossip, grudges, and worrying.

Almsgiving. This means giving of your time,

talent and treasure to those in need. Some ways

we can help here at St. Francis Xavier are by

donating to the local food pantry and Snack Pak

for Kids. Another way to help the poor is by

participating in the 2019 Annual Appeal.

Study. Spend a few minutes each day reading

Holy Scripture or a good spiritual book. Or set

aside time each week to talk about the Sunday

Gospel with your family. The daily readings are

readily available by signing up for daily emails

from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops at

    www.usccb.org/bible/readings.

Let’s make this our best Lent yet!
