St. Francis Xavier Scholarship Fund We have begun to build up our Scholarship Fund for this year through your very generous donations. The opportu-nity to help a teen achieve their goal of furthering their education with the aid of this tax deductible fund is still available. Anyone who would like to support our young parishioners as they begin their college career or technical school is welcome to contribute to the St. Francis Xavier Scholarship Fund. Your checks may be mailed to the Par-ish Center at 1 Elm St. made payable to St. Francis Xavier Church with “Scholarship Fund” in the memo. Scholar-ships are awarded in June to graduation seniors who are continuing their education. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office. Thank you in advance.

“40 Cans In 40 Days” The Knights of Columbus Council 40 is sponsoring a “40 Cans In 40 Days” food drive during Lent. This drive started on Ash Wednesday and will continue through Easter. Each family is asked to donate 40 cans of nonperishable food during this season. There is a container in the back of the Church where this food can be dropped off. All of the donated food will be given to local food pantries and other programs for our neighbors that need assistance. This is part of the nationwide Knights of Columbus Food For Families initiative. Since 2012, the Knights have collected nationally more than 21.5 million pounds of food and $10.7 million in donations to ensure that families in our local communities have adequate access to nutritious food. Thank you for your participation.

Defending Our Religious Liberty Recently, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has actively defended religious liberty in court. For example, the solicitor general supported Jack Phillips, the custom-cake baker, by arguing that freedom of expression for ourselves requires freedom of expression for others. Also, when the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA) rejected a bus advertisement from the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., because it was religious, DOJ attorneys filed a brief objecting to WMATA’s religious discrimination. Legal motions like these are much-needed steps toward safeguarding religious liberty.

BEQUESTS We appreciate the thoughtfulness of parishioners who have made a bequest to St. Francis Xavier Parish. These charitable gifts build our parish endowment to help pass on our Catholic faith to future generations.
