Didyouknow...Theimportanceofusingyourenvelopestotithe?If you are asked to be a Godparent, a Sponsor for Baptism or Con irmation, one of the requirements is to obtain a letter from your parish that states you are in good standing and attend Mass regularly. The best way to do this is by using your contribution envelope. Each family has a family number, which is the number that is used to identify each family, and is printed on the outside of your envelopes. If you use regular envelopes, please legibly write your family number on the outside of the envelope. SponsorshipLettersIf you have been asked to be a Godparent for Baptism or a sponsor for Con irmation at St. Francis or at another parish, please contact the church of ice at least 7-10 days prior to the time you will need the letter. We have a form on our website you can download and complete and return to us for processing. BaptismRemindersWe are excited to welcome your child as the newest member of God’s family and our parish family through Baptism. For requirements and to sign up for the baptismal class, please contact Laura at the front of ice at 770-382-4549. AllSoulsMassThis year for the Mass on All Souls Day (Monday, November 2 at 8:30 am), we will have candles burning in memory of the parishioners we have lost from our parish in the past year. For those wishing to commemorate a loved one's passing beyond this past year, Fr. Juan will allow the family members to bring a candle to place by the Altar in their memory. The only requirements are that it must be a votive candle in a clear glass holder. The candles are to be taken home after the Mass. We will have envelopes available in our Narthex were you can add a loved one’s name for the Novena from November 2-10. You can drop the envelope in the collection basket or by the front of ice.

TREASURESFROMOURTRADITIONEight hundred years ago, the church's practice of penance underwent major revision as theologians, called scholastics, re lected on the practice of their day. By then, penance was normally a very secret rite, celebrated completely apart from the community. Public penance had mostly disappeared behind the walls of monasteries and the cloister grills of convents. The scholastics trimmed penance down to bare essentials, even sweeping aside age-old traditions like a laying on of hands and prayers of absolution. All that was left was the confessor's simple statement, "Ego te absolvo," "I absolve you." In 1614 a new ritual book tried to make penance more public and solemn. It suggested, but did not require, that the priest wear a surplice and stole, and hear the confession in a confessional. For the irst time, we have the directive that the priest be separated from the penitent by a screen, a rule that some bishops applied very strictly. By the 1940s, large numbers of Catholics availed themselves of the sacrament of confession every Saturday, and most people thought confession was a prerequisite for Communion. In some urban parish churches, confessionals were staffed, usually by the junior priest, for several hours every day, even during the celebration of Mass. It is remarkable how quickly things changed, but as we have seen, the system has collapsed before and what often comes next is an impulse of the Spirit, new life, and a fresh start. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. OutreachMinistry--HungerUpdate We just arrived home after attending an informative and heart breaking afternoon at the Atlanta Food Bank. Georgia has one of the largest food programs in the country. We, at St. Francis of Assisi, are only one of over 600 agencies in the state of Georgia. We have nearly 7,000 volunteers struggling to feed Georgians. Together, we serve 50 million meals a year. We survived a recession. However, the recovery is a mixed bag. We need jobs and wages to recover. We are presently 360,000 jobs behind. Regained jobs are not where the needs are most severe. More people need us today than ever before. Hunger Does Not Stereotype! As a constituent, you have more in luence that a lobbyist has. If you are inclined to go to the decision makers, look up your elected of icials. Remind your representatives that 15.8% of the American population is “food insecure.” Of that, nearly 30% are our children. Sixty percent of Georgia’s children receive free or reduced lunches at school. However, only 14% of those children receive summer meals. We are in serious need of summer food programs for our children. We must become informed and eager to change these statistics. We need more summer programs and more afterschool programs to keep our children healthy. We must deepen our personal commitment to our youngsters. It is interesting to know that the irst child nutritional school lunch program was introduced in 1946, during the Truman administration. The reason for the birth of this program was that too many young men were being rejected from becoming members of the armed services. Due to poor nutrition, the War Dept. was forced to reject many young men because they lacked bone density and had serious dental problems, especially tooth loss. Truman was determined to build a strong ighting force for the United States, thus, the school lunch program was born. Please consider looking at the Atlanta Food Bank Sight to become better informed. Then, consider your support of the Outreach Ministry and keep us in your prayers.
