Unable to react quickly enough, she panics and her car tumbles into a steep ravine on the opposite side of the road. The young woman is not seriously hurt, but because of the impact of the crash, she is trapped inside her vehicle. One can only imagine the anxiety, stress, and even panic that would set in as she waits minutes, hours or perhaps days before she is rescued. When she finally is, the gratitude she expresses to her rescuers would be incomparable. Now suppose this same woman is driving home on this same night. But, before she reached this same corner, a kindly farmer removed the downed tree branch, thus preventing her accident. Shouldn’t she be even more grateful to the farmer than those that rescued her from the ravine? After all, he not only “rescued” her, but prevented all of her suffering as well? Yet, quite likely, the young woman wasn’t even the slightest bit thankful for the farmer’s actions. Since the obstacle was removed before she ever encountered it, she remained ignorant of such a tremendous blessing. I wonder how often we fall victim to the same type of reality. I know that when I reflect on my own ingratitude, it makes me wonder why anyone, let alone God, does anything for me in the first place. How often I take some of my greatest gifts, gifts like faith, life, health, time, family, friends, jobs, food, clothing, shelter, cars, computers, land, equipment, opportunity, talents and what not for granted (and the list could go on and on and on!). After all, did any of us wake up this morning and rejoice that we were still breathing or give thanks for our loved ones or for the fact that we woke up under shelter? Did anyone enjoying their morning coffee give thanks for it, or the coffee maker, electricity, water, as well as the ability and resources both to procure and make it? Did any of us give thanks for our possessions, talents, opportunities or abilities this day? Did any of us today fall to our knees and give thanks for our supreme gift, the gift of our faith, which is the only gift that is eternal? Notice what the consequence of this ingratitude is. Ingratitude inevitably leads to the loss of happiness. Think of it this way: We are all familiar with the stereotype of “the best Christmas ever”. Well, what makes that special Christmas “the best Christmas ever”? Almost universally it is the experience of gratitude. In fact, if you take gratitude away, you take joy away as well. How? To answer this question, simply think about two children on Christmas morning. Both receive the same gifts, but one expected everything he received and the other received more than he ever expected. Clearly the second child is going to be happier, but why? The answer is because he is more grateful. For not having been bound by expectations, the second child more easily recognizes that his presents are gifts, not entitlements. As a result, he is far more grateful, and it is gratitude that infallibly leads to happiness. Yet how often do we make the mistake of the first child by thinking we are entitled to realities that are really gifts? Notice what this does to our gratitude. You see, it is nearly impossible to be grateful for something we think we are owed. Additionally, when the gift that we think we are owed is taken away, or not given at all, or given less than what we would like, we become upset, sad and even angry. The only fruit our entitlement mentality has reaped is misery precisely because it sucks away our gratitude. Of course, our ingratitude often runs much deeper than this. How often do we display tremendous ingratitude when it comes to situations like the one confronting the teenage girl in our second hypothetical example? After all, none of us knows all of the obstacles God has removed from our paths that have prevented so much suffering! Yet, have we ever, even in the slightest way, demonstrated any gratitude for these immense blessings? Much like the teenage girl prevented from crashing her car, we are usually totally oblivious to the true magnitude of the incomparable blessings we receive from God each and every day! In Christ,

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE · November 22, 2020

Friends, Imagine that a teenage woman is driving home on a stormy summer’s night. As she rounds the corner of the gravel road that leads to her home, she is confronted with a downed tree branch from the storm. Your family is invited to join us on Thursday, November 26, as we celebrate Thanksgiving Mass at our cluster parishes:

God our Father, Graciously accept from Your humble people a thankful heart and spirit. Everything we have and are able to share with others ul$mately comes from Your love of Your crea$ons. O"en we think that everything we have is our own crea$on; We ask you this day to create in us a spirit of gra$tude, that we may always know that all good gi"s come from You. We ask this through Christ our Lord, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen
