Readings for Sunday, April 21
Easter Sunday
1st Reading Acts 10: 34a, 37-43
2nd Reading Colossians 3: 1-4
Gospel John 20: 1-9
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw
the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not
with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other
disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he
saw and believed. - John 20: 6-8

What is liturgy?
In the Catholic Church we often talk about something we call "liturgy."
The question is: what is "liturgy?" Our new Director of Liturgical Music
has extensively studied the liturgy and music and so will be sharing bits of
her learning with the parish in several bulletin articles. I hope this can help
us all to deepen our participation in the Holy Mass. -Fr. Patrick
The three criteria given by the Catholic Church for liturgi-
cal music are that it be (1) holy, (2) possess a beauty that re-
veals God, and (3) transcend time and space. Last time, we
talked about what it means for music to be holy. This time, I’d
like to talk about the second quality, beauty that reveals God.
Beauty is often thought of as a subjective standard. What
is “beautiful” to one person is not necessarily “beautiful” to
another. My first goal is to define beauty in a more objective
sense. Beauty is the attractive power of truth. In order for
something to be “beautiful” in an objective sense, it must be
able to effectively reveal the truth. For liturgical music to be
“beautiful”, it should reveal the nature of what is taking place
in the liturgy, whether that is Mass, a sacramental celebration,
the Liturgy of the Hours, or another form of liturgy. For prac-
tical purposes, I’m going to focus on music within the context
of the liturgical celebration of Mass.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church elaborates on the
quality of beauty by saying that liturgical music should pos-
sess “beauty expressive of prayer.” (CCC 1157) Beauty is the
attractive power of truth, and liturgical language is essential
to effectively revealing that truth. Since salvation hinges on
the spoken word and sacred song is “closely bound to the
text”, it is important that the spoken, or in this case, sung,
words of the liturgy symbolize the heavenly realities effec-
tively. (Sacrosanctum Concilium 112) Thus, our liturgical mu-
sic should be very selective in its texts. Further, it is impor-
tant to have music that is of its very nature expressive of
prayer. Because Gregorian chant is “distinctive of the Roman
liturgy”, it is therefore inseparably united to prayer. (SC 116)
This is not to say that we can or even should only sing chant in
Mass. Rather, that musicians must choose music that, like
chant, effectively expresses the realities of the earthly liturgy
in a way that draws our minds and hearts to that perfect heav-
enly liturgy.
Until next time, keep on singing!

Please pray for our fellow parishioners
Please call the parish office with your requests for parishioners who
are ill or in need of prayers to be published in the bulletin - both the
printed and online versions. Privacy laws require that all requests be
initiated by a member of the immediate family.
Names will be published in a total of 12 bulletins (about three
months). If at the end of that time, the person wishes to remain on the
list, he/she will need to call the parish office and share that request.
The bulletin prayer list only includes the names of parishioners.
Names of non-parishioners, friends and neighbors can be added to our
prayer chain. To be added to the list, please contact Katie in the parish
office at 262-377-1070, ext. 221 or [email protected].
Easter décor Easter décor Easter décor Easter décor If you would like to make a donation toward flowers and other items
to decorate the church for the Easter season, please use the special enve-
lope in your contributions packet.
If you don’t receive contribution envelopes, please stop at the Infor-
mation Station to obtain a flower donation envelope. Place your dona-
tion in the collection basket, mail it to the office or drop it off at the
parish office on or before Wednesday, Apr. 17.
Discernment to guide leadership selection
It’s time again to begin the selection process for new members of the
Parish Pastoral Council. All parishioners are invited to nominate candi-
dates - either themselves or a fellow parishioner - to serve on this advi-
sory body. Three seats, each with a term of three years, will be filled. All
completed, signed nomination forms must be submitted to the parish
office no later than Monday, Apr. 29.
Please think and pray about possible candidates. There is no limit to
the number of nominees who can be included on the nomination slate.
Those who are nominated by others will be contacted and asked
whether they will say “yes” to being a candidate.
If you have questions about the Pastoral Council or the nomination
and selection process, please contact Jan Konkol at 262-375-1409.

would like to help lead kids and youth in a week long, fun-
filled faith adventure, email or call Mrs. Crom at
[email protected] or 262-377-1070, ext. 226 or Mrs.

Parents of first graders...
First Reconciliation and First Eucharist are usually cele-
brated during the child’s second grade year. Because of the
importance of these two sacraments and the amount of infor-
mation the child must learn, preparation begins during first
grade or sooner.
Preparation for these sacraments can be done through St.
Francis Borgia Christian Formation classes or St. Francis Bor-
gia School.
Parents who home school their children should contact
Chris Crom, director of Child Ministry, at 262-377-1070, ext.
226 or [email protected].
Chris is also the contact person for any other questions
parents might have. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
