Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

November 20, 2016

I rejoiced because they said to me, “We will go up to the house

of the L .” — Psalm 122:1

My Dear Parishioners,

Once again, here are some of my scattered thoughts for this week . . .

1. As we come to the end of the liturgical year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, the King of the Universe. This feast was established by Pope Pius XI ninety years ago to confront secularism and communism at that time. Almost a century later this Feast becomes even more significant and challenging. It is also the last Sunday of the Jubilee Year of Mercy—during this year Pope Francis invited us to reflect on this — “Jesus is the face of the Father’s mercy.” Next Sunday we begin Advent.

2. As we celebrate this great Feast of Christ the King we need to ask ourselves: Who or What really rules our lives? We have been praying, day after day, week after week, for the Kingdom to come—whose Kingdom is it? Of course, Christ’s Kingdom, but His Kingdom doesn’t have a building, a castle, a palace or a court . . . It is not a place of royal fanfare and we cannot locate it on a map! It is a wonderful time to acknowledge that Jesus is our Lord and Savior —the King of the Universe who loved and saved us— the mercy of God who will always be with us and accompany us. Nothing can really separate us from his love and mercy.

3. We only find it within the human heart. The Cross is the great defining landmark. This is the Kingdom of Peace and Justice, the Kingdom of sacrificial love—the place where the greatest honor is not in how much you have or how much you control but how much you give up. A Kingdom is a place where we are called to love, to give until it hurts, nothing left. The Kingdom is the place not in power . . .but in powerless. It is where pure love reigns.

4. This is the Kingdom we celebrate today. This is the Kingdom we are preparing to welcome in a few weeks . . .

5. Is Jesus the King of my heart, my life, and my family? Do I really want to belong to this Kingdom and to this King?

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. What are we grateful for? I am very grateful to God, to this country, to this parish and to each and everyone of you who have generously built this parish family and continue to sustain it. As we celebrate this Thanksgiving each one of us are called to be grateful to God, our creator, and to one another. Father Eddie, the staff and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.

Please remember you are always in my prayers. Father Tom

Jubilee Year of Mercy November 20, 2016 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Jubilee Year Ends

Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus’ “royal portrait” is the cross. From this “throne,” the crucified “crown prince” welcomes by “executive pardon” the kingdom of mercy’s first citizen, a fellow criminal. The “Good Thief” requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: “Remember me when . . .” (Luke 23:42). “Today you will be with me,” King Jesus promises, “in paradise.” (23:43). Paradise, even for non-believers, is an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow creatures, and Creator. Today, we “good thieves” beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to remember that, although Jesus’ kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus’ returns, that kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus’ mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Lễ Chúa Giêsu Kitô Vua Vũ Trụ “…Tôi bảo thật anh, hôm nay, anh sẽ được ở với tôi

trên Thiên Ðàng." (Lc 23,35-43)

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
