Christmas Perspective
There was a time when my perspective of what Christmas was all about was way off. When I was a child, I would always watch the holiday specials that were shown throughout the month of December. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was one of my favorites of the cartoons that aired. I loved the antics of Snoopy, Woodstock, Lucy, and the whole Peanuts gang. The pathetic little tree that Charlie Brown bought always made me laugh, and the way that the kids sang at the end of the show, with their heads way up high so all you could see was their chin and mouth, was quite funny.
I truly enjoyed the cartoon, except for one part. There is a Peanuts character named Linus who carries a blanket. At one point in the cartoon Linus walks out on stage and gives a long speech. As I child, I always thought Linus was boring and his part did not belong in the cartoon. However, my perspective on Christmas has changed since I was a child. As I grew in understanding of my faith, what I had thought to be the worst part in the cartoon, I now consider the best. For those of you who have never seen “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” this is Linus’ speech (which is actually from the Gospel of Luke). Note: The translation is different from the one you might find in your bible, but the meaning is quite clear.
The shepherds in the field were keeping night watch over their flock. Suddenly, an Angel of the Lord appeared to them, as the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were very much afraid. The angel said to them: “Fear not! I come to proclaim good news to you, tidings of great joy to be shared by the whole people. For on this day, in the city of David, a savior has been born to you, the Messiah and Lord. Let this be a sign to you: in a manger you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes.” Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to those of good will.” (Luke 2: 8-14)
The joy of Christmas is about the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. May the birth of Jesus fill your hearts and the hearts of all people around the world, with peace, love, and joy.
Merry Christmas!

THE GIFT OF GOD’S WORD On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God’s Word. Because it is creative, God’s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God’s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God’s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God’s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God’s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Prayer with Scripture
We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

POPE FRANCIS TWEET FOR THE WEEK
Mercy is the concrete action of Gods love that,
by forgiving, transforms and
changes our lives.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION An old joke asks, “What time is Midnight Mass?” The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of “midnight” predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s celebration: John the Evangelist’s majestic theology of Christ’s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season. You still have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you’re officially late! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The blessing of the Christmas tree Each Christmas season, as we decorate our tree, we honor the past, remembering with each or-nament the years before. And we also make a promise to the future, when this year’s tree will be a memory. We circle the tree as a family and weigh its branches with our hopes and dreams. How much more special it will be if we bring our Lord to share this time with us, unifying us in His love, as well as our own. Try for example this simple Christmas tree blessing: When the family is gathered, start with a simple prayer of thanks for the family members gathered, the roof over your heads, the joy of the season. Then before the decorating is finished have each person hold back one ornament. Have each person hang their ornament saying: May this Christmas tree bring the blessing of … choosing a blessing they desire for the home or the world. Now turn on the lights and sing a verse of "O Come, O come, Emmanuel" or "O Christmas Tree."

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
