Dear Parents, Students and Other Parishioners, Thank you to those of you who gave me comments about the possibility of a different structure to classes for next year. Due to some new enrolments in Foundation over the holidays, we are staying with the current structure of separate Foundation community and then 2 communities of 2 homegroups for years 1 to 6 just as we have for the past 4 years. We have employed 2 new teachers to replace Ms Gayanji Egan and Ms Tania Ladson who will take Parental Leave. Ms Kelly Ann Donald and Ms Natasha Stirling will join us for 2017. Ms Donald has spent a long time with us as we were her final placement school in her final year of training as a mature age graduate and Ms Stirling has come from St Patrick’s in Pakenham with several years of experience as both a classroom teacher and a leader in ICT. I will publish the full list of staffing when I have finalised it later in the term. Gayanji began Parental Leave as of today and that is a week earlier than expected but we managed to get Mr John Desengano in to work alongside Gayanji for some time this week to ensure that there is a smooth handover and he will be here full time from Monday October 17 th to teach Ms Egan’s home group till the end of the term. Mr Desengano has taught here before in Term 1 and 2 and has just returned from a long trip overseas so he should be ready and refreshed to work with us for the rest of the term. I am sure that you will get to know him really well. He certainly impressed us in his time in our school. Dear Parents, Students and Other Parishioners,

Thank you to those of you who gave me comments about the possibility of a different structure to classes for next year.

Child Safe SchoolsAll schools have been working hard to ensure that their schools meet Child Safety Standards as directed by the Minister for Education in Victoria. I am proud to say that Catholic Schools have really done a great job in meeting guidelines supported by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. CECV is committed to ensuring the ongoing safety of children and young people and supporting Catholic school principals, staff and parents in providing a safe and nurturing school environment.  As part of this commitment, the CECV has launched an updated anti-bullying website Bullying. No Way! The website reflects the nine key elements of the National Safe Schools Framework, Bullying. No Way! And has a range of classroom resources, interactive storytelling, animations, latest research, fact sheets and information sections for teachers, parents and students.  The new website provides activities associated with the annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). Please get on and have a look at the contents and see if there are resources you can use at home.

Catholic Education Melbourne Parent HandbooksThese will no longer be available in hardcopy. Online handbooks are available on the CECV website www.cecv.catholic.edu.au under Publications / Parent Handbooks.

SPORTSWe are thrilled when some of our students get into the finals of events and wherever possible we support teams to play. However, when a child does so well that they move in higher levels of competition, we struggle to find the where-with-all to supervise one or two or even three or four children at a one off event. We just don’t have the ability to release a teacher for so few. Therefore we are very grateful when parents and grandparents take responsibility for getting these successful students to their event. This is where we hope the home / school partnership can support the children.

Hello!Dawn, the crossing lady who replaced Lorraine early this year says `Hello’ and she misses us!

ParkingI have had a conversation with one of our elderly neighbours who lives in Eastern Court. He was very distressed because he is worried sick about being able to get in and out of Eastern Court at school dismissal times. Can I remind you that we need to be aware of the difficulties for others when we park so that we don’t block entry and exit to a street? This man wears a monitor so he can call an ambulance in case of an emergency but he is so worried about the ambulance getting to him that the worry may well cause the problem. Please do not park illegally in Eastern Court.

Sincerely

Christine [email protected]

October is the month of the Holy Rosary

The Holy Rosary is not an old practice banished to the past. Instead, the Rosary is experiencing a new springtime. Without a doubt, this is one of the most clearly expressed signs of love that that we need when looking for Jesus and his Mother, Mary.

In our world, so varied, this prayer helps to put Christ at the centre. Christ is put at the centre of our life today through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. The Rosary brings peace and reconciliation. It contains the healing power of Jesus, calling on faith and love each time we pray the "Hail Mary".

Spend time with your family to pray:

SOCIAL JUSTICE IN ACTION IN OUR SCHOOL IN THIS YEAR OF MERCY

DONATIONS FOR MATUATINAO - SHOES

The boxes we have sent to Matutinau of resources, books and shoes are being gratefully received. We are just about ready to send our 7th box filled with more books from our school library. The books they had in their school when Dean and I went to visit were old and had no colour pictures at all and there were not enough of them.

Mr Andrew travelled to the Philippines in the school holidays and was able to pass along some sports equipment, buy a bag of much needed rice for some of the malnourished students and pass along some of the money St Elizabeth’s has been able to raise through fundraising.

The shoes we sent earlier in the year were needed and appreciated. Many children at Matutinao Elementary come to school with bare feet. When they have special formal days like graduations and are required to wear shoes they simply stay home. Our next collection will again be for the children in the school who don’t have shoes and white socks to wear to school. We will be collecting children’s shoes, runners, white socks, sandals and thongs that are in good condition to be sent to our friendship school. I have spoken to their principal who will distribute them to the families who need them most. Many children come to school with bare feet.

Please bring your pre-loved shoes and new socks to the basket near the school office.

God Bless,

CYBERSAFETY PARENTING TIPSHEETCourtesy of Telstra: https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consumer-advice/pdf/consumer/cyber-safety-cyberbullying.pdf

Most kids really are kind to each other online, but there is a minority using digital technology to harass and intimidate others. Bullying thrives on digital media because it can be done remotely and often

anonymously – giving bullies a reduced sense of the harm they’re causing. Cyberbullying can also be harder to avoid than traditional bullying, with no relief offered by the school bell. No single response will stop bullying but knowing how to support your child can assist.

1. TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT THEIR DIGITAL LIVESThe more you are aware of their online lives, the more likely they will be to talk to you, especially when something makes them feel uncomfortable. Make sure your children know they will be supported if they report something to you. Alternatively, make sure they have another trusted adult in their lives they can talk to.

2.   DO UNTO OTHERSEncourage children to treat others the same way they’d like to be treated online. Discuss what it means to be respectful to and respected by others online. Be zero-tolerant to mean or rude behaviour. Make clear that mean behaviour is not okay at any time – online or off.

3.   THINK BEFORE YOU CLICKEncourage children to think about content and the consequences of posting it or forwarding something that might upset someone else. This also applies to not making hurtful or derogatory comments on someone else’s material.

4. PROMOTE POSITIVE BYSTANDER BEHAVIOUREncourage children to support victims of bullying. Work together with your child ahead of time to come up with safe ways to stand up to online abuse if they see it happen.

IF YOUR CHILD IS THE VICTIM OF CYBERBULLYING:5.   TALK TO THEMIf they’ve been cyberbullied, encourage children to stay calm and positive. It’s important for victims of cyberbullying to know that they’re not responsible for what’s happened. A reaction is often just what a bully wants to see. Not responding or retaliating can sometimes stop the cycle.

6.   TAKE CONCRETE STEPSHelp your child block the troublemaker responsible by removing them from your children’s online contact lists; show them how they can keep evidence by taking screenshots and saving them, or printing the evidence; report abusive behaviour on the digital platforms your child visits;

Page 6: St Elizabeth's Parish School€¦  · Web viewMr Andrew travelled to the Philippines in the school holidays and was able to pass along some sports equipment, buy a bag of much needed

talk to your child’s school; get to know your legal rights by visiting lawstuff.org.au; and, of course, if the bullying extends to threats of violence, inform the police without delay.

7.   DO NOT RESPOND ON YOUR CHILD’S BEHALFResponding on your child’s behalf, like emailing the bully directly, or calling their parents, may further inflame the situation

Don’t forget on Wednesday October 26 at 7pm there will be an information session for parents in years 2 -6.  Students from years 3-6 will present some of their learning about Cybersafety from their Media/Digital Technologies specialist classes this term and there will be information about our 1:1 eLearning Tool program for families with

students currently in year 2.  Further information to follow.

Through these discussions they are encouraged to capture and write about their lives, from one moment to the next, to create a digital story.

During Term 4 the Years 5 and 6 students will be using their creativity and media knowledge, from previous units studied in Performing Arts, to create their own story using iMovie and the Trailer feature.  They will be encouraged to explore what they are passionate about as they Transition from Year 5 to Year 6 and Year 6 to High School.  They will continue to learn about and create a personal blog (web log) to share their learning.  They will be encouraged to use recognised conventions when commenting on their own and others’ blog posts.  The children will put into practice their knowledge of Digital Citizenship and share their journey with the greater school community.

Part 1 focuses on developing Number Word and Numeral Sequences from 1 to beyond 1000, forwards and backwards, and the reading and writing of numerals from 2-digits to 5-digits. Part 2 focuses on how numbers are structured and in turn provides the student with strategies to initially solve addition and subtraction problems. Part 3 focuses on Place Value.

Mathematic Design Creativity TechnologyDuring Term 4 in MDCT, we will focus on Christmas. They will design Christmas cards that use quilling as a technique to produce and decorate their work.

I will also continue to focus on their fine motor skills and reinforce all the skills and processes of design that have been taught throughout the year. This will include

holding equipment correctly- scissors, pencils, glue sticks

selecting materials appropriately- paper, texture boards, fine liners

using colour purposefully- choosing a colour that stands out or recedes depending on the purpose of the activity

Nazareth College ~ Enrolment timeline changes

Dear Parents and Guardians of Students currently in Year 4 and Year 5,

There has been a significant change to the long established enrolment timeline for Victorian Catholic Secondary Schools, including Nazareth College.

All enrolment applications for Year 7 2019 and beyond will close on the last Friday in August while students are still in Year 5 (previously Catholic secondary enrolments closed at the end of February while students were in Year 6).

What does this mean for you as Parents/Guardians?

Page 12: St Elizabeth's Parish School€¦  · Web viewMr Andrew travelled to the Philippines in the school holidays and was able to pass along some sports equipment, buy a bag of much needed

If you are considering enrolling your child for Year 7 2019 at Nazareth College (or subsequent years e.g. Year 7 2020), applications will need to be submitted during the month of August while your child is in Year 5 (this is six months earlier than currently is the case).

Letters of offer will be mailed to families in early October 2017 for Year 7 2019.

Enrolment applications submitted after the closing date of late August will most likely have to be placed on a waiting list.

What about Year 7 2018?

There will be no change to the enrolment timelines for   Year 7 2018 . Applications will close on 17 February 2017 and offers will be mailed in late April 2017.

What should I do now?

If you have children in either Year 4 or Year 5 now is the time you should be planning the selection of the Catholic Secondary School for your child. We strongly encourage you to attend College Tours, Open Days etc. to learn more about Nazareth College.

How will Nazareth College assist families with this change in the enrolment process?

As well as providing continued information regarding this important change, a Nazareth College enrolment pack will be sent to all Year 4 and Year 5 students in our priority parish Catholic Primary Schools in 2017, as both information and a reminder of this change in procedures. Of course all families (Catholic and non-Catholic) are welcome to obtain an enrolment pack from Nazareth College at any time and to lodge the enrolment application.

Enrolment Guidelines

Full details of the Nazareth College enrolment guidelines are available on the College website in the ‘Enrolments’ section. Please visit our website at www.nazareth.vic.edu.au

If you have any questions regarding this change, would like a tour of Nazareth College or have any other questions about enrolling at Nazareth, please contact the College Registrar, Ms Bernadette Bryant at [email protected] or call 9795 8100.

We are proud of our school and look forward to discussing the potential enrolment of your child/children at Nazareth.

Yours faithfully

Mrs Anne McDonald
