FiFth SUNDAY OF EASTER
First Reading: Acts 9:26-31 Paul the Apostle came to Jerusalem, where the other disciples were afraid of him. Then they learned that the Lord had spoken to Paul and he had preached openly in Damascus. When they learned that someone wanted to kill him, they protected him because they fully believed he had converted.
Second Reading: I John 3:18-24 John clearly states that we must love one another. All people who believe in Jesus Christ can show their faith only through their actions. If people believe in Jesus and love one another as he commanded us, they prove that they are true believers in Christ.
Gospel: John 15:1-8 Jesus compares himself to a vine, and compares his father to the vine-grower. He explains how God prunes the barren branches so that the rest might yield more fruit. He reminds them that apart from himself, his followers could not bear fruit.

Sharing god’S BleSSing annual appeal Our Goal this year is $38,631.00
Currently we are at 43.6% $16,606.00
I hope that this Easter Season has filled you with much Joy. Easter and Lent is a reminder that some of us will
have to carry a cross from one time to another. But after it is over there is much to celebrate. When we give to the
appeal such crosses are lifted through Catholic Charities This year’s Appeal will continue to support the many good works of the ministries throughout the Archdiocese. Our Holy Father Pope Francis shared: “What counts above all else is “faith working through love” (Gal 5:6). Works of love directed to one’s neighbor are the most perfect external manifestation of the interior grace of the Spirit.” We are called to similarly share what is granted to us by God and direct our love to our neighbors so that not one of our brothers and sisters goes without; without the gift of faith, without the essential human needs, and without a personal relationship with Our Lord.
The Annual Appeal provides the poor with food, shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual guidance and CYO programs available for the young; insures the future leadership of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most important, brings Christ’s Good News to the people of the Archdiocese. Our parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal.

Have you noticed something new?
As you may have noticed, we
recently installed on our property a
donation bin for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark.
All of the clothing, shoes, and small household items that you generously donate will be sold and the proceeds will be used to support the many programs for the needy as provided by
Catholic Charities. Tax receipts are available,
either paper or to your smartphone.
With the change in weather, this is an ideal time to clean out that closet.
Catholic Charities will report periodically to us on the amount
of money generated from our donation bin.
If you have any questions please call Maria Biancheri of Catholic Charities at 973-596-3985. If you would like to
schedule a larger pick up, please call toll free @ 877-343-3651.
The Pro Life Committee at St. Elizabeth Church
Will be conducting a baby drive the weekend of May 9th and 10th at all the masses. The proceeds of this drive will go to

homeless and have no place to go. There are about 12 mothers and their children at any given time in residence. The staff helps the mothers and their children to get back on their feet and help
them find jobs in the community. The following is a list of items that are needed by the mothers
and their children: Baby items:: Diapers (Sz. 2-3-4), wipes, shampoo, body wash, lotion, Q-tips, healing ointment, baby powder, blankets, clothing

PASTOR’S COLUMN “...Not to be served by others, but to serve, to give his own life as a ransom for
the many.” (Matthew 20:28)
THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES AS ONE
The First Reading introduces Saul, whose recent conversion on the road to Damascus has left him between the proverbial rock and hard place. Known as a persecutor of Christians, he now desires to be a disciple. It is only through the intercession of Barnabas that Saul is afforded a hearing among the apostles in Jerusalem. A Levite of Cypriot birth formerly known as Joseph, the apostles gave the name ‘Barnabas’ (or “son of encouragement”). In today’s reading, he aptly lives up to his name. Both he and Saul will become a missionary team, evangelizing Cyprus and Asia Minor.
Today’s Second Reading from the First Letter of John demonstrates how the later Johannine community built upon the theology of the evangelist. The only expressly named commandment given in the Gospel of John is found in John 13:34 and 15:12 – “Love one another”. To this, the author of the First Letter of John adds belief “in the name of Jesus Christ”. The love that the community is to offer to one another is Christological – based on the saving event of Jesus Christ. This faith in Christ leads to love of the other.
In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus uses the imagery of a vine and branches to describe the relationship He shares with His disciples. God is the vine grower who prunes the branches that do not bear fruit, but the disciples, having heard the Word, are already pruned. They need only “remain” in Jesus to assure an abundance of fruit. The Johannine community understood that “remaining in Jesus” characterized an intimate, enduring, reciprocal relationship between Jesus and the Spirit, Jesus and the disciple, and Jesus and the Father. Cut off from Jesus, our lives will be fruitless.
More so, the importance of connection can also be seen in the First Reading today in which we hear Paul (here called Saul) seeking out the disciples of Jesus in Jerusalem. He knew that if his labor was to bear fruit, he must be connected with other followers of Christ as well. Connection with other believers is just as important as our personal connection to Jesus.
We often hear people describe themselves as “spiritual but not religious”. This may mean that they have a profound sense of God, or at least some mysterious reality greater than themselves, but they see no need to identify with any particular community or tradition. This was not the view of St. Paul, nor is it ours. We are connected to Christ as the branch is connected to the vine; but there are other branches on the vine and our spiritual fruitfulness is a gift that we are to share with them.
May we keep close to Jesus and our fellow believers in sincere and true love, the fruitfulness that comes from a true connectedness to God and our neighbor.
God be with us always!
