Parish Mission Statement The Catholic community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, united in the love of God, comes together to worship the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to provide for the spiritual growth of each member, to minister to one another’s needs, to be servants and neighbors to all, to strengthen and share faith, to experience the richness of Jesus Christ. The Catholic community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, aware of its call to be the good news, accomplishes its mission through worship, education, service and personal example.

May God Bless and keep safe in his care our Service Men and Women whose lives are in danger every day. They heroically serve to defend and maintain freedom around the world as well as at home. Our prayer for them reflects our great admiration and love for them. May God bless them, watch over them, and protect them always.

Prayer for Vocations “Lord of the harvest, BLESS young people with the gift of courage to respond to your call. Open their hearts to great ideals, to great things. INSPIRE all of your disciples to mutual love and giving – for vocations blossom in the good soil of faithful people, INSTILL those in religious life, parish ministries, and families with the confidence and grace to invite others to embrace the bold and noble path of a life consecrated to you. UNITE us to Jesus through prayer and sacrament, so that we may cooperate with you in building your reign of mercy and truth, of justice and peace. Amen.” (Pope Francis)

Anna Asks… Why do we stand for some prayers during Mass? The Liturgical Documents give us some good reasons. Those who are gathered offer the holy sacrifice of the Mass in different ways. The priest offers it on behalf of the people in a special manner, in persona Christi (in the person of Christ), by virtue of his ordination. But those gathered in Church are not idle spectators. The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy no. 48 says that the faithful should be “conscious” participants “by offering the Immaculate Victim, not only through the hands of the priest, but also with him, they should learn also to offer themselves.” Remember, at your baptism, you were anointed with the Oil of Chrism as “priest, prophet, and king.” To address God and offer prayer is a priestly role and the liturgical posture is to stand. Take for example, the prayer at the end of the Offertory. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) instructs the assembly to stand at the beginning of the priest’s invitation, “Pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.” The people respond, “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church.” It is appropriate to stand here, for every dialogue between presider and faithful in the liturgy, being one of mutuality and reciprocity, occurs while both stand (GIRM 146). Starting this weekend, as a “liturgical-new-year’s resolution,” the people will stand for this prayer.

March for Life: Teens! Join us for this annual youth trip down to Washington D.C. for the March for Life, January 23-25, 2020. This 3 day trip is filled with fun activities like visiting the national monuments, exploring the Smithsonian museums, attending the Life is Very Good Rally, Mass with our Bishop in the National Basilica, and even a visit to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine! This trip is $160 but through fundraising could be lower! If interested in going please contact Nick at [email protected] or if you are interested in making a donation.

Youth Singers/Musicians Wanted!! – Rehearsals for young musicians who will be performing at the 4:00PM Christmas Eve Mass have started. Students from grades K-12 are invited to bring their singing voices or instrument to our weekly Saturday rehearsals in church (3:30-4:15pm). Advent Activities Please check out the insert for Advent. We have a lot of activities planned at the parish during our Advent journey. We will have guest presenters several times, including Chris Padgett and Brendan Foley. There are extended opportunities for Reconciliation. We are launching the ENGAGE program to send inspiration to your inbox. See that blurb for more info on signing up. The little blue books are available for daily inspiration. Of course, daily mass is a great way to prepare for Christmas as well. Join us at 6:45 or 9:00am on weekdays.

Altar Server Training – Calling all boys and girls interested in becoming an Altar Server at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. The only qualification needed is that you must have at least entered 3rd grade. This is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of our parish to serve the Lord and the parishioners of SEAS in a very special way. It is also a great way for your child to feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment each time they serve. Training will take place in the church on Saturday, December 7th at 9:00AM and will last about an hour. We encourage all parents to please discuss this with your child or children and to discover if this opportunity is something they would enjoy. To assist their child in serving at Mass or to ask any questions parents/guardians are also encouraged to stay and attend this meeting. For your convenience, there are parent/guardian permission slips located near the statue of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, on the table in the area dedicated to parish Youth News that you can fill out and drop into the offertory box after you leave Mass today.

December 7th is Full of FUN - A Christmas workshop for kids will be held from 1-5pm – crafts, games, and fun activities. Go to our website to register.

Parish Spaghetti Dinner- Saturday, December 7th- Spaghetti dinner with Santa 4-7:30PM! Presale tickets can be purchased after masses this weekend. Presale tickets: adults- $7, kids-$3 (under age 4 are free).

Ministry Schedules are now on the website The schedules for Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers, Hospitality, Sandwich Making and Delivery are now online. They can be found on the ministry page found under the Community tab on the parish website: www.stelizabethbville.org.

Thank You for Thanksgiving Collection and Distribution: Last weekend our Parish assisted with the distribution of 142 Thanksgiving dinner to the families of the Seton Food Pantry. Enough thanks cannot be expressed for your generosity whether it was with the purchasing of food, money for turkeys, assembling the packages, or being a deliverer to someone’s car. Your dedication to this community was evident. Donation for turkeys totaled $2,359 which assisted in purchasing 160 turkeys.

The Pennellville Methodist Church is presenting the Cantata- “Night of the Father’s Love” on Saturday, Dec 7th at 7:00pm and Sunday, Dec 8 at 3:30pm. The choir is comprised of members from area churches, including six from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Terry Sivers will be the director. Come join us to usher in the Season of Advent.

SEAS Engage! With gratitude again to our parish’s generosity toward the Hope Appeal, we are happy to announce the launch of a new evangelization program: Word on Fire ENGAGE! This new digital program will supplement our parish’s ongoing efforts to continue forming disciples of Jesus Christ in our modern world. Along with the wisdom and relevant teaching of Bishop Robert Barron of Los Angeles, we now have free access to all of the ENGAGE resources that have been tremendously successful in nurturing a new appreciation for the depth and beauty of our Catholic faith. Often our lives can be so busy that we leave little time to study and grow more in our journey of faith. With SEAS Engage, podcasts, videos, and more will be available to you on the go at no cost for your own growth and to share with whoever comes to mind. Reignite your faith this Advent season and consider your own personal efforts to spread the Gospel to your loved ones, friends, and coworkers. Sign up on the ENGAGE tab on the parish website or text: SEAS to: 84576.

The Word of God & Mother Seton . Both Jesus and St. Paul have a similar message for us today: stay awake, stay alert, put on the armor of lightavoid works of darkness. This is almost to say that Advent is not a cozy, easygoing warm up to Christmas, but rather a time for a serious look at our readiness to meet the Lord. Advent is a season of waiting; the various liturgical signs and practices refocus us on the reminder that we are constantly waiting to encounter Jesus. And what are we to do while we are waiting? Prepare! Our preparation looks like our readings today, encouraging us to be awake and ready. By doing so, we become aware that God is ever inviting us to a new and deeper relationship with him. Let’s take Mother Seton’s advice for our response to that call this Advent: “Think often of God, in great simplicity and love, listen to God in prayer, open the ears of [your] hearts to receive His holy Wordtasting it and relishing its delights.”

Vocation Reflection: “Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths.” Isaiah’s vision demand expert guides to lead the nations. If you have the courage to consider guiding others to the Lord, please visit the Vocation Promotion website: www.vocations-syracuse.org.

A Prayer Chain is in place at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Serving on the Prayer Chain is a way for good people to serve God and to bring blessings to others who will be grateful for the prayers of Prayer Chain Members. If prayers for self or for others are needed and desired, please call the Parish Office at 652-4300 and your prayer requests will be forwarded to Angie Peterson.
