We strive to ensure that our students are intellectually

competent, morally upright, and sensitive to the needs of

fellow human beings. As a college in a rural area, catering to

economically and socially disadvantaged students, it is our

prime duty to equip our students for a better future by

shaping their personality, strengthening their character,

instilling in them a sense of responsibility, and developing

their potentials to the full.

A centre of learning that mouldsrefined individuals,

quality leadersand

a society of committed human beings

ST DOMINIC'S COLLEGE

1. St Dominic's College was started in 1965 under the Catholicmanagement of St Dominic’s Forane Church, Kanjirapally, tocater to the higher educational needs of the parish, in particular, and of the eastern parts of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry,in general. This was the fulfilment of a long-felt need of this regionwhich was one of the educationally backward areas in Kerala. When the new Diocese of Kanjirapally was formed in 1977, StDominic's College assumed the unique distinction of being theonly institution offering higher education in the whole diocese.

2. The College also includes in its purview the academic aspirationsof the non-Catholic communities of the area and is committed toimparting education to all who seek higher learning at thesedoors, irrespective of caste , community and creed. In fact, thiscentre of learning keeps in its interests, the intellectual ,culturaland moral advancement of the whole area.

3. True to the adage "Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom,''the College tries to instil in the hearts of its students trust in Godand faith in ethical and spiritual values . It aims at upholdingthe highest Christian ideals along with academic excellence.

4. The College aims at making its students live its motto-'Absorband Radiate' - absorb the light of knowledge and values, andtransmit what they imbibe, thereby expanding the frontiers oftruth and wisdom.

St. Dominic de Guzman, the Patron Saint of this College, is amodel for teachers and students to emulate, for his was a lifededicated to prayer, study and service. Born in an aristocratic familyat Caleruega, Spain, around 1170-72, Dominic was brought up in apious atmosphere.

As a young man at the University of Palencia he lived a lifeof intense prayer and study and had a great love for the poor.Even as he sought to alleviate their pain and hunger, he recognizeda deeper hunger in men and women - the hunger for God andTruth - which he wanted to satisfy. So he became a priest and thena Canon Regular in the Cathedral Chapter of Osma.

It was a very turbulent period in church history, the Albigensianheresy being widespread in Southern France. The existingecclesiastical structures were inadequate to contend with it. Dominic, therefore, took it as a challenge and decided to dedicate his life tothe ministry of preaching. He organized his fellow preachers in thenew religious order at Toulouse in 1215 and it was formally approvedby Pope Honorius III on December 22, 1216. His own love of prayerand study, his zeal for the salvation of souls, and his belief inapostolic poverty became the foundation stones of his Order whichwas dispersed throughout Europe in 1217.

The saying about St. Dominic that ‘he either spoke with Godor about God’ exemplifies the holiness of his life. He died at Bolognaon August 6, 1221.

Our times are not all that different in their uncertainty andchaos from Dominic’s time. We recognise in our day a similar kindof hunger for spirituality and meaning especially among the youth. The restless youth of today can draw inspiration from the exampleof St. Dominic who sent his friars out two by two to the centres ofthought - the universities which were being founded throughoutEurope - so that they could both find truth among the prevalentcurrents of thought and transform themselves as the bearers oftruth.

August 8 is observed as St. Dominic's Day.
