The youth mission trip to El Salvador was an amazing experience for all who took part. Adult chaperones John Milgram and Tim Van de Walle as well as our youth minister, Erin Conway, join with me in thanking all who so generously donated supplies for our trip.
The teens from our parish made us all very proud with their willingness to serve and their joy in living the gospel! All of them jumped right in from the very beginning, interacting with Salvadorans of all ages and sharing the joy of our community. They were truly “living the mission of Christ” and brought so much joy to our hosts. A special thanks to their parents who supported them on this mission, as “children learn what they live.” There will be a medical trip in the fall of 2018 as well as another relational trip for parishioners of all ages. Please contact Jodie Bowers at the rectory if you would like more information.
Each year the diocese assigns a missionary to our parish to come for the weekend and share with us the work of the missions across the world. We welcome Fr. Ramon this weekend from the Redemptorist Fathers who will speak at all of the masses. There will be a second collection after communion for the work of international missions. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

As a culminating activity for our 8th grade students, enrichment teacher Julie Pastore had the students create and perform a TEDx Talk for their peers in5th - 7th grade. Based on the premise of TED Talks - ideas worth spreading - students chose a topic of interest to be shared in a three-to-five minute talk. Students watched examples of TED Talks and studied effective speaking skills. They wrote out their talks and then practiced in small groups and in front of teachers.
Some of the ideas worth spreading included: stepping out of comfort zones, handling anxiety, reaching for more, treasuring memories, embracing change, and setting goals. According to Julie Pastore, “This project teaches invaluable skills that will be used in high school, college, and in the workplace. Students had to go beyond surface level thinking to discover how their experiences can have meaning for others.”
One of the longest standing traditions at St. Dominic School is the St. Dominic Award, gifted to the school by parishioners Albert and Nancy Kirchner in honor of their children, Eileen and John. The award is intended to honor a student in each grade level who exemplifies the Christian example of Saint Dominic himself.
Students in each class are prepared in the context of prayer and choose a classmate who is kind, generous, and caring. The award is given during the final assembly of the year, and the previous year’s recipients for each class are also recognized. The St. Dominic Award winner from this year’s first grade, Dominic Longmeier, said, “I felt super happy. I was surprised. It felt really good.”
Congratulations to all this year’s St. Dominic Award winners!

In 2004, the Holy Spirit inspired Fr. Tom and a group of parishioners to travel to El Salvador. After arriving in a poor, mountainous area called Chiltiupan, the group discovered the Santo Domingo Church in the middle of the village. Clearly this was an invitation from God to become sister parishes.
Fourteen years later, almost a thousand parishioners have traveled to El Salvador. Last week, Fr. Tom led the St. Dominic Youth Group to El Salvador. Multiple ministries and initiatives are flourishing – all with the goal of helping our sisters and brothers to have a more dignified life. We intentionally do not proselytize while we are at Santo Domingo, rather, we are there to plant seeds, water seeds already planted, and to harvest the fruit of this transformative relationship. We are grateful for all of the blessings we have received.
This week we celebrate Father Tom’s birthday and his 30th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. With our sisters and brothers from Santo Domingo, we say, “Gracias Padre Tomas,” for your vision, leadership, and willingness to share your gifts with people of Cleveland and El Salvador!
Fr. Tom will be leading the November 14th-18th, relational trip to El Salvador. To register, please contact Jodie Bowers ([email protected] or 216-991-1444).Registration deadline is July 1st.
GRACIAS, PADRE TOMAS
