THE HOLY PEOPLE OF GOD

www.stdavidchurch.org

The Next Reformation Throughout Holy Scripture God calls His people, Chosen and Adopted, to a life of radical differentiation. The People of God are always called out of the world, called to be separate and apart from the world – even if only for a time of preparation - so that they can go back into the world and help transform it into the image of Christ. In my study of the Christian Church, its current position in the culture, its trends and its future, I have come to believe that we are on the leading edge of the next reformation. There will be two kinds of Christian Churches in the future – those that are deeply and fundamentally counter-cultural and those that are closed. I believe we are in the last stages of the pendulum swing of “churches” going out of their way to make sure the experience is nothing like church. The Church of the future will be a Church, perhaps smaller, but that is:

• deeply rooted in a life of sacred worship, • steeped in prayer, • upheld by small group worship and ministry, the

embrace of the richly spiritual and mystical, personal sacrifice and discipline,

• profoundly committed to caring for its church community, and

• committed to ministry in the world with a clear and articulated sense that all we do in the world is grounded in the Person, call and saving work of Jesus Christ.

I do not believe that is the Christian Church today. The Christian and the Christian Church of the future will be much more like the 5th century and much less like the 20th. Such a Church will be uncomfortable for many and

they will likely seek an expression they hold to be “spiritual but not religious”. Others will be drawn to the genuine nature of the re-emerging Church and the rediscovered Savior Jesus. Nominal engagement with the Gospel will no longer pass for Christianity. The current blend of “Christianity lite” and secular humanism trivializes the cross and the empty tomb, and no spiritual leader of the Church should tolerate it, let alone participate in it. We must, rather, reform it. In the weeks and months ahead I will be in deep prayer, study and conversation with staff and parish leaders and spiritual leaders of other faith communities to plan for the transformation of St. David’s into a fundamentally, deeply, counter-cultural Church. First signs of this reformation will begin to emerge with the Fall Adult Christian Education Program and our programming for Wednesdays. We are, I believe, called to be transformed into the Church Jesus died and rose again to birth and redeem – and nothing less. Wishing you each and all a blessed and joyous Eastertide - in the Name of Jesus - risen, alive and in love with you. Faithfully,

The Men's Club will be serving a "Green" breakfast on Sunday, April 22nd (Earth Day and St. David's "Green Sunday").

It will be special and earth-friendly!

Kanuga Testamonial “My family loves the experiences we have on the weekend at Kanuga. The parents and the kids have an opportunity to make new friends and meet new people. Last year, My husband was not able to go, but I know the rest of us could not miss it. We went and had a blast. The kids love the outdoor experience (swimming, canoeing, throwing rocks, bonfires, etc.) and being able to walk from cabin to cabin and see their friends. If you have not been before, consider clearing your calendar the first weekend in June. You will be glad you did.” ...from parishioner Amy Ostrowski It’s time to register for the Annual Parish Retreat! You can download the form from the church web site at www.stdavidchurch.org.

OUTREACH

www.stdavidchurch.org

The Climate Project a LIVE presentation of the slide show that’s

changing America’s mind! Saturday, April 21, at 3 p.m., in the Parish Hall

One of our very own parishioners, Bryan Jacob, has been recruited and trained to deliver the slide show that became the basis for the Oscar winning film "An Inconvenient Truth." The live version of the presentation offers an opportunity to explore the climate change subject in more detail and entertain questions from the audience. We will also focus more attention on solutions than the film did. Please plan to join us on Saturday, Apr. 21 (the eve of Earth Day) at 3 p.m.

Summer at NFCC! Calling all Parishioners

without Parental Conflicts! St. David’s Outreach for NFCC (North Fulton Community Charities) is in its second successful year of “From Drop Off to Pick Up,” a volunteer program for NFCC’s Food Pantry and Thrift Shop. This program offers church members with children a unique opportunity to participate in Outreach conveniently when their children attend St. David’s Preschool; thus the title of the program. This year’s second run has been very successful (one semester, St. David’s volunteers were at NFCC 50% of the days it was open!). However, summer approaches, and preschool children will soon be home, leaving current volunteers with scheduling conflicts. To make sure we sustain St. David’s volunteer presence at the center, Outreach offers for the 2nd year a program for parishioners without parental conflicts!

Calling all Seniors, Singles, Married without Children, College Students, Teens over age 15! We’re looking for a volunteer commitment of one Friday a month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. With 12 volunteers, we can provide NFCC with ongoing collective support throughout the summer! St. David’s provides volunteers for Fridays in particular (the center’s most needed day). If you can commit just one Friday a month for the summer months, to volunteer a morning shift (9 a.m to 1 p.m.), at NFCC, please contact Daryl O’Hare at 770-569-0836 or [email protected].
