Since 1969, the parishes of the Archdiocese have
participated in an annual October count. I want to
pass along the numbers that were collected this past
weekend so each of us can understand the necessity
to evangelize. Each and every baptized person is
called to evangelize or to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
We not only evangelize by word, but also by deed. Our local
statistics echo the national studies showing a decline in Mass
attendance. There are many reasons given as to why people do
not attend Sunday Mass. Among them are a lack of
understanding the Mass and its role in the life of the Catholic,
lack of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, other
obligations are deemed more important, a dislike of organized
religion, or just plain laziness. This past weekend 490 people
attended Saint Gabriel Church over three Masses. In 2007, the
weekend count was 867! This past weekend 442 people attended
Saint Joseph Church over three Masses. In 2007, the weekend
count was 773! Even though our numbers are much smaller than
they should be, those reading this are dedicated members for
which I am very grateful. Please consider ways to help our
numbers grow. Not one of us can do it all alone, but together we
can build up our parish to be a model for all. Jesus is calling and
yet all too many people are not listening or answering. Let us
pray for one another. Let us pray for an increase in the faith that
assists us along the pilgrim path of life.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. John P. Melnick

Monthly Food Collection Bags will be available next weekend for the monthly food drive. The Food Bank has requested hot chocolate, coffee and tea, hot breakfast cereal, cookies and crackers, and spaghetti sauce.
Thank you for supporting the Bake Sale! Thank you to all the bakers, volunteers that worked the tables, and especially to everyone that stopped by to support the sale. Through your generosity, we raised $825 to benefit the Windsor Fuel Bank.
Craft Fair – Mark your calendars! Several ministries from St. Damien Parish are participating in a Craft Fair on Saturday, November 4, from 9AM – 2PM. The Craft Fair will be held at the LP Wilson Community Center, with parking also available at St. Gertrude’s church across the street (includes shuttle service). Please consider stopping by for some great craft items to support our ministries. The cost of admission is $1 or a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to the Windsor Food Bank. There will also be a basket raffle to benefit “Send Hometown Windsor to our Troops.” It will be a great place to begin your holiday shopping! For those not able to attend the Craft Fair, some items will be for sale after each Mass the weekend of November 4 and 5 at St. Joseph, and after the 10:30AM Mass at St. Gabriel on November 5.
Coffee Hour Helpers
Saint Joseph is in need of volunteers to support the monthly coffee hours, especially after the 8AM mass. If you are able to help, please contact Lisa Andersen. The duties include plugging in the coffee pot before Mass, plating the donuts, and setting out
the juice. Families are welcome to host a coffee hour. Typically volunteers would only have to host once or twice per year.
The next Social Action meeting is November 13th, at 6PM in Father Doherty Hall at St. Joseph Church. For more information on how you can participate in Social Action contact Lisa Andersen at 860-688-3474 or [email protected] or Sue Claughsey at 860-298-0550 or [email protected].
