Exodus 19:2-8a

The Israelites had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness ofSinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of themountain. Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from themountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell theIsraelites: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you oneagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey myvoice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of allthe peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me apriestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speakto the Israelites.”

So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before themall these words that the Lord had commanded him. The people all answeredas one: “Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

Romans 5:1-8

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through ourLord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace inwhich we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. Andnot only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that sufferingproduces endurance, and endurance produces character, and characterproduces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has beenpoured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Forwhile we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person-- though perhaps for agood person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love forus in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

The Reading from the Holy Gospel (Standing) Matthew 9:35–10:23Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease andevery sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Thenhe said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority overunclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and everysickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, alsoknown as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and hisbrother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the taxcollector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, andJudas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Gonowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but gorather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the goodnews, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; givewithout payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag foryour journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve theirfood. Continued on following page

7

Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and staythere until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return toyou. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off thedust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will bemore tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgmentthan for that town.

“See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so bewise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will handyou over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will bedragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to themand the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you areto speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to youat that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Fatherspeaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father hischild, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; andyou will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to theend will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; fortruly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel beforethe Son of Man comes.”

Gospel Acclamation #172 ELW Halle, Halle, Hallelujah!(Sung twice before and once after the Gospel)

The Gospel Reading Matthew 29:35–10:8

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in theirsynagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing everydisease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion onthem, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without ashepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but theworkers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workersinto his harvest field.” Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to driveout impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is calledPeter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brotherJohn; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not goamong the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lostsheep of Israel. As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom ofheaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who haveleprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

Reader: This is the Gospel of our Lord. We are to serve as Christ served.People: Lord teach us to serve.

Canticle 10 Second Song of Isaiah BCP 86-7

Isaiah 55:6-11

Lay Leader: Let us offer the Canticle in unison. All: Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *

call upon him when he draws near.Let the wicked forsake their ways * and the evil ones their thoughts; And let them turn to the Lord, and he will havecompassion, * and to our God, for he will richly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, * nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, * so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as rain and snow fall from the heavens * and return not again, but water the earth,

Bringing forth life and giving growth, * seed for sowing and bread for eating,So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; * it will not return to me empty;

But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, * and prosper in that for which I sent it.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.Amen

The First Reading

“Many of the 8 million religiously raised LGBT people who are open tomake a return [to a faith community of their youth] fall into the self-reportedcategory of not knowing what would influence them to make a return. (theyare, however, open to figuring it out.) A significant percentage offered arange of possibilities for their return. Given the three main reasons forleaving in the first place – negative personal experiences, theologicaldifferences, and institutional misgivings – what does the datashow will actually bring LGBTs back to their religious community and itspractices? In comparison to the extreme cultural perceptions of what continues tokeep the LGBT and faith communities apart, our findings are quite subtle. With the exception of the 8 percent of participants wanting to see a change intheir faith community’s theology, most are not asking for dramatic ecclesialoverhauls. Based on these responses, the LGBT community is asking thatfaith communities be what they say they are:

Loving (#1)Patient (#2)Realistic (#4)Authentic (#5)Supportive (#6)

Whether these findings are shocking or unsurprising, it’s important toacknowledge them. Jesus reminds his followers that what is kept hidden willeventually be found out (Luke 8: 16-18). And what we found out through our research is that LGBT people want the spiritual home the church claims to be. God is love, the Bible tell us (1 John 4:8). When we offer ourselves toGod, we are offering ourselves to love. Pragmatically, that involves twodistinct things: investing time and proximity with those God sends us to(often enough, that involves those who have hurt us or those we have hurt);and being vulnerable in those relationships over a significant period of time. Only through sustained, relationally sensitive works of love can people’s hurtbe healed, culture wars ended, and redemptive conversations begun. Ever thought of going to a local gay-straight alliance? Or if you are in abig city, repeatedly attending programming at an LGBT community center?Love doesn’t hide like bunkers or engage in drive-by evangelism. Loveenters into the tension of difference and lives there, commits itself, presentsitself, makes itself vulnerable, and offers good news.”

intercessions) that they may receive comfort, companionship, and care fromthose around them. Silence

We pray that those who have been persecuted or seriously wronged by othersmay experience warmth and love with Christ, and be able to forgive thosewho have hurt them. Silence

We pray for all Christians: that they may seek the kingdom of God before allelse. Silence

We pray that we may be a sign of the love of God to all whom we meettoday. We pray for all those who celebrate joy in life (parish intercessions)

Silence

We pray for the souls of all those whom we have loved but now no longer see;those who have gone beyond the veil of this mortal life (parish intercessions).

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
