A 4-H SUMMER
By Annette Bjorklund It’s summertime and you know what that means Youngsters in shorts and farmers in jeans. The kids are out of school and the days are long The wildlife is active and the birds are in song. Is it really summer? A 4-H member’s joy! 4-H camp, rodeo, and the fair. Oh, boy! Working on projects, having fun, Learning new skills. There are a ton! We will play outside and work together So much that we do depends on the weather. The vegetables, the flowers, the corn crop, too. Will they grow big enough to earn a “blue?” Records books will follow the fair, of course Reflect on your projects like knitting and horse. Oh, what you’ve learned during this 4-H year So much, so much, we want to hear! September will come and the summer will be over Then we’ll start a new year with the 4-H Clover!

Photography Meeting
The St Croix County Fair will be here before we
know it! I hope that you all have your entries picked
out and that you are taking lots and lots of pictures so
you have lots to choose from.
We had a total of 7 meetings this year and for the
most part they all went well! We had two guest
speakers from the Western Wisconsin Adult
Photography Club come and share their knowledge
with us and I am working on some topics for next
year already with Carl Wegener (who was awesome)!
We had our very own Avery Lingenfelter and Carole
Schurtz hold meetings also and I am hoping that they
will also return next year and help us out! I would
like it if some clubs could “sponsor” a meeting and
even someone who just has a love for photography. I
can help to find a speaker if needed. There will be
more on this in the newsletter after the fair.
The topics of the meetings were:
1 & 2) The Basics of photography for the 1st and 2nd
year members
3) FStop and Depth of Field
4) Composition
5) Why Photography and How to Have Fun with It
6) Action/Sports Photography and
7) Matting Your Photo
If you need me for anything I can be reached at the
email address below or through Facebook Messenger.
Have fun taking pictures (take lots of pictures) and I
look forward to seeing everyone at the fair!!!

belly pigs)
Farm raised deer (elk, moose, caribou, reindeer,

Flower Barrels for the Fairgrounds
Each year, the flower barrels help make the
fairgrounds look beautiful!
It appears that the clubs that displayed the flower
barrels at the fair last year, kept the barrels. I hope
your club will fill them up with flowers again this
year and bring them to the fairgrounds before the fair.
If your club has one of the barrels and is not going to
use it, please return it to the UWEX office.
Potential State Fair Projects
It’s our goal to show off your 4-H
exhibits to more than just the folks
who visit the county fair. Again this
year at the fair, if your non animal
exhibit gets one of these stickers on
your entry tags after judging, your item is being
considered to be to be entered at the Wisconsin State
fair. Keep in mind that we have to follow the
guidelines set forth by the state fair and that we will
count on parents or leaders to get the items to and
from the fair. If you are selected, we will have a
meeting on Sunday at 1:00pm along the East side of
the 4-H building. Our goal at this meeting is to cover
some of the logistics for the exhibits. Looking
forward to seeing you all at the fair.

Cat Show Saturday, July 15
Setup: 1:00 pm Judging: 3:00 pm
Fairgrounds; Glenwood City
The Cat Show is held a week prior to the junior fair
and will be on the same day as the Foods Fair. The
show will take place in the arena.
Lil’ Kids Goat Show July 20, 2017
This show will be open to 4-Hers and non 4-Hers. It
will take place prior to the goat show on Thursday.
All animal rules will apply for any goats coming in
for the show. However, if a youth wants to show an
animal for that event only, it does not have to stay at
the fair the entire weekend. If you would like to
borrow a goat, please let Lori know by July 1. Watch
your Communicator for more info or contact Lori
DeBoer at 715-491-0221 or [email protected].
Become a St Croix County Fair Volunteer!
Our county fair is a very rewarding, community-
based, experience that showcases our county youth.
Your help is needed: It takes a lot of help to have
the buildings ready for the county fair. So we need a
group of really strong people to begin work at 9
a.m. on July 12. The morning crew will be moving
items from the open class building to the highway
building. They will also be moving large tables and
displays stored on top of each other down to one
level in the Cloverbud/Exploring building.
At 1 p.m. we need additional volunteers, to begin
to put displays together and in position for entry day.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. we will be able to utilize all
volunteers who can sweep, wash, paint, move
benches, and other types of jobs to have the
fairgrounds all set for projects to arrive the next
week. Please consider how you can help out to begin
to make the buildings ready for the county fair.
Remember many hands make less work for everyone.
Judging Day helpers will mainly make sure projects
are clerked and help members find their project
areas. You may also fill in for judges helpers if
needed. Also you may be setting up displays and
cleaning up on the late shift (8-10:00pm).
EXHIBIT RELEASE
We are looking for helpers to help with post fair
items on Sunday evening. We need people for
“check-out” at 4:00 p.m. At this time, we need your
smiling face and lots of patience despite being “faired
out”. You are needed to take down displays, to check
out projects at the doors, and tidy up after. Some
ladder work is needed.
The potential volunteer opportunities are at the end of
the Communicator. Sign up to help with Allison by
calling 715-531-1930 or filling out the form at the
end of the Communicator.

You Can Help Promote the Fair!
Do you know that word of mouth is the best way to
get the word out? Do you have friends or neighbors
that have never attended the St. Croix County Fair?
Do you have neighbors that don’t even know about
4-H or the County Fair? Why not make a special
effort to stop, visit about 4-H and the fair and invite
them to attend! It would be great to have more
people exposed to the wonderful fair we have. Please
do invite your neighbors to join us July 19-23 at the
St. Croix County Fair.
