VI Sunday of Easter May 17, 2020
This must rank as the most unusual Easter Season in Church history. As we begin to draw it to a close, we can reflect back on the last several weeks and wonder how it has all passed by as if we have been in a fog for an extended period. The fog has yet to lift but it will – soon, I know we all hope. Attending to the details of our spiritual lives has also been a challenge when so many issues that have shaped our lives these past few weeks have served only to become major sources of distraction preventing us from focusing on the simple as-pects of living. Years ago, the DuPont Company ran an ad campaign with the catchy, kitschy comment of “Better Things for Better Living Through Chemistry.” It was a posture of the then contemporary society that the phys-ical sciences will be able to solve all our problems and that within a few years medical science will have dis-covered the cure for all diseases. Humanity would then thrive in a sort of sanitized Edenic civilization marked by the best of everything for everybody. The present pestilential pandemic has put the lie to that aspiration. Some still believe in the perfectibility of the human person and the human condition. With the right diet and proper amount of exercise all will be well. Throw in the right education at the right schools with the best of connections an individual will be on the rosy road of relaxation and riches for the rest of his or her pleasant life and all will be well. St. Julian of Norwich asserted that: “All will be well. All manner of things will yet be well.” This from a cloistered religious who lived in the Middle ages. She lived in Norwich, a city second in importance only to London, in terms of Religious Life and Com-merce in Great Britain. She suffered terribly through the Black plague which was such a murderous threat to the world then as COVID 19 is to ours. She survived and penned the first literary work in English written by a woman. The work is called XVI Revelations of Divine Love. It was unusual in that it was written by a woman and written in English - both anomalies at that point in history. My knowledge of it is limited but interest in her writings has grown since the last part of the 19th century. I am usually suspicious of “revelations,” personal or otherwise, for a variety of reasons. I try to sup-press those cynical and suspicious characteristics that can emerge from my own personality, a manifestation of my Irish genome, I suspect. Currently I am again struggling with the Book of Revelation. Throughout the en-tire Easter Season, John’s Apocalypse, as it is also known, serves as the first scriptural offering in the Office of Readings. I find the frightening and almost incomprehensible imagery requires a guide. I have been reading the Jerome Biblical Commentary to help me through this annual trek with John the Evangelist, putative author. John writes from Patmos, a small island in the Aegean Sea; you could walk its 7.5 mile length in an hour. He was banished there by Rome. It was not uncommon for Roman authorities to banish religious figures they found troublesome. The decision to execute Jesus, you recall, is not because He was a religious figure. Jesus was executed because He was perceived to be a threat to the Empire. Not so John. The Romans were more superstitious than religious and on occasion they thought it better to exile rather than execute. We find ourselves curiously associated with both Julian of Norwich and John of Patmos. She had to contend with a plague and he had to contend with isolation. I am not asserting that we will all experience a dramatic revelation along the lines of the Mystic from Norwich or the Visionary of Patmos. However, revela-tions do happen; the problem is that we are often too distracted to notice them. All too often we find ourselves absorbed in the mundane and quotidian affairs of our ordinary life. Well now, we are living in an extraordinary time. Forcibly removed from the ordinary, we need to look for the revelation that will be given to us in the pre-sent times, as challenging and daunting as they may be. That revelation is not far. It is located in the family member who is present to you; no doubt present now in a new way. Recognize God in them whether they are sitting at the dining room table with you or you are in a Zoom Room. See in them the revelation of God that is possible to express only through another human being. As for you, be the vehicle through which God reveals Himself to others; those others given to you in love. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the official international humanitarian agency of American Catholics. They work to improve the lives of those in 100+ countries by responding to major emer-gencies; fighting disease and poverty; helping childhood development, and sup-porting peace-oriented organizations. Our parish has recently started a CRS Chapter. It’s initial action has been to take up Global Child Thrive Act (H.R. 4864). Passing of this bill would direct administrations to integrate early child-hood development activities and programs to improve the lives of vulnerable children around the world. www.CRS.org
Catholic Charities USA is the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church. However, their primary goal is to end poverty, especially sys-temic poverty, in the United States. Initiatives include making housing more affordable and providing healthy food options for those in need. Locally, The Catholic Charities Appeal (CCA) is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's single most important fundraiser benefiting hundreds of thousands of people in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia through Education, Social Services (CSS above), Nutritional Development Services, Evangelization, Parish and Spiritual Life, Clergy and Local Mission Activities. www.catholiccharitiesusa.org www.catholiccharitiesappeal.org
Catholic Social Services (CSS) is the humanitarian organization of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. They have a number of local programs targeted towards helping the homeless & hungry, at-risk youth, struggling families & single parents. They help im-migrants, refugees, neglected children and those with intellectual disabilities. They provide programs for pregnant teens, and court-adjudicated delinquents. CSS benefits more than 175,000 individuals annually. Motivated by its mission to serve the most vulnerable and at-risk members of our society. Catholic Social Services provides hope and creates hope for people from every walk of life.

“He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. …..“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other
contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”
Mark 12:41-44 Below are three Catholic charitable agencies to which we are annually invited to support. At St. Cornelius we have begun to form what is called a CRS Chapter. CRS Chapters are designed to educate people on the func-tion of CRS and to broaden our awareness of global needs, beyond our local community and diocese. Occa-sionally, we are asked to support immediate needs such as hurricane relief. The newly formed chapter of St. Cornelius would also do advocacy work, communicating to our government offices the need for overseas fi-nancial support. We would also be a conduit for CRS fund raising (Rice Bowl) and communicating back to our parish how those funds are used. While the agencies below are necessary and essential to supporting the well being of our sisters and brothers, it is important to understand that they are different in terms of the populations they serve and the scope of their mission.

The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant person/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and exam-
ple of the Lord Jesus: "Blessed are they who mourn;
they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4).
A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation ministry. At this time, due to the coronavirus we are all strug-gling with, we need to put our ministry on hold until a later date can be arranged. When that date can be de-termined, we will inform our current participants. Watch this space for updates.

glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14,16)
St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise inter-faith ministry in southern Chester County. Due to the corona-virus pandemic, Family Prom-ise is sheltering their guests in a hotel at this time, so there will be no volunteer responsi-bilities at the churches. Volun-teers are praying and support-ing a homeless shelter in Phil-adelphia with lunches during this time. Please consider do-nating gift cards from Acme, Aldi or Shop Rite, which are
stores close to the ho-tel. Financial contribu-tions would also be appreciated. Mail to: Family Promise, 1156 W. Baltimore Pike, P.O. Box 394, Kennett Square, PA 19348. For questions, please contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214.

Eucharistic Adoration “Souls who spread the honor of My mercy I shield through their entire lives as a tender mother her infant, and at the hour of death I will not be a Judge for them, but the Merciful Savior. At that last hour, a soul has nothing with which to defend itself except My mercy. Happy is the soul that during its lifetime im-mersed itself in the Fountain of Mercy, because justice will have no hold on it”
(Diary, 1075).” Our Lord speaking to St. Faustina We will need a second Permanent Adorer, when Adora-tion begins again, for the following times on Monday’s, at 9 am, noon, 2, 3, 4 and 7 pm and on Friday’s, at 11 am, noon and 1 pm. Please consider being a weekly Adorer for one of these times, spending an hour with Jesus in Adora-tion. Pray that Jesus will end this evil virus very soon and heal those stricken by it. Contact:

LEAD THE WAY Urge Congress to Support
those Most Vulnerable in Addressing COVID-19
It is truly a pivotal moment. The world around us has changed and we are experiencing immense uncertainty and loss. At this moment, we must come together as one human family. The Holy Father calls to us, "let us remain united. Let us make our closeness felt to those who are alone and to those who are most stricken." This crisis demonstrates how interconnected we are and how critically important it is to assist those most vulnera-ble both in the U.S. and around the world. You can help lead the way. • You can help support refugees and others on the move
living in crowded settlements with little access to clean water and soap.
• You can help ensure children who rely on that one school lunch can continue to be fed.
How? We invite you to lift your voice to Congress and stand with our human family around the world. Why now? Congress is negotiating its next emergency bill to address COVID-19 right now. We must ensure Con-gress provides funding for international programs that re-duce poverty, keep communities safe and help families survive and thrive. You can help make a difference to prevent the spread of this virus. Your action helps care for vulnerable populations around the world in need of lifesaving as-sistance. For sample letter go to
https://support.crs.org/act/lead-the-way-covid Your letter can make the difference to those
most vulnerable.
