PASTOR’S CORNER

I went to a lot of counselors as a teenager. I wasn’t a bad kid. I was a severely depressed kid, and young adult, convinced I was no good. The counselors would always tell me, “You’re too hard on yourself.” One me my first semester in graduate school I went up to my monas c history professor’s office and asked him, earnestly, how to achieve perfec on.

Yes, I really did. In my Monas c History I class with that professor, Fr. Colum-ba Stewart, OSB, we studied the origins of Chris an monas -cism, how it rose and grew in the Egyp an desert and the Judean desert, in Syria and Cappadocia. How it flourished in the fourth century, and spread to Gaul. Everywhere in the literature you found that word: “perfec on.”

Ever since I first encountered The Life of Antony* in that class, I’ve celebrated January 17, the feast day of St. Anthony of Egypt. I took the name Sister Antonia when I became a novice, a er him, and even though I’m not in the monastery anymore, I s ll think of this day as my feast day.

Anthony grew up Chris an. A er his parents died, he heard the Gospel being read in church one day when he was 18 or 20 years old. It was Ma 19:21: “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” He did this (a er giving his li le sister into the care of some “respected and trusted virgins”).

Anthony learned the discipline from other men in his Egyp an village who were living the asce c life within their homes. Eventually he went out to a tomb, beyond the edges of human habita on, where he had his famous contest with the demons: “When it was night me they made such a crashing noise that the whole place was shaken by a quake,” and they tried to terrify him into leaving the desert by taking the form of “lions, bears, bulls, and serpents, asps, scorpions and wolves. Struck and wounded by them, Antony’s body was subject to yet more pain.”

That scene has inspired countless ar sts, from Durer to Dali. And it inspired me. I wrote a star in pencil in the margins be-side the ending, when the demons depart, the roof opens, and God appears in a beam of light saying, “I was here, Antony. ... I will be your helper forever.”

I was but a 22-year-old suburban Catholic who — before I got to grad school — knew next to nothing about church history a er the Bible ended; who didn’t know the term “hagiography” and could barely name any saints who came before the Middle Ages.

PASTOR’S CORNER 1

The Way of Perfec on Saint Anthony of Egypt

By Erin Ryan

It might seem unlikely that I would take to this strange docu-ment. But my heart leapt toward The Life of Antony. I under-stood it immediately. The thoughts of my own horribleness, awkwardness, embarrassing gaffes, failure to achieve my po-ten al — these would besiege me; the demons throwing An-thony around were just like the depression throwing me around, and it hurt physically just like it hurt him.

Fr. Columba, and the introduc on to our version of the Vita Antonii, explained that much of what early Chris ans referred to as demons, we would call psychological forces within us, the anger and depression and greed that course through us and lead us to do ac ons against the will of God.

There is much more to Anthony’s story, of course. A er the tomb, he lived in an abandoned fortress for 20 years before going out and persuading “many to take up the solitary life.

And so, from then on ... the desert was made a city by monks, who le their own people and registered themselves for the ci zenship in the heavens.” Athanasius says that when Antho-ny died at 105, his body was in great shape and “he possessed eyes undimmed and sound.”

Anthony had, as far as I could tell, achieved perfec on. But here’s the thing. When I kept reading about “perfec on” in this early Chris an literature, I was thinking: “Flawless. With-out defect. Someone who never makes a mistake. Someone who always knows what to do.” But this literature was of course translated from Greek or La n, and the meaning behind that word is more philosophical. It is more along the lines of: “having a ained one’s purpose.”

It’s been 17 years or so since I asked my professor how to achieve perfec on (something I would never do now), but if memory serves, that’s what he said to me: Perfec on is not about never making a mistake. It means you are complete; you have a ained your goal.

The goal, for us, is to be like Christ and share in the divine na-ture of God. Anthony knew this and he worked on it day by day by day. Athanasius says of him that “as one always establishing a beginning, he endeavored each day to present himself as the sort of person ready to appear before God — that is, pure of heart and prepared to obey his will, and no other.”

I’m not very good at keeping New Year’s resolu ons. Antho-ny’s daily resolu on makes a lot more sense.

Siempre Adelante Fr. Mike

An Important Announcement for Safeguarding the Children

New Policy will be implemented this Thursday, January 15.

Twice a year the Safeguard the Children Commi ee for St. Cornelius Parish meets. At the mee ng, the safety and welfare of the children is discussed and we are challenged to re-examine our policies and take a look how we can be er safeguard the children within our school/parish building. We are very blessed to have an ac ve, high use facility but with that also comes high traffic along with many people who are not normally a part of our Thursday Religious Educa on sessions. It was ob-served during Religious Educa on sessions, that there were adults wandering the hallways and also using the facili es posted for the children only. With the coopera on of the Extended Care program of the school, we will begin locking all entrances to the main school building once the Religious Educa on children have entered. The doors will remain locked un l 4:50pm. At that me parents may enter the building to pick up their children. If you are bringing your child late to sessions, please check them in at the Lipski Lab and a staff member will escort your child to their room. If you need to pick-up your Religious Educa on child early, please con nue to sign them out at the Lipski Lab BUT a staff member will escort you into the building. We will implement this locked door policy this Thursday, (January 15). This policy may seem at first an inconvenience BUT do remember that we are im-plemen ng this policy for the safety and well-being of the children.
