Advent Meaning and Candle Tradition:Happy Second Sunday of Advent! The word “advent” comes from the Latin word “adventus,” which means “coming.” For Catholics, Advent is the four-week season leading up to Christmas. During Advent, we anticipate the coming of Jesus at Christmas as well as prepare ourselves for Jesus’ final coming at the end of time. It’s a time full of reflection,

excitement, and hope. The Advent candles represent Jesus’ coming as the light in darkness. One candle is lit each Sunday until all four candles are lit, and sometimes a fifth candle is lit on Christmas. Each of the candles represents an aspect of preparation during the season of Advent:

1. The Candle of Hope, Color: Purple. Purple is the primary color associated with Advent. Within the Catholic Church it symbolizes penance, preparation, and sacrifice. During the first week of Advent, we look forward to Jesus’ coming with hope.

2. The Candle of Peace, Color: Purple. During this second week of Advent, we reflect on our lives and work on becoming better-versions-of-ourselves in preparation for Jesus’ coming.

3. The Candle of Joy, Color: Pink. This third candle is pink, symbolizing anticipation and rejoicing. During the third week of Advent, we are filled with joy for the near arrival of Jesus on Christmas day.

4. The Candle of Love, Color: Purple. During this final week of Advent, we rejoice in the endless love that God has for us, which is made apparent in the birth of his Son: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16.

As of now, there appears to be no moral issues to prohibit a Catholic from receiving the vaccines produced by Pfizer or Moderna. If other vaccines are released which do have recourse to material of illicit origin (tested using fetal stem cells), then Catholic moral teaching would direct Catholics to utilize the option that is least morally problematic. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the ordinary means by which adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, purposely and freely seek the

living God by formally inquiring with the Catholic Church. Through dedicated instruction and spiritual accompaniment, and with the help of God, those inquiring embark upon a journey of growth and conversion so that, at the proper time, they may fruitfully receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist).

Those who are not baptized, or have been baptized in another Christian tradition, and wish to explore full communion in the Catholic Church—as well as anyone who has stopped the active practice of the Catholic faith—are invited to contact Fr. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CONCERTThe Music Ministry of St. Columbkille Catholic Church, under the direction of Jon Thibo, will present our annual Christmas Concert to be recorded for virtual distribution on Sunday December 20, 2020. The concert features soloists, instrumentalists, choirs, and a string quartet.

We are very grateful to be sharing this gift of music, A Season of Joy and Hope to our parish community, but because of current COVID-19 issues, we will only have immediate family of the performers in the church in attendance and will send the concert out on our parish website shortly after the concert is recorded.

This year’s concert will feature our active choirs, Handbell Choir, Chime Choir and Adult Choir, plus soloists on piano, organ and vocal solos all in the spirit of the Christmas Season. We hope you can enjoy this unique concert experience with us. All performers will be socially distanced and choir members will be in masks.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA This year our entire school will be raising funds to purchase wreaths through the honorable organization known as Wreaths Across America. These wreaths will be placed at the tombstones of our Military

Personnel at Westview Cemetery located in Brunswick, Ohio on Saturday, December 19th, at noon.

Families may donate any amount to help support this event. Each wreath costs $15.00 and our school will receive $5.00 back for every $15.00 spent to be used towards any upcoming events that support Military personnel here at St. Columbkille School.

(Acts 3:16): in the uncertainties of human life, Jesus brings life's meaning to fulfilment.

32. The experience of the people of the Covenant is renewed in the experience of all the "poor" who meet Jesus of Nazareth. Just as God who "loves the living" (cf. Wis 11:26) had reassured Israel in the midst of danger, so now the Son of God proclaims to all who feel threatened and hindered that their lives, too, are a good to which the Father's love gives meaning and value.

"The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them" (Lk 7:22). With these words of the Prophet Isaiah (35:5-6, 61:1), Jesus sets forth the meaning of His own mission: all who suffer because their lives are in some way "diminished" thus hear from Him the "good news" of God's concern for them, and they know for certain that their lives, too, are a gift carefully guarded in the hands of the Father (cf. Mt 6:25-34).

It is above all the "poor" to whom Jesus speaks in His preaching and actions. The crowds of the sick and the outcasts who follow Him and seek Him out (cf. Mt 4:23-25) find in His words and actions a revelation of the great value of their lives and of how their hope of salvation is well-founded.

The same thing has taken place in the Church's mission from the beginning. When the Church proclaims Christ as the one who "went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him" (Acts 10:38), she is conscious of being the bearer of a message of salvation which resounds in all its newness precisely amid the hardships and poverty of human life. Peter cured the cripple who daily sought alms at the "Beautiful Gate" of the Temple in Jerusalem, saying: "I have no silver and gold, but I give you what I have; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk" (Acts 3:6). By faith in Jesus, "the Author of life" (Acts 3:15), life which lies abandoned and cries out for help regains self-esteem and full dignity.

BELL RINGERS NEEDED Each year, volunteers from Brecksville, Broadview Heights, Seven Hills and Independence ring the Salvation Army bell at the entrance to Giant Eagle at I-77 and Route 82. Funds raised through the red kettle donations help people directly in all four communities. The

bell ringers work in one-hour shifts. The hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each Thursday, Friday and Saturday from now until December 24th. Any volunteers would be greatly appreciated. Please call Tony Terry at Seven Hills City Hall at (216) 525-6230 to schedule a time slot.

DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND TO LAUNCH NEW ADVENT/CHRISTMAS RESOURCE WEBPAGE

The season of Advent is here. It is a wonderfully meaningful time in the Church. However, this year certainly will be different, as together we cope with the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. All of us have been experiencing changes at Mass and other liturgical and spiritual activities due to our need to be physically distant and safe in parish gatherings. With the current pandemic guidelines in place, the question remains as to how do we best prepare our parishes, our families and ourselves to celebrate Advent and Christmas with complete intention?

With this in mind, the Diocese of Cleveland has prepared a special resource page on its website, dioceseofcleveland.org, to offer everyone a variety of user-friendly material aimed at helping to make this Advent and Christmas meaningful.

This new webpage will provide educational, formational and liturgical materials to be used by everyone to deepen their preparation and appreciation of the birth of Christ. In addition, information about how to connect with livestreamed and on-demand Masses is available, as well as inspirational resources to help us fully enter into this holy season and better prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with a welcoming heart.

WHEN FAMILY MEMBERS ARE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL

When your family members are admitted to a hospital, please call the rectory office to let us know. The hospitals no longer notify us when a parishioner is admitted, so the only way we know is if the family calls the Parish Office. We can keep them

in our prayers and add them to the Please Pray For List with their permission.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS THANK-YOU!Knights of Columbus Council 14406 would like to

thank our parishioners for being very generous again this year for our soldiers. Our parish donated $1,161.00. The Knights of Columbus were able to send 76 boxes to our troops. Our Lady of Charity Council Knights of Columbus thanks all of you!

PADUA’S CFO DRIVE-UP/DROP-OFF FOOD COLLECTION

On Saturday, December 12th, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Padua Franciscan High School will be collecting nonperishable food items. Drive up to the front of the school, open your trunk and students and faculty will take the food that you wish to donate directly from your vehicle. No need to get out of your car. All items collected will go to local food pantries as part of Padua’s Annual Christmas for Others Campaign.

service and volunteer time, and presence at Malachi Center. We are a small organization and without you, we would not be capable of creating the community change we try to each year.

COVID-19 not only changed our day-to-day operations but also brought Malachi Center different and new community needs. We took a look at our services and adjusted to those needs.

This year, we held our annual summer camp for 25 1st through 8th grade children. Our summer campers were able to practice CDC guidelines and remain socially distant while still taking part in social-emotional learning activities, practicing literacy skills, and getting out and about and exploring Cleveland!

In 2020, we served 18 children in our learning pod program. This program was adapted from the After-school program starting in September and served the children during school hours every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. In a period of educational instability due to the pandemic, Malachi Center became a hub for student learning. Your donations provided 30 Chromebooks, hot meals, dividers for desktop stations, bulk snacks, PPE/masks, games, and crafts to 18 children, adapting to the changes and challenges of virtual learning.

In addition, our homeless shower program served approximately 1,400 individuals, providing a clean shower, towel, and hygiene supplies to those in need.

In 2020, we distributed winter supplies to the homeless populations including hats, gloves, sweatshirts, thermal socks, emergency blankets, and hand/feet warmers. Your donation is keeping the homeless warm in spite of the unpredictability of Ohio winters.

Our Soup and God program brought 164 individuals together, providing a warm, home-cooked meal to the homeless men we serve. Your donations provided these men with fellowship, hot meals, and a break from the outdoors.

We also supplied around a hundred families with regular health and wellness supply kits. These kits included household cleaners, PPE/masks, hand sanitizer, and toiletries. Your donations provided supplies for each kit. We held a distribution day monthly to our families in need!
