WegatherheretocelebratetheThreeGreatDaysofourliturgicalyear.Inthemidstofourbusylivesandschedules,weneed thesedays,rituals,andprayerstoremindusofwhoweare,whatweareabout,andwherewearegoing.ThisisthetimewhenwerecallmostsuccinctlyhowourlivesareapartofthePassion,Death,andResurrectionofourLordJesusChrist.HerewewillrememberwhatitmeanswhenweproclaimeveryMass,“SaveUs,SavioroftheWorld,forbyyourcrossandresurrection,youhavesetusfree!”

Wewelcomeinaspecialwaythosewhoarevisitingus.Togetherwegatherinaspiritofdeepprayer.Andeverytimewepraytogether,wearechanged.OpenyourhearttoGod’sSpiritcallingyoutoanewlifeduringthesedaystogether.Rememberthatthesethreedaysareone celebration.Taketimeoutofyourscheduleand“staywiththeLord”inprayer,justastheapostlesdidinthegardenwithJesus.MaythesedaysofprayergiveyouanewvisionofyoursignificantplaceinourjourneywithChrist.ThenewJerusalemisourdestiny.

Hungrynowandexcited,thechurchgathersinthedarknessandlightsanewfireandagreatcandlethatwillmakethisnightbrightforus.WelistentosomeofthemostpowerfulscripturesintheBible,thenwepraytoalloursaintstostandwithusaswegothefontandblessthewaters.Herethecatechumensarebaptizedandanointed.Thesearethemomentswhendeathandlifemeet,whenwerejectevilandgiveourpromisestoGod.TogetherwegothealtarandcelebratetheEastereucharist.EasterSundaybeginsandwearereadyforFiftyDaysofrejoicing!

WebeginthePaschalTriduum–LatinforThreeDays–withthisEveningMassoftheLord’sSupper.Thesethreedaysaretheholiestinourliturgicalcalendar;infact,tosetthemapartevenmore,theChurchdesignatesthesethreedaysasitsownliturgicalseason.Afterlisteningtothescriptures,wedosomethingstrange:wewashfeet.Thepriestgoesdownonhiskneeswithapitcherofwater,basin,andtowels.Jesusgaveusthisimageofwhatthechurchissup-posedtolooklife,feellike,actlike.WehearthechoirsingtheMandatum(commandment)text,whichtheChurchappropriatelyprescribesforthistimeintheliturgy.Theactofwash-ingfeetisarehearsalfortheChristianlife,asisthenextthingwedo–theCollectiononHolyThursdayistraditionallyanofferingforthepoor.AswedoateveryMass,wecelebratetheLiturgyoftheEucharist,buttonightwehaveanopportunitytofeeladeeperconnectionaswecommemorateChristinstitutingtheEucharistatthelastsupper.Thisevening’sliturgyhasnoending.Rather,theTriduumisviewedasonecontinuousliturgyortimeofprayer.Strivetomakethesenextdaysprayerful,soyoucanfeelthepresenceofthesacredmysterieswe’recelebratingevenathome,work,andschool.WhetherwestaytoprayawhilebeforetheBless-edSacramentorleave,wearenowinthequietandpeaceandgloryoftheTriduum.

WrittenbyMartinMarklinofMarklinCandleDesign,themakerofourPaschalCandleEachyearasthesunsetsontheeveofthefirstSundayafterthevernalequinox,Christiansaroundtheworldgathertolightandblessafire.Theflamefromthatfireignitesacandle–thePaschalCandle–whichthenleadsaprocessionintoadarkenedchurch.Fromthatsinglecandle,allwhogatherlightindividualcandles.Standingnexttothispillaroffire,thedeacon,priest,orlayminister,singsthegreatEasterProclamation,theExultet.ThisancienthymnrecountsGod’ssavinghandthroughouthistory.ItcelebratesthatnightwhenChristbrokethechainsofdeathandrosetrium-phantlyfromthegrave.

Lightingacandletomarksignificantandlifechangingmoments,however,isnotuniquetotheEasterVigil.Thinkforamomentofthetimeswhenwelightcandles.Wemarkthebeginningandpassingoflifebylightingcandlesonbirthdaysandatfunerals.Flowersandcandlesimmediatelymarkthesitewhereliveswerelostduetoatragedy.Peacemarchesareheldatnightincandlelight.TheOlympicsbeginwithaflamethathasbeencarriedacrosstheglobe.Andinourhomes,candlesaddwarmthandromancetodinnerswithourbeloved.

Thisinextricablebondbetweencandlesandtheneedtomarklife’smomentstranscendsnationality,race,andculture.Itisanexpressionofwhatitmeanstobehumanandalive.

Ithasbeensaidthatacandlenotlightedisdead.Welightcandles,infact,tohavelight.Anditisforthesakeoftheflamethatacandleexists.Assuch,acandleistheverysymbolofasacrifice–waxconsumedtoproducelight.Howappropriate,then,thatacandleshouldremindusofChrist,whogavehislifethatwemighthaveeternallight.ThefinalpassagesoftheExultetextolthevirtuesofthePaschalCandle,andmoresignificantly,thecreatureswholabortomakeit.Speaktoanybeekeeper,andyouwillquicklylearnofthevirtuesofthehoneybee.Beeswaxisanorganicproduct,producedbythehoneybee,andisrelativelylittleknowncomparedtotheothergift–honey–whichgivesthiscreatureitsveryname.Acolonymayhaveasmanyas60,000beesandyieldhundredsofpoundsofhoneyinaseason.Yes,thissamenumberofbeeswillproduceonlyapoundortwoofwaxduringthesametime.

Onlytheworker(virgin)produceswaxforapproximatelyeightdaysinherlife.Shesecreteswaxyflakesfromglandsonherabdomen,whichbecomebeeswaxwhenchewedandexpectorated.Theworkerswillusethiswaxtocreateahexagonalcellstructure,calledthecomb,whichwillserveasthehive’snurseryandpantry.Intoeachhexagonalcell,aqueenwilllayaneggoranursebeewillstorenectar(itscarbohydrate)orpollen(itsprotein).Thebeesbuildeachcellatprecisely5.2mmindiameterandworkentirelyinthedark.

Inthe4thcentury,St.JohnChrysostomwrote,“Thebeeismorehonoredthanotheranimals,notbecauseshelabors,butbecauseshelaborsforothers.”Whilesomenativebeesaresolitary,thehoneybee(apismellifera)isnot.Itsurvivesonlyinacolony.Itistherole-modelofcommunalliving.Tasksareundertakenbyall,foodisheldincommon,andthesurvivalofthecolonysupersedesanyindividual’sinterest.Thefemalebeelosesherlifeifshestingsanotheroutofdefense.Duringthewintermonths,beesdonothibernate.Rather,theyclusteraroundthequeenandthermo-regulatethetemperatureofthecolony.Abeewillnotsurviveapartfromthecluster.

Sinceancienttimes,thehoneybeehasbeenaniconicsymbolofindustriousness.Thephrase,“busyasabee”referstothefactthatthebeeneversleeps.Duringthesummermonths,abeelivesforonlyaboutsixweeks.Thefirsthalfofherlifeisspentinthehive,attendingtothequeen,nursingthebrood,andbuildingcomb.Itisonlyinthesecondhalfofherlifethatshewillforage,seekingnearbyflorafornectarandpollen.Sheusesthesunasher“GPS”andcantravelseveralmilesfromherhiveseekingfood.Workerbeescommunicatethelocationoffoodstoresbyaspecialdanceper-formedinthehive.Thissophisticateddance,calledawaggledance,relaysboththedirectionandthedistancefromthehive.Thescientificcommunityreferstothisbehavioras“evangelization”.

Whynot“bethebee”seekingthatwhichisbeautifulintheworld,transformingitinourownlives,andgivingbacktothecommunitysomethingevenmoreprecious.

Praying the Paschal TriduumWecontinuecelebratingthePaschalTriduumwiththesolemncelebrationoftheLord’sPassion.Wegatherinsilence,continuingourprayerfromyesterday.Theprocessionentersthechurchinsilence,andthepriestliesprostrateatthefootofthesanctuary–apowerfulimage.ThefirstmajorpartofthisserviceisthepowerfultextproclaimedfromIsaiah.Today,wehearthePassionaccordingtoSt.John.Weprayatlengthforalltheworld’sneedsintheSolemnIntercessions.Similartolastevening’sonce-a-yearritualofthewashingofthefeet,tonightweveneratethecross.Theholycrossisheldupinourmidstandwecomeforwardonebyonetodoreverencewithakiss,bow,orgenuflection.Thechurchenvironmentisbarrenforthisliturgy.Likewise,themusicforthisserviceisverysolemnandsimple.Wecontinueinfasting,prayerandvigil,inrestandquietthroughSaturday.
