Pygmalion was the king of Cyprus in Greek mythology, who fell in love with a statue of the sea nymph Galatea. The krewe bearing his name was founded in 2000 by a group of Carnival veterans who wanted to strengthen the quality of parades scheduled for the fi rst weekend of the parade season in New Orleans. The male and female group paraded on the Mid-City/downtown parade route for its fi rst two years, before switching to the popular uptown parade route. www.kreweofpygmalion.org

PYGMALIONVIAGGIA IN ITALIA is the theme of Pygmalion’s 25-fl oat procession. Float

subjects include such Italian cities and landmarks as Naples, Sistine Chapel and Venice. Rizzuto & Company constructs all fl oats and the costumes are designed by D&D Creations. The 21st annual parade will feature nearly 70 units and features a new title fl oat and new fl oats for the maids. Mr. Cary Oswald reigns as King Pygmalion XXI, and Miss Kalli Mercer rides as Queen Pygmalion XXI. The 550 male and female members will throw lighted themed logo beads, wands, Venetian masks, roses, and bracelets along with several colors of doubloons. The Gala Bal Masque is scheduled for February 1, 2020, at the New Orleans Sheraton Hotel.

Renowned for the discipline of its people, Sparta was a city-state in southern Greece. This Carnival club was founded in 1951. After successfully staging tableau balls for nearly three decades, the Knights joined the parading scene in 1981 with a traditional-style parade that used innova-tions employed by newer krewes. In its 68-year history only three captains have led the Knights of Sparta. Sparta is the fi rst parade of the season to present fl am-beaux carriers and a mule-drawn King’s fl oat. www.knightsofsparta.com

The 300 Knights of Sparta plan a 17-fl oat parade with the theme ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE. Float subjects include Via Veneto in Rome, Avenue

de Champs Elysees–Paris, and St. Charles Avenue-New Orleans. The captain, his shadow, and an honor guard of offi cers will appear on horseback. The parade also features traditional fl ambeaux and Clydesdale-drawn king’s and signature fl oats. Mr. Fabian Er-rol Miller and Miss Shannon Barbara Garrety will reign as king and queen. The prince and princess from Spartan Charities will ride on their own fl oat. The most collect-ible throw is the LED Spartan helmet. Krewe-emblemed throws include koozies and LED throw beads, crest beads, warrior necklaces, and rings. Doubloons to be thrown include red and green aluminum and special cut out Spartan helmet doubloons. The Sparta ball is staged at the Pontchartrain Center on February 7, 2020.
