It is held annually for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is designed to give the Federal Government data to track student progress through their schooling life. Dear Parents/Guardians

Welcome back everyone, I hope you all had a terrific time with your children over the school holidays. Term Two will be very busy with NAPLAN, Sporting Carnivals, incursions and re-ports. We will even manage to fit some teaching and learning in there somewhere.

St Cecilia’s is a Catholic Primary School and as such we include prayer as a way of life. We expect all parents to support the school in this matter even if you don’t pray at home. Pray-er is a way of saying thank you or it is often used as a way of having quiet time and thinking about what we are grateful for.

The prayer used in this newsletter represents the three core values St Cecilia’s holds dear-est; FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDSHIP. If we all strive to achieve those things mentioned in the prayer we know we are walking in the footsteps of Jesus.

NAPLAN NAPLAN testing will commence in Week Three this term. It is held annually for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is designed to give the Federal Government data to track student progress through their schooling life. This information is used to help develop education strategies to enhance the curriculum designed by the Australian Government. It is not de-signed to classify students or put them in any ranking for further studies.

I would encourage parents to not make a ‘big deal’ out of the testing and treat it as any nor-mal test their child/children might take. Your children will reflect your attitude towards the testing and this can cause anxiety and stress. The best way to help your children is to be positive about the tests, and to ensure they have a good sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on their testing days.

No Catholic School should be using NAPLAN results as a basis of enrolment. Schools will use NAPLAN data, along with their own testing, to stream students into their ability levels.

Faith Family Friendship

School Prayer Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for keeping us safe over the holiday break.

Bless our school families as we continue our learning journey this term. Give all students the will to do their best, to be kind to others,

to have enthusiasm for things that are good. Guide them to grow their gifts and use them for you in service to others.

Bless our staff that they may meet the needs of all our students and have the wisdom for the right word at the right time as they guide student learning.

Bless our parents that they continue to give good guidance and support to their children.

Thank you for the gift of Your Son who walks with us each day and is part of our life now not just in the world to come.

Amen

Canada Study Tour I was fortunate enough to be selected to go to Canada on a study tour organised by Catholic Education Western Australia. The tour allowed a group of Principals and office staff to study and observe the Canadian education sys-tem and compare it to our own system. What we found is there are many similarities and a few differences be-tween both systems. Overall, our Catholic Education system compares very favourably to the different provinces in Canada. On a school level, we are incorporating many of the techniques and strategies the Canadian system us-es. One of the main foci we discovered was the need to develop teaching strategies and skills that will have a di-rect impact on student learning. In that area we are equal with what the Canadian provinces are doing. It was grat-ifying to learn that what we are doing at St Cecilia’s for our students is also being done in Canada.

Mothers Day We all know that mothers are wonderful people and give so much to their children and families. I would like to thank the mothers at St Cecilia’s for everything you do for your children and the school. I hope Sunday is special for you and you all enjoy the time you spend with your families.

Yours in FAITH, FAMILY and FRIENDSHIP

Peter Allen Principal

Sacrament of First Holy Communion We pray for our students who are preparing to make their First Holy Communion later this term. Children have been attending the Sunday Masses and have been receiving weekly activities to complete at home with their fami-lies. These activities are important as they support the learning that is taking place at school during Religious Edu-cation lessons and involves the family in the spiritual journey that these children are preparing for. These activities are handed out at Mass each week so it is important that you are attending Mass to receive these activities. If you are unable to attend the weekly Mass, please speak with your parish priest. Important dates for Communion are as follows: Second Family Meeting : Thursday 17 May 6:30pm, St Cecilia’s school hall Rehearsal : Saturday 19 May (St John the Baptist 1:00pm; St Cecilia’s 3:00pm) First Holy Communion : St John the Baptist – Saturday 02 June 7:00pm

Confirmation Next week, enrolment letters for the Sacrament of Confirmation will be sent home with Year Five and Six students. The enrolment date for Confirmation is the weekend of Saturday 26/Sunday 27 May at your local parish. This is a very important sacrament and as is mentioned in the letter, it is important that you carefully discuss this sacrament with your child to ensure that they are ready to take part. As with all sacraments, it is important that you make the commitment to attend Mass regularly and the family meetings to help support your child with their preparation. Important dates for Confirmation are as follows: Enrolment Mass: Saturday 26/Sunday 27 May – Local parish times First Family Meeting: Thursday 14 June 6:30pm St Cecilia’s school hall Second Family Meeting: Thursday 02 August 6:30pm St Cecilia’s school hall Confirmation Retreat Day: Friday 10 August Rehearsal: Saturday 11 August (St John the Baptist 1:00pm; St Cecilia’s 3:00pm) Confirmation: St John the Baptist - Saturday 18 August 7:00pm (TBC) St Cecilia’s – Sunday 19 August 8:00am (TBC)

Caritas and Project Compassion Our fundraising for Caritas and Project Compassion has come to close. At the beginning of Lent, each family was given a Project Compassion box to collect loose coins at home to go towards our donation to Caritas. If you still have these boxes at home, we ask that they are all returned to the office by Monday 14 May so that we are able to

send all donations to Caritas Australia. A final total of the amount donated by St Cecilia ’s will be included in the Week Four newsletter.

Communio Week Communio is a name given to a plan to help the needy people in our own Diocese of Geraldton with money col-lected through Communio being shared amongst various charities and support groups within the Diocese to help those in need. Each year we recognise Communio Week in our school and this year, Communio Week will be during Week 6 of this term. This is a time to learn more about some of the people that our Diocese supports, to pray for these peo-ple and to raise funds for them. We will be celebrating Communio Week with a Free Dress Day and pre-order lunch to raise money to support the needy people in our diocese. A letter containing more information about Communio Week and other fundraising activities we will be doing for the Diocese will be sent home next week.

Mother’s Day Wishing all our Mums, Grandmothers and Aunts a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday 13 May. I also want to ex-tend an extra special wish to those that are mother figures; those that may not biologically be a mother but have selflessly taken on the role of mother to help make the life of a child a better one. While every day should be Mother’s or Father’s Day, I hope you enjoy this extra special day that is just for you

and being your special day, I hope you get a quiet five minutes to enjoy one of those elusive hot cups of tea or

coffee!

ICAS Testing Just a reminder that the first ICAS Test will be held this week. For parents that have looked on the website, I have changed the testing dates and all will take place on a Thursday afternoon due to my after school availability. This week is the Digital Technologies Test. It will begin at 2:45pm in the Library with all students being finished by 3:30pm. SMS reminders will be sent out a day or two before the tests with any changes to finish times included in the message.

Uniforms With winter just around the corner, now is a good time to begin thinking about winter uniforms. We have a number of winter jackets in stock in the uniform shop and while it is still relatively warm, we don ’t want students getting caught out by a cold day and not having a jacket to wear to school. In addition to the jacket, other winter uniform requirements: Boys may wear black trousers with their shirt (dress uniform) and girls may wear green tights only (not black leggings) under their dress. Green tights are available from the uniform shop but plain black tracksuit pants and trousers will have to be purchased from retail stores. Please note, black trousers does not include black jeans or tracksuit pants; black tracksuit pants are only permit-ted to be worn with the sport uniform

Students arriving late A reminder to all parents, if your child is arriving at school late (after 8:25am), a parent or guardian must accom-pany them to the office to sign them in as being late. We have had a number of students recently coming in to the office on their own to sign themselves in. It is a school requirement that an adult accompanies all late children to the office to complete the late sign in on the iPad. Thank you for your cooperation.

ANZAC Day It was wonderful to see a number of our students attend the Dawn Service for ANZAC Day during the recent school holidays. Our student group joined other dignitaries in laying a wreath at the memorial before students joined the march from the Memorial by the Esplanade Hotel down to Marapikurrinya Park. Thank you to all those that attended this special day.

Coles Sports for Schools Thank you to all our families for their support in the collection of the Coles Sports for Schools vouchers. Mrs Gould and Mrs Rozario had a lot of fun counting and bundling the 36 387 vouchers that were collected during the promotional period. These vouchers have all been posted away and Mrs Fimmel is now creating her wishlist of new sporting equipment for St Cecilia’s.

Lunchboxes A reminder that we promote healthy eating at St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School. A number of children are regu-larly bringing lollies and chocolates to school each day. While these items are nice to have as a treat every now and then, they can cause changes to behaviour and can affect student concentration and energy. Please remem-ber to pack a healthy lunchbox for your child to ensure optimal learning can take place at all times throughout the day.

Mrs Mandy Sheen Assistant Principal CONDOLENCES RIP Judi Grey, previous St Cecilia’s School Secretary/Registrar and Parent of St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School. Thank you for all your kindness and support to the St Cecilia’s com-munity. In God’s care now. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.
