Brothers and Sisters,

Today on Trinity Sunday, when our world of faith returns to the color green, we celebrate the divine quali es that have been revealed by our Triune God: Mercy, fidelity, love, grace and fellowship. I do have a warning for you: Don’t let your mind wander during the readings today! Each of them is very short, so if you are not paying a en on, you just might miss an en re reading. In each of them, a lot is packed into just a few words.

The Most Holy Trinity, the communion of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the source of all crea-on, redemp on and sanc fica on, and the origin of love, is the “Mystery of Mysteries”. We human

beings have labored in vain to comprehend, interpret and explain the mystery of the Trinity but have at the same me humbly accepted the truth that it is beyond our comprehension and understanding.

In today’s first reading, God reveals to Moses not only the divine name, “Lord”, but God’s divine essence. God is merciful. God is gracious. God is pa ent, kind and faithful. Every one of these characteris cs has meaning only in rela onship with someone else. Each of these characteris cs needs to be directed outward toward someone else. Mercy, generosity, faithfulness and so on make no sense if you are alone on a desert island. These characteris cs of God’s essence reach their greatest fulfillment in the gi of his only Son.

The three verses in our second reading are the conclusion of St. Paul’s second le er to the Corinthians. By celebra ng the feast of the Trinity today, we too are invoking on ourselves the blessings St. Paul invoked on the Corinthian Chris ans. We need the “grace” of Our Lord Jesus Christ if we are to reach our heavenly home. We need the “love of God” who is our true paternal Father, as well as the fellowship of the Holy Spirit who is within us, inspiring us to do good works. At every Mass we hear our priests bestow these blessing on each of us when they say “May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” And we reply, “And with your spirit” returning the blessings to the priest.

In today’s gospel we hear words very familiar to us: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” God ‘s uncondi onal love for his children made Him send His only Son to us. God’s love goes beyond all human condi ons and realms and penetrates each fiber of our being. The whole of the Trinity dwells within each of us when we live a sacramental life in the Church, when we pray and in our lives of good works.

St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, who died in 1906 and was canonized in 2016 by Pope Francis, had deep awareness of the indwelling of the Trinity. An ordinary girl from an ordinary family wrote: “O my God, Trinity whom I adore! Grant my soul peace. Make it your heaven, your beloved dwelling and the place of your rest.”

The Trinity is a mystery to be believed and lived and not a concept to be fully explained.

us and his desire to be loved in return. It is celebrated the first Friday a er the

feast of Corpus Chris in June. God became human. He became one of us, with a heart and a desire to be loved. Jesus is both human and divine. His en re human life was a visible expression of his divine love. He longed to reveal God’s love to humanity and to enkindle within them the fire of divine love and thus lead them to a union of love with God.
