Assessment Literacy Safe and Caring School

Safe and Caring School - Over the past two months a number of trends have led the school to pay extra attention to a couple of issues with our grade 10-12 students.

Students leaving the school at the 5 minute breaks to smoke or vape. This in turn has them coming to class late, which disrupts instruction. Students coming to class late - when the teacher starts talking, the student is marked late for the class as they have 5 minutes to transition

from one class to the next. Exterior doors – every door in the school is locked at 9am except the main west doors. This is now standard operating in the Horizon School

Division as they attempt to maintain safe and caring facilities. Students have been instructed that the doors are exits after 9am and the only entrance is the main west door. Students may open the door for one another at noon hour. This change was made due to the number of incidents where doors were being opened by the students for other students or wedged open, which compromises the building and reinforced the lates, smoking and vaping issue.

The number of lates has risen this semester and I can’t urge the parents enough to contact Sheila for a user name and password for Connect ed, which allows you to view the student marks on a daily basis, their attendance, tracks their high school credits, fees owing and fees that have been paid.

We are extremely proud of the number of students currently on the Honor Roll. In order to be on the Honor Roll, you must have a minimum of an 80% average. 7 – 18/22 8 – 18/23 9 -17/24 10 -19/21 11 – 15/19 12 – 16/21 Shed for sale - $1400 and is located on the south west corner of the school. It would cost you $1800 plus the labor, if you got someone to build this for you.

Crusader of the WEEK!

Crusaders aren’t just athletes. They are role models. Students who put effort into their academics, are responsible, and help out where needed.

They are individuals who showcase and promote St. Brieux School. People who deserve to be recognized.

Do you know someone who deserves to be recognized as “Crusader of the Week”? Fill out a nomination form and submit it to Mrs. Eisner at the

office where the forms are found. Each week a new student will be showcased and announced to the school.

PERFORMING ARTS - PIANO NEWS

Thank you to the parents of the St. Brieux piano students and an anonymous donor for providing $1100 in funds to repair the community piano housed at the school.

Fifteen piano students started the year at St. Brieux School in a side-stage room and gratefully moved into a classroom with the band program in November. The students and parents appreciate the space provided for private music education in St. Brieux.

Canada Music Week in November was celebrated with group Masterclasses and Canadian-themed food!

On December 13, Christmas Carols were in the air at Chateau Providence. The residents enjoyed the students, and staff treated the youth to treats following the recital. A second Christmas Recital was held in Humboldt on December 16 where students enjoyed playing on a grand piano for a full house.

Congratulations to St. Brieux Piano Students on their performances at the Melfort and Humboldt Music Festivals in March.

ph: 306-231-7663 [email protected] Registration is open for Fall 2019.

It has been a busy year for the Rural North Band program. 15 students from St. Brieux school joined with 38 students from other schools to participate in a variety of events. We played at Lake Lenore School’s open house, put on a Christmas concert, and participated in the Melfort music festival. The senior band students also traveled to Saskatoon in December to listen to the symphony play for a Cirque de Soleil performance.

Still to come is a Spring Concert in Lake Lenore on Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m. It is Mrs. Bates’ 20th Anniversary concert and all former band players are invited to come and play a couple of songs with us! The music is not too hard. Let Mrs. Bates know if you’re interested and if you need an instrument. Please email [email protected], ideally by May 9th.

Following the concert, the current group of band students will head to Regina and Ogema for their band trip. We will be touring the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Stone Hall Castle, and Mosaic stadium. Mr. Chad Huel will work with the bands on their music. We are going to be riding the train out of Ogema on Saturday. Should be a great ending to the year.

Students in grade 5 to 12 are able to participate in the band program. In the fall, students in grade 5 will get to try out the instruments and see if there’s one they’re interested in playing. Hopefully there will be many more St. Brieux students in the program next year.

We manage it. You just have to find time.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

Without volunteers there’d be zero extra curricular activities.

Kristen Bertrand

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because I enjoy it. I like to help people, and I like to meet new people. I love talking.

Volunteering is important to me because I want my children to value doing things you don’t get paid for. Without volunteering, certain activities would not be able to be done in our town. I want my children to be able to participate in certain activities that we need volunteers to help with.

Do you like volunteering?

I love it! Sometimes I get a little frustrated too.

What types of volunteering do you do?

I do the schedule for the theater, as well as work some shifts for the movies. I am a lector, teach children’s liturgy and catechism classes at the church. I’m a Eucha-ristic minister at church. I also do volunteering at the school.

How long have you been volunteering?

I think I have been volunteering for 21 years.

Do you remember the first time you volunteered?

I think it was being a Eucharistic minister when I was 21.

How much time do you spend volunteering?

I think about 1 to 2 hours per week. (That’s about 8 hours per month, or 96 hours per year.)

Do you travel with your volunteering? If so, how far?

Yes, I travel half an hour.

How do you manage balancing your volunteer work with your job and family?

I have an understanding and supportive family. I even invite my kids to help volun-teer with me. Sometimes I stay up later to get things I need done while others are sleeping.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

Please volunteer!
