EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS/ LA ORRESPONSABILIDAD DIARIA - RECONOCE A DIOS EN TUS MOMENTOS ORDINARIOS
Play That One Again/Tócalo una vez más How many times have you sung the church song, “Here I Am, Lord”? If you grew up Catholic and are around my age (still 50!), the answer is more than you can count. The song that quotes various verses of Scripture is sung using guitar, piano, or organ, by cantors and choirs, in traditional and modern churches. It is truly a Catholic greatest hit of the modern Church. The question is how many times when singing the refrain have you really taken to heart what you were singing. “Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.” Like the biblical figure Samuel, we are responding to the call of God by asking for clarification that we are indeed the one being called. We then follow up the question with a profound statement: “I will go if You lead me.” It is profound because we are pledging to our God that we are willing to go wherever He wants. We are accepting the challenge put forth in the U.S. Bishops’ pastoral letter, “Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response,” to become mature disciples who respond to the call of Jesus Christ regardless of the cost. We have sung this pledge repeatedly for many years. We never have any idea what God will call us to do and where to go. Sometimes the request can ask us for quite a lot. Hopefully, we respond like a mature disciple. If not, maybe we should reflect more the next time this song is played. The melody will not allow for the words, “I will see if I am busy and then de-cide to go if you lead me.” Then again, I don’t want to sing that to God, the source of all life anyway. ¿Cuántas veces has cantado la canción de la iglesia, "Aquí Estoy, Señor”? Si creciste como católico y tienes alrededor de mi edad (¡todavía 50!), La respuesta es más de lo que puedes contar. The 47th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe v Wade, will be on Wednesday, January 22. The Annual March for Life will occur on Friday, January 24 on the Mall in Washington D.C. Fr. Tony and many others from our Diocese will be there to celebrate life, from conception to natural death. The March is a very moving event with participants of all ages and from all over the country. They come together to let others know that life is precious and valued. Please join with them in prayer that day. La Marcha Anual por la Vida tendrá lugar el viernes 24 de enero en el centro comercial en Washington D.C. We, at St. Joseph, are a true community of faith and helping one another. The Community is one that is bonded by the volunteer efforts of our parishioners.
During Advent and the Christmas Season, we are appreciative of the Arts and Environment Ministry who do so much to make our Church one of most beautiful in the area. First, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all parishioners who have donated funds for the beautiful poinsettias.
Thank you to those who worked diligently to erect our Créche and create the poinsettia filled Sanctuary: Vonice and Russ Carr, Claudia and Richard Kenyon, Ethel Gerity, Jean and Jim Perry, Donna and Joe Augusto, Laurie Markowicz, Harry Lopez, Luke O’Donnell and Brian Moore. We owe a special thank you to Cadet Mary Kate Decker, and her team of Cadets, from the Coast Guard Academy whose artistic and engineering skills painted the 9x12 backdrop for the Créche. Thank you to Josie Esposito and Dan Adams who funded the wreaths and greens in the Church nave. It was so very warm, and bright, and beautiful.
Thank you to the Montanari family for the white poinsettias on the altar of St. Mary. And, thank you, Rita Moore, for updating the booklet informing parishioners of the history of the Créche.
Thank you to Caron Sheffield and her Faith Formation team, who rehearsed and dressed the children in their costumes, and who sang for the Pageant at the 4PM Liturgy on Christmas Eve.
Thank you to all the Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Altar Servers who gave of their time to serve at all the Masses during the Advent and Christmas Season. We appreciate the efforts of Carol McKenna, Diane Enders and Mary Ann Hauser, who coordinated these Ministers.
Most of all, thank you to all the Priests who celebrated the Masses and delivered meaningful homilies at all the Masses.

The Tag Sale Committee will be having its first meeting on Monday, January 20, 2020, in the Parish Hall at 6:00 pm (snow date Tuesday, January 21, 2020, in the hall). We always need volunteers for this enormous undertaking and welcome any parishioner who might have time to help out. We are hoping to use the earned profits for some needed Church improvements. The Tag Sale is tentatively planned for Saturday, April 25th, 2020. Because of the early date and other circumstances, it is imperative that we get commitment from volun-teers early in the process. There is always plenty to do. It is also important to come to this first meeting. If you can’t attend, but would like to help, please email Elaine at [email protected] for further information or your offer to help. In the meantime, please remember to set aside your clean gently used household goods, clothing, jewelry, books, etc. for future donations. We would like to make this sale even better than last year!!! Thank you so much

Reconciliation: Saturday, 3:45pm - 4:15pm or call the

Baptism: Baptism is generally celebrated the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of the month following the 10:00am Mass.
New parents must attend a Baptism preparation
meeting prior to having their child baptized. Please call
the Rectory or visit our website to fill out a form to
register your child for Baptism.
Marriage: Anyone considering marriage needs to con-
tact the Parish Office and meet with a priest at least
one year in advance of your anticipated marriage date.
Anointing of the Sick: Anointing of the Sick (previously
referred to as “Last Rites” or “Extreme Unction”) is not
reserved to the end of life but rather those who are
gravely ill or about to have surgery. This sacrament is
best when received when the candidate is alive, con-
scious and able to participate and should not be de-
layed. Anyone seriously ill, anticipating surgery or
weakened due to illness or advanced age, homebound
or in a nursing home, is encouraged to receive this sac-
rament as soon as possible.

Baptism Preparation Classes/ Clases de preparación para el Bautismo Fr. Tony DiMarco conducts the Preparation Class for Baptism for infants and toddlers for the St. Brendan the Navigator Community. Classes are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the library of St. Joseph School, 25 Squire St, New London. Classes are in English and begin at 7:00pm. Please call your Church Office to make arrangements for the class and to schedule the Baptism of your child. The next scheduled class is Tuesday, February 11th. Classes in Spanish are conducted at St. Mary’s Church, 10 Huntington St, New London. Please call them at (860) 447-1431 to make arrangements.

January 22, 2020 marks the 47th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s infamous abortion-on-demand ruling. Because of that decision, mil-lions of pre-born babies have been denied their most basic right - their right to life. On Friday, January 24, 2020, people from across the nation will assemble in Washington, D.C. to visibly express their oppo-sition to abortion.
On Thursday, January 23, 2020 at 9 P.M., buses sponsored by the Connecticut Right to Life Eastern Chapter will leave from the Norwich Municipal Parking Lot (Exit 11, I-395) and travel to D.C. to attend the March For Life on Friday, January 24, 2020. Bus fare is $70 per person.

On Sunday, February 2nd, the annual Mass of Thanksgiving for the Gift of Consecrated Life will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in the Ca-thedral of Saint Patrick in Norwich. All are invited to join Bishop Michael R. Cote in thanking God for the gift of consecrated life and for the sisters, brothers, and religious priests who enrich the Church and the Diocese of Norwich by building up God’s Kingdom with the witness of their religious commitment. The homilist for the Mass will be Father Jacinto Chapin, FI. Father Jacinto is a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate and is currently the delegate superior for the Marian Friary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Griswold, CT.

January 19, 2020 My dear sisters and brothers in Christ, January 22, 2020, marks the 47th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. On the anni-versary of this date hundreds of thousands of people gather in Washington, DC at the March for Life. This year's March is on January 24, 2020 and it celebrates the centennial anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States with the theme, "Life Empowers: Pro-Life Is Pro-Woman." The Church's teaching on abortion is firm and clear. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in #2270, "Human life must be respected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right to life." Saint John Paul II notes in Evan-gelium Vitae: The Gospel of Life, that "life is always a good". He continues: "The life which God gives man is quite differ-ent from the life of all other living creatures inasmuch as man, although formed from the dust of the earth, is a manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory. This is what Saint Irenaeus of Lyons wanted to emphasize in his celebrated definition: 'Man, living man, is the glory of God' ". For this reason, Pope Francis stated in a conference on life in May of this year ("Yes to Life: Caring for the Precious Gift of Life in all its Frailness"): "Abortion is never the answer... no human being can ever be incompatible with life... Every child is a gift that changes the history of a family... and this child needs to be welcomed, loved, and cared for." Of particular concern to Pope Francis is the health and well being of children in-utero with a challenging prenatal diagnosis. He notes, "Human life is sacred and inviolable and the use of prenatal diagnosis for selective purposes must be strongly discouraged because it is the expression of an inhuman eugenic mentality, which deprives families of the possibility of welcoming, embracing, and loving their weakest children." Yes. Life is always a good. To be pro-life is to be pro-woman. Consider the heroic witness of Saint Gianna Beretta-Molla. A physician and a mother of four, Saint Gianna died shortly after giving birth to her daughter Gianna Emmanuela in 1962. Saint Gianna once said, "We must be living witnesses to the beauty and grandeur of Christianity." With the offering of her life, Saint Gianna gave witness to the beauty and grandeur of life. She gave witness to the fact that "Life empowers. Pro Life is Pro Woman". My prayer for each and every one of us is that we will give witness with our lives to the beauty of human life. REVERENDÍSIMO MICHAEL R. COTE, D.D. Mis queridas hermanas y hermanos en Cristo, El 22 de enero del 2020, se cumple el 47.O aniversario de la decisión de la Corte Suprema de Roe v. Wade que legaliza el aborto. Cientos de miles de personas se reunirán en Washington, DC en la Marcha por la Vida, en el aniversario de esta fecha. La marcha de este año es el 24 de enero del 2020 y celebrará el centenario del sufragio femenino en los Estados Unidos con el tema "Empodera la vida: Pro-Vida es Pro-Mujer.” La enseñanza de la Iglesia sobre el aborto es firme y clara. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica establece en # 2270, "La vida humana debe ser respetada absolutamente desde el momento de la concepción.
