WELCOME TO THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITIES OF

Deacon Steve Tabor Phone: 503.769.8089

“Humility, A Virtue” Humility, a virtue exalted by the wise people of old as we find in this Sunday’s first reading from Sirach is something not popular but something that is appropriate even for our pre-sent days. St. Bernard defines humility as: “A virtue by which a man knowing himself as he truly is, abases himself.” For St. Thomas Aquinas, the virtue of humility consists in keeping oneself within one's own bounds, not reaching out to things above one, but submitting to one's superior. In the Gospel, while finding the sight of people scrambling for places of honor, Jesus takes the opportunity to inculcate vir-tues especially of humility in the guests and in us. Being hon-ored, though not necessarily bad in itself may hinder one’s relationship with God and others if it happens to be one’s rule of life. A spiritual principle called agere contra or “to act against” is a term, that St. Ignatius of Loyola made popular, to describe the deliberate effort one must make to strive to overcome his/her evil tendencies by doing the opposite of that to which one is sinfully inclined. Thus, for instance, if one has a certain weak-ness towards desiring honor, then one seeks the lowest place deliberately or if one is tempted to pray less, one consciously attempts to pray a little more. Sin is said to be a bent stick that we need to bend back in the other direction. Thus, we make deliberate choices to develop virtue in sinful areas of our life which may be unbecoming of us as Christians. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in

him.(1 Jn 2:15) Fr. Alliston Fr. Alliston Fr. Alliston Fr. Alliston

Pope Francis Teaches Us Join us for an opportunity to hear directly what our pope is saying in the Gaudete et Exsultate ( Rejoice and be Glad) is the third apostolic exhortation of Pope Francis, published on 9 April 2018, subtitled "On the call to holiness in today's world". The Pope challenges us on the path to holiness as a necessary step towards happiness. Is this only for a chosen few? Holiness stems from our dignity as human persons created by God and so embark on this path by living out the beatitudes. The Pope mentions signs of what genuine holiness en-tails.

Fr. Alliston will share his area of study with us Sept. 10th-7 pm at St. Mary's, Shaw and conclude at St. Boniface on Sept. 12th at 7 pm both will be presented in the Church.
