Exposition of Sacred Relics The Parish of The Church of St. Rocco, presents a teaching

and exposition of Sacred Relics on Tuesday, May 12 at 7:30 pm. Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with his very special ministry to teach about these holy objects. He will bring with him over 150 relics, some as old as 2000 years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Rocco, St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will also be present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate each relic. In the Church’s history many miracles and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and many have been healed through this ministry. Please do not miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and pictures of ill friends/family members which you will be able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession.

For the past two weeks we have been reading from St. John’s discourse of love. Today we are told that if we wish to remain in Jesus, we need to keep His commandments. Fair enough, right? So we look at the Ten Commandments and ask ourselves if we obey those commandments from God. I am sure most of us try our best to keep faithful to them, but it is not the only criteria by which we are called to judge our lives. Jesus reminds us that there is another criteria, actually one that is more difficult because it challenges a mindset and vision that that we are called to embrace. “This is my commandment, love one another as I have loved you.” Wow, that packs within it a much more difficult way of living. In one sense the Ten Commandments are easier - they give us specifics by which to live. This “new” commandment now puts the onus on each to live a deeper life in Jesus. How we do that will depend on the area of weaknesses in our own life that need the presence and voice of Jesus. To come to that evaluation we will surely need that time in silence with Jesus as we bring to Him our relationship, attitudes and responses in daily living. In a true sense it will be more work for us. But a work, that if done in truth, will not only make us more fruitful in our relationship to Jesus but also more effective witness to the Gospel we profess. St. John gives us some great words of encouragement from Jesus. When Jesus tells us that He now calls us friends and not simply servants we see a deepening of what Jesus calls us to. As friends we now share in the life of ministry of Jesus. We have no only been given a share in salvation but have been privileged to share in His ministry He has been given by the Father. That ministry including laying down His life for His friends. While we may not have to “die” for one another, we called to “live” for one another. We can see in these words that the hurts, needs, wants of others now becomes ours also. Sharing in the ministry of Jesus we are not only called to love Jesus more fully but hat love must take on an action and response to those around us. As Jesus did, we may need, we may need at times to put aside our own needs and comfort to serve the needs of others. It means responding in love EVEN to those who don not love us. This is the love that Jesus came to ask us to live. To live the Ten Commandments is easier, yes, it takes less thought in one sense, but the love and attitude that Jesus teaches can bring us to a greater and deeper freedom. Love, lived in truth, can be so much more fulfilling and freeing. Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. This weekend was the first celebration of First Holy Communion. I love these celebrations - the children are so innocent and sincere and it touches me deeply that they are now able to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Such a great gift! I would like to thank the catechists for their for their dedication and gifts they share in passing down our faith. They are a blessing to me personally and to each of us as the People of St. Boniface Martyr. A special thank you to Lorraine O’Sullivan, for her work as the First Communion Coordinator. She is a great gift! And of course, thanks to our D.R.E., Karen Croce, who always gives so much of herself. In this month of May I continually recommend praying the Rosary, especially as a family. Let Mary, our Mother, open you even more deeply to the presence of Her Son. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Kindergarten prepares for Easter Holy Week was a week filled with faith, instruction, and excitement for the kindergarten students at ASR. Father Gabriel came to read a story about the First Easter and Mrs. Fitzgerald read a book about the meaning and symbolism of the Easter Egg. Then class parents volunteered to participate in our Easter Egg hunt and help the students complete Easter art projects. Parents brought in breakfast and Easter treats for the class too. It was a collaborative experience that motivated kindergarten students to learn and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

Parish Information Parish Registration: We welcome all new members of our parish family. We ask all parishioners to welcome and invite new neighbors and their families to become a part of St. Boniface Martyr Parish. Parish registration (census) forms available by the main doors of the church and in the parish office for new members. Please return completed forms to the parish office. Baptism: Parents wishing to present a child for Baptism should be registered members of St. Boniface Martyr Parish. Parents are required to have a Baptism Preparation Interview and attend a Baptism class. Baptisms are celebrated on the last Sunday of the month. Godparents must be fully initiated members of the Catholic Church (having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), and provide a sponsor certificate. Sixth Sunday of Easter, May 10, 2015 A high-school junior recently pointed out that the word “friend” has lost its meaning. “Isn’t there a difference between having a real friend and thousands of Facebook ‘friends’?” Indeed there is, and the difference is trust. A true friend is someone who knows your heart because you have opened it to him or her. This takes trust. It’s risky to let yourself be known deeply. But this is just what Jesus does in these hours before his Passion: “I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.” How do you respond to Jesus calling you his friend? What do you expect of a friend? What do you think Jesus expects of you, his friend? Monday, May 11 From his birth in a stable to his travels as an adult, Jesus gave others the opportunity to take care of him by offering their shelter, sustenance, and company. It was while relaxing and dining as a guest that he imparted so many of his greatest teachings. Christians are called to welcome and serve others as Christ was welcomed and served. Consider opening your home, your wallet, your heart to strangers on a regular basis. You never know what spiritual gifts are in store. Tuesday, May 12 Feast of St. Pancras, martyr What were you doing when you were 14? Hanging out with your friends, catching a movie, studying for an eighth-grade exam? Things were quite a bit tougher for Pancras, a Roman youth of 14 who had converted to Christianity along with his family around the year 300. During the persecution of Christians by Diocletian, Pancras refused to perform a sacrifice to the Roman gods. Impressed with the boy’s determination to resist, Diocletian promised him riches, but Pancras chose martyrdom instead. Whether or not you would have had the courage at 14—or now—to make the same choice, you can honor Pancras today for the choice he made—on behalf of us all. Wednesday, May 13 Catholic Christians are a conundrum. Our creed is a litany of OMG!s (Oh my God!) literally and figuratively. We believe in one God who is three persons. We believe God became fully human while remaining fully divine. We believe in the resurrection of the dead. Even with these mysteries of our faith,

we can come to know our God personally. Theologian Karl Rahner wrote frequently of the experience of God as an intermingling of incomprehensibility and intimacy: “Thanks be to your mercy, you Infinite God, that I don’t just know about you with concepts and words, but have experienced you, lived you, suffered you.” Thursday, May 14 Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord We’ve all seen artwork commemorating the Ascension—typically Jesus hovering in a cloud above his disciples, taking his leave of this earth with a blessing and promise to return one day. We usually focus on the fact that Jesus “left” earth. But the deeper significance of this event is that Jesus’ humanity is taken to heaven with him. He enters into his glory fully embodied. What this tells us is that our own bodies, with all the aches and pains and vulnerability to illness and death, are also sacred space. God redeems all of us—soul and body. Give thanks with every breath, in every cell in your body! Friday, May 15 Feast of St. Isidore Humility comes from knowing we’re dust: literally humus, the soil. So Isidore the farmer and his wife Maria de la Cabeza, both saints, were planted in holy ground from the start. From humble beginnings, miracles spring up like grass! Today Muslims celebrate Laylat al-Miraj, the event through which their prophet rose into his destiny. Mohammed had a vision in which he meets Adam, John, and Jesus; Joseph, Aaron, Moses, and Abraham. Through these holy encounters, he discovers the necessity to bow and pray before God five times daily. Practice the humility of bowing: before the tabernacle, at the cross, in the presence of all that’s holy. Saturday, May 16 It can be hard to face the fact that life isn’t perfect. What you hope for isn’t always so and the road to change can be a long one. The journey of life isn’t meant to be perfect, however, it’s meant to perfect us—to make holy what is by working toward wholeness. Jesus longs for you to be whole. Catholic teaching defines prayer as the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God. Note the qualifier—“of good things.” But what is good? Think of it this way: What do you need today so that you can be more whole? What will allow you to be a joyful witness to the gospel? Start there!
