Newsletter September 2017 St. Bernard’s College “To Stand on Life-Giving Ground” Kia ora Koutou. It is a time of farewell for our Year 13 students and some of our Year 12s. Instead of my voice I give you our 2017 Head boy's speech given at our Senior prize-giving this week….slightly abridged so that it fits. On my first day of school in Year 7 I was a scrawny, brown skinned, 11-year-old boy with curly hair. And to this day, I am still that boy… but… with a bit more muscle and with seven years of experience at St Bernard’s College. Let me take you to Tuesday 31 st of January 2017. The first day of school at SBC this year. My first REAL day as the head boy of St Bernard’s College for 2017. Something happened on that day that gave meaning to all of my seven years at Saint Bernard’s. A year 8 boy courageously came up to me and asked what are the best things about SBC. It’s a hard question to answer when you’re put on the spot, but three things sparked to mind… OPPORTUNITY, LOVE and LEARNING. However, all I managed to squeeze out to him was… “oh probably the boys”. Looking back on that day now, I wish I had the chance to go back in time and show that boy why those three words convey the best things about St Bernard’s College… but I figured since time travel doesn’t exist… yet. Tonight, is my best chance to do that moment justice the best way I know how… Dear SBC, From the first day I met you, you have been nothing but a place of OPPORTUNITY, LOVE, and LEARNING. I walked on to the grounds of 183 Waterloo Road only knowing what my older brother had told me; and what I would eventually tell my younger brother; have fun, make friends and don’t forget to eat your lunch or someone else will eat it for you. I came back home that day with 10 new best friends, an empty lunchbox and a hungry stomach. Just like that… OPPORTUNITY, LOVE and LEARNING. During seven years at St Bernard’s College some days were scary, confusing and riddled with mistakes but without being fully aware of my purpose I was being moulded and prepared for the rest of my life without even knowing it. One of the simplest opportunity quotes comes from Thomas A. Edison, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like hard work”. The past seven years have been nothing but hard work, and in case you haven’t heard, you have to put in the work to reap the rewards, you have to do the mahi to get the treats, this year the treats have been plentiful. In year 10 I realised how people can come to fall in LOVE with a place. It happens when the heart starts to see what is invisible to the eye. When you wake up knowing that you belong somewhere, when it doesn’t matter if a gym is used as a hall, when you pick up rubbish because you want to not because you have to, when there is a mutual understanding and caring relationship between you and your teachers, when there is nothing better than lying in the summer sun, with your best mates while tunes are playing in the background, when the boys stick out their chests and sing Sagato Pelenato, when the sense of something extraordinary happening leaves you with sleepless nights dreaming of possibilities… THAT’S when you fall in love with a place. That’s how I fell in love with St Bernard’s College. So today, at the end of Year 13… I have LEARNED, not necessarily my times-tables, or the difference between supply and demand, or the point of doing algebra but I have learned the sense of community at SBC, I have learned about responsibility, I have learned about becoming a product of my own environment. I have been taught by so many people; people who have made reading from a textbook a whole lot easier, people who have taught me how to polish my shoes and iron my trousers. Learning is such a complex thing, but, if you develop a passion for it you will never cease to grow. Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things to do… and I never thought that saying it to you would come so quickly, a little too quickly. You helped me laugh, you dried my tears and you took away many fears. You came into my life and I was blessed. But, it’s time to tip my hat and say good-bye to 183 Waterloo Road. It’s not the end though, SBC will always be in my heart and I will always love this place and the people in it. St Bernard’s College will always be one of my many homes. THANK YOU, SAINT BERNARD’S COLLEGE, for giving me OPPORTUNITY, LOVE and LEARNING. - Noah Lindstrom Head boy 2017

College Sport Wellington Awards 2017

On Sunday 5 November the 2017 College Sport Awards were held at the Te RauparahaArena in Porirua. St Bernard’s College had three finalists attend the awards, thesebeing Matthew Quin (Water Polo), Dallas McEwan (Rugby League) and Ilai Tuia (RugbyLeague).

The Hutt City Youth Awards were held at Weltec on the evening of the 25th of November. It was wonderful to see that three boys from StBernard’s made it through as finalists in three of the seven categories. Lui Ioane, Angelo Cabauatan and Callum Bryan did the school proud intheir respective fields.Mayor Ray Wallace said it a "very special" occasion, an opportunity to honour young people. "And I and can assure you that we have many"said the very proud Mayor. I couldn’t agree with him more – it looks like we produce our fair share of superb young people at SBC.

Congratulations to Angelo Raphael Cabauatanwho was named as a finalist for The Hutt CityYouth Award for Overcoming Adversity. -----------

-------------------------------Angelo was nominated for his impressiveacademic and social achievement, despite hisdifficult family circumstances. Angelo is a highlymotivated young man who is a positive force inhis school and church communities.

Lui Ioane was a finalist for The Hutt City Youth Award for Embracing Diversity. He was nominated for his work with the Tokelau and other Pacific Communities. He gives so much of his time to these groups as he does here at St Bernard’s.

Callum Bryan, one of our exceptional year 13 students, took out The Goodtime MusicAcademy Hutt City Youth Award for the Arts. It was great to see Callum’s tirelesscontributions to the drama performances, photography, school magazine and St Bernard’sDay celebrations recognised with an award worthy of his talents and service. Callum wasawarded the prize by local Hutt South MP, Chris Bishop and his prize was $500 and anopportunity to share morning tea with our fantastic new Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern.Great work, Callum!

Yr8 CampOn Wednesday the 1st of November all of year 8 went to Camp Kaitoke for our 3 day outdoor education experience. The weather wasmagnificent for us and helped us have an amazing time in the outdoors.During the 3 days we all experienced many new experiences. Tramping, shelter building, sleeping in the bush in tents, kayaking, archery, abseiling and doing the dishes for 100 people!

Every student experienced something new and it was surprising to learn that over 50% of these boys had never stayed in a tent before! All of the boys were up to the challenges they faced and their positivity and support of each other was excellent.

Thank you very much to Pera, Camille, Aaron, Cee, Alastair and Pauline for coming on camp as parent support. Without this support we couldnot have our camp. Also thanks to Mrs O’Brien, Mr Nicol and Mr Harris who stayed with the boys throughout the camp.

Congratulations to all of the year 8 boys who behaved exceptionally well and were yet again representing the College in such an positiveway.

CommerceMarket DayOn Tuesday 31 October, future business men were able to puttheir skills to the test during Market Day. After many weeks ofplanning, preparing and hard work, the Year 10 commerce classeswere able to sell a variety of things to their peers and teachersduring lunch time.

One of the Year 10s involved said, "It was a pretty awesome event, you realise what customers want. The market day was a greatlearning experience and a positive way to interact with people”

Their efforts surely paid off, as many students from all year levelsflocked to Anderson Grove to purchase their goods! Overall, theday was full of learning, fun and success.

Gateway 2018:All students in 13TCC, 13TCK & 12PTH are offered a place on Gateway.Other students in Yr 12 & 13 can also go out on Gateway but you need to let Ms Lomax know you want a place.(she can’t read minds).

Anyone going out to a job that requires a Drivers licencei.e. All Trades; must have their Learner licence before they will be placed.

Gateway BreakfastIn a break with tradition we held a Working Mens’ Breakfast, in the school canteen, to celebrate the successes of this year’s GatewayProgram. 12 employers and 3 old boys joined the students and staff in an old fashioned bacon and egg breakfast. All students were presentedwith a certificate to mark their completion and many stories were shared of the placements and the offers of employment that havefollowed. We, sadly, said farewell to Ted Hanaray, who has run a highly successful ‘in school’ Building Gateway program for the last 4 years. We really appreciate all he has done for the 13TCC boys.

ScienceThe science staff would like to pass on their sincere thanks to Mr Max Smith. Mr Smith joined us in term three and has impressed with his curriculum knowledge and his joy of teaching. All the students have benefitted from his teaching. We wish Mr Smith all the very best for the future. The college has appointed a new full time chemistry teacher. He is a first year teacher who brings a wealth of senior chemistry knowledge and expertise. We wish all the senior students our very best wishes for their upcoming examinations. Students are able to come in at any time to study and seek help from their teachers. All students need to strive for merit and excellence grades from their examinations to ensure entry into Yr 12 and 13 subjects. We were very proud to host the Yr 7 and 8 young ladies from Ss Peter and Paul school for a morning of science experiences. It is great that we can liaise so closely with such an educationally progressive school. It was also a brilliant experience for us to take four sessions with their science club. It is great to see that the wonder of science is still present in our young people. All our Yr 9 students will take part in a field trip to Pauatahanui Inlet on Tuesday 28th November. This is our last field trip and if there are parents who could help us on this morning please let your son’s science teacher know. We would love to have you with us.
