ELEMENTARY FAITH FORMATION
There will be no Elementary Faith Formation classes this week, October 31st thru November 4th as Mrs. Stine will be making a” Year of Mercy” Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Mr. Schiffer will lead Liturgy of the Word at the 9&11am Sunday Masses today,
October 30th. Please pray for us while we are in the Holy Land and I will pray for all our Faith Formation families while there. Father Fred Adamson is one of the priests leading us on the pilgrimage and he will also be the celebrant for Confirmation and First Communion on April 30, 2017. Also, I ask for special prayers for Mrs. Harty–Hill, one of our 3rd Grade catechists who is also making the journey with us. Classes will resume on November 7, 2016.
Sacrament classes are closed for the 2016/17 school year. This includes 2nd, 3rd, Confirmation and Heritage. All other classes, Kindergarten, First Grade, Fourth and Fifth Grades remain open all year. Please make sure your children are in class on time and picked up on time.
Confirmation and First Communion for all third graders and above that are not being baptized at the Easter Vigil will be on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 2pm.
As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirmation please contact me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309. Have a safe week! God’s Blessings, Kathie
Dear Parishioners:
"Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted
anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over." Zacchaeus was serious about following Jesus. Maybe at the start he was just curious when he ran ahead to scale that
sycamore tree. But that curiosity developed into a life-changing experience when Jesus
called him by name. At that moment, when the Lord chose Zacchaeus to be his host for the evening, the rich tax collector "came down quickly and received him with joy."
And shortly thereafter came his promise of conversion and penance. Not only would he change his ways; he would make up for his former ones. And thus Jesus declared,
"Today salvation has come to this house."
Penance isn't a popular concept in our modern era. We like to think about God's great mercy and forgiveness, but it's not so fun to think about the lingering effects of our sin.
When Zacchaeus stole money, people suffered, especially the poor. His conversion to
the ways of God wouldn't make up for the suffering he had inflicted on people. But his choice to go back and set things aright could make a difference. Sometimes, we are
called to do something similar. Of course it is not always possible to go back and di-rectly restore the relationships or situations that we have damaged through our sins.
However, it IS always possible to offer a kind of sacrifice--often called "making repa-
ration"--for our sin. We can do something virtuous and offer it to God as a kind of deposit in the universal "bank" of goodness to make up for the unjust withdrawals we
have previously made. In this way, we too can show that we are serious about follow-
ing the Lord.
Yours in Christ Father Brian T. Bell, Pastor

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Collection for Funds & Toiletries
October 29 & 30, 2016 The second collection at all Masses the 5th weekend of the month will
support the efforts of the SVdP Conference here at St. Bernard’s. The money you give
supports people primarily living in our parish boundaries who are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries and gas, and pay for utility bills.
Also, on the last weekend there will be receptacles in the Church for the collection of
personal-sized toiletry items for the homeless. The SVdP facilities in Phoenix, which
provide showers and barber services, are in constant shortage of such items. Needed personal or travel-sized items include: soap, shaving cream, disposable
razors, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes.
We appreciate all your support for the works of the SVdP Conference here at St. Ber-
nard’s. Your contributions help us help others.
