Because they are now a holy nation, a nation of priests, the requirements of the Levitical law are no longer applicable. They are no longer God’s servants/slaves but his children and the need for the old law has been fulfilled (Matthew 5:17). The old law had precepts of a moral, legal, and liturgical type. The moral precepts still hold but with greater weight and meaning. The legal and liturgical precepts applied to slaves/servants, not to free people of God. The law of the Old Testament (Covenant), although from God and therefore good and holy, created an unbridgeable gap between God and man because man, by himself, could not keep the Law (Acts 15:7-11). Christ, through grace, has created a new man who can keep the very essence of the law -- obedience (which is the living out of love). that he might create in himself one new person in place of the two, thus establishing peace, Jesus is the new man because he is the new Adam – the one who stands for both Jew and Gentile. We, the Church, are the body of Christ. “Don’t you see? The Greek does not have to become a Jew. Rather both enter into a new condition. His aim is not to bring Greek believers into being as different kinds of Jews but rather to create both anew. Rightly he uses the term ‘create’ rather than ‘change’ to point out the great effect of what God has done. 2nd Reading - Ephesians 2:13-18 Last week’s second reading was the prayer of blessing in which God’s plan is revealed and accomplished (Ephesians 1:3-14). We now move along to the section of St. Paul’s letter which describes the union of Jew and Gentile. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, Through His death on the cross Christ has abolished the division of mankind into Jews and Gentiles. The Gentiles, who had been excluded from the old covenant, and the accompanying blessings, are now included in the New Covenant on an equal basis with the Jews. A covenant which has been ritually accomplished with the blood of Christ. Jesus’ obedience to God’s wishes, to the point of a sacrificial death, has atoned for the disobedience of Adam, and also for the sin of the golden calf. (see also Colossians 1:20-22). Jesus is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6; Micah 5:4). he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, Not only an emotional barrier but a physical one as well. Josephus tells us that in the temple there was a stone wall 3 cubits (approximately 6 feet) high separating the outer court from the inner court (The Wars of the Jews, 5.5.2§193-194). On this wall were signs prohibiting any foreigner from going further under the pain of death. “Thus was the first enclosure, in the midst of which, and not far from it, was the second, to be gone up to by a few steps; this was encompassed by a stone wall for a partition, with an inscription, which forbade any foreigner to go in, under pain of death.” (Flavius Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, 15.11,5§417). In Acts 21:28-31 we see the crowd trying to kill Paul because they thought he had brought an Ephesian Gentile into the Temple and thereby defiled it; Gentiles being unclean because they were mere idolaters. This could also be a reference to the veil which separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place. “The law that He abolished was that which had been given to the Jews concerning circumcision and new moons and food and sacrifices and the Sabbath. 8 Ways to use Holy Water August 12, 2014 By Gretchen Filz

“From long experience I have learned that there is nothing like holy water to put devils to flight and prevent them from coming back again. They also flee from the Cross, but return; so holy water must have great virtue. For my own part, whenever I take it, my soul feels a particular and most notable consolation.” – St. Teresa of Avila When we read this quote from St. Teresa of Avila, we should be reminded of the importance of holy water. As a recalling of our baptism and our baptismal promises, Catholics dip their fingers in the holy water and make the Sign of the Cross when entering the church. Our baptismal promises included renouncing Satan and disdaining sin. However, we probably rarely bring this to mind and take holy water for granted most of the time. Because we use it so regularly, it’s any easy thing to do. We must remember that this water, through the priest, is blessed by God in virtue of Christ’s baptism. The Catholic Church possesses enormous power of imparting sacramental grace, and holy water as a sacramental receives its power through the prayer and authority of the Church. The rite of blessing said over water by the priest to make it holy contains prayers of exorcism. It can banish demons, heal the sick, and send unwarranted grace upon us, and yet most of the time we cross ourselves with this water without even thinking about how holy it really is. The fact of the matter is that holy water is a powerful sacramental and we ought to use it daily. To prevent us from using it without thinking, we should consciously find ways to use it more. Holy water can be used to bless people, places, and things that are used by humans in their goal of glorifying God with their lives. Here is a list of eight ways to use holy water in your everyday life: 1. Bless yourself – This suggestion is obvious, but if we are only blessing ourselves with holy water on Sunday, then aren’t we missing out on the rest of the week? You can never have too much grace or blessing in your life. Use holy water daily. Keeping a holy water font in the home is a great idea so that you, your family, and guests can be blessed in the comings and goings from your home. Keep the font right by the front door to ensure you never leave home without it. 2. Bless your house – If you haven’t taken the time to bless your house with holy water, then no time is better than the present. Your home is the domestic Church and is in need of spiritual protection. You can sprinkle holy water in your home yourself, or have a priest formally bless your home using holy water as part of the house blessing ceremony. 3. Bless your family – Use holy water to pray and make the Sign of the Cross over your spouse and children before they go to sleep at night. Bonding the family to each other and to God in this way is a great family tradition to adopt. Keep a holy water bottle by the bedside for this purpose. 4. Bless your work space – If you work outside of the home, sprinkling your work space with holy water is a great idea, not only for spiritual protection on the work front, but also as to sanctify your daily work for the glory of God. 5. Bless your car – The car is probably the most dangerous place where you spend a significant amount of time each day. Never underestimate the power of holy water applied to your vehicle to keep you safe from harm’s way, when used in faith and trust in God. In fact, you can also have a priest bless your car with holy water. 6. Bless your vegetable garden – It was a common practice in the Middle Ages for people to sprinkle their vegetable gardens with holy water. In times when people were very dependent on crops for their livelihood, lack of rain or early frosts could be devastating. Using holy water to bless and sanctify the plants that would be used for the family’s sustenance showed their reliance on God’s grace. 7. Bless the sick – If you know of any sick friends or family, then blessing them with holy water probably counts as a corporeal and a spiritual work of mercy. If you visit the sick in a hospital or nursing home, bless their living space with holy water and leave a holy water bottle with them as a comfort in their time of need. 8. Bless your pets – Many parishes on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi have a rite of blessing for pets. Pets are loved companions for individuals and families and often provide a great service to them, and even these can be blessed with holy water because all creation has the end of giving glory to God. This also applies to livestock and farm animals that provide labor, livelihood, and nourishment to humans. Here is a simple prayer to say when using holy water: “By this holy water and by Your Precious Blood, wash away all my sins, O Lord. Amen.” There is no specific prayer to pray when using holy water, other than the Sign of the Cross, “In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” You can also pray an Our Father or even the St. Michael the Archangel prayer when using holy water. Keep in mind that the holy water has already been blessed by the prayers of the priest.

ADORATION CHAPELS The Deanery Adoration Chapel located at OLPS invites you to come spend a little time with the Lord in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Come for a few minutes or consider becoming a “committed adorer” for a particular hour. OLPS 8 am to 8 pm Monday-Friday. If anyone would like to be on the committee at OLPS please contact them. OLPS is need of adorers if you can commit please call them. Our Lady of Lourdes has Adoration on the first Wednesday of the month. St. Bernard has Adoration on Thursday. Please consider spending an hour with the Lord.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry’s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the “old religion” in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called “Bloody Mary” for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called “recusants,” from a Latin word meaning “refuse,” since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim “Recusancy” as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. CALLED BY GOD Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work.
