BLESSING OF ANIMALS

On Saturday, October 3, we’ll have our annual Blessing of Animals commemorating the Feast of St. Francis and his love and respect for all of God’s creation. We’ll meet out in front of church at 10:00 a.m. Be sure to bring your family pets to re-ceive this very special blessing.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS (Diary of St. Maria Faustina, 1052)

O my Jesus, I beg You on behalf of the whole Church: Grant it love and the light of Your Spirit, and give power to the words of priests so that hardened hearts might be brought to repentance and return to You, O Lord.

Lord, give us holy priests; You Yourself maintain them in holiness. O Divine and Great High Priest, may the power of your mercy accompany them everywhere and protect them from the devil’s traps and snares which are continually being set for the souls of priests. May the power of Your mercy, O Lord, shatter and bring to naught all that might tarnish the sanctity of priests, for You can do all things. Amen.

ORACIÓN OF LOS SACERDOTES (Diario de Santa María Faustina, 1052)

SEVENTH ANNUAL “LIFE CHAIN”

SUNDAY OCTOBER 4

A Life Chain is a peaceful – prayerful public witness for our nation to end legalized abortion in our country. It is a visual statement of solidarity by participants who oppose abortion. About seven neighboring parishes will participate again this year: St. Ansgar, St. Hubert, St. John the Evangelist, St. Marcelline, St. Mathew, St. Peter Damian and Church of the Holy Spirit. Annually, on the first Sunday in October, National Life Chain invites Christians in every town across America to stand along streets, hold inoffensive signs opposing abortion, while praying for about one hour. It is time we stand up for children. Plan to gather in the corner of East Ave. & Irving Park Rd. at 2:30, select a sign of your choice, and walk to our designated location along Irving Park Road. We will be there until 4:00PM. Invite your family members, relatives and friends to join. Bring along a lawn chair for comfort. As in the past all are invited back to St. Ansgar’s Meeting hall for coffee, hot chocolate, and numerous treats. This is a wonderful time.

September 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend we celebrate the men studying for service as priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago. On this occasion, we honor the ministry of the many priests who serve you faithfully each day, as well as those who are preparing to serve you with charity in the future. Thank you for your generous support of these men. Our seminarians are matching your sacrifice, by preparing for a life of service. They are willing to give up having their own families in order to make you and the rest of the Catholic community their family. Today, we are blessed with 78 men in formation for priesthood and another 60 high school aged young men in our pre-seminary Quigley Scholars discernment program. These 138 men are the future priests in our parishes. Perhaps you know some of these men, and like me come away inspired by their love for the Church and the generous enthusiasm that motivates them to answer the call to serve as pastors of our people. We love our seminarians for good reason: they call out the best in us. They need and deserve our prayers and financial support, as they consider forsaking all for the Kingdom of God and the service of God’s people. It is because of this commitment that I ask for your help by contributing generously to the seminarian education fund special collection this weekend. Regardless of the size of your gift, I can assure you that these young men will not be outdone in generosity. All funds collected will be used solely for the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Should you find it more convenient, feel free to make your gift online through our website at www.archchicago.org/seminarianfund. Thank you in advance for your commitment. This year as I mark my 40th anniversary of ordination as a priest, I pledge to you my daily prayers for you and your family. I ask for yours in return. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

“My Husband the Gentleman” By Sarah Hammond Even before I knew it by name, I have always believed chivalry to be very important. When I was a teenager, it was on my list of characteristics and qualities that I found particularly appealing in boys. This might sound crazy, but “yes,” I really did have a list, and I really did go over it with a pencil and check it off whenever a new boy caught my attention. This list included everything from “is Catholic” and “has a relationship with God” to “likes kids,” “makes me laugh” and “my parents like him.” Seriously, close to the top of the list I wrote, “is chivalrous.” In being on the watch for chivalry for so long, one of the first things that attracted me to my future husband, Daniel, was that he was an almost perfect gentleman (I say “almost” because no one is perfect—but I happen to think my Daniel is pretty darn close). When Daniel was with me, I never found myself opening a car door or any other door. If his arms were empty, mine immediately were cleared of whatever they were carrying (except for my purse, of course—he wouldn’t carry that!). As the years went by, none of these chivalrous habits disappeared. Daniel wasn’t trying to impress me during our courtship. He’s just a gentleman, pure and simple. Now that we’re married, there’s an even more meaningful way that Daniel has been able to be a gentleman for me. In our experience with Natural Family Planning, I can tell you that I feel so respected and well cared-for by my husband in a very big way. He would never treat my healthy body, working perfectly as God designed it, as though it was diseased and in need of being “fixed” just to be sexually more available to him at all times. In addition, Daniel would never encourage me to put my health at risk. Many dangerous side effects result in using hormonal contraception. In fact, something is not quite right when people take a daily pill or wear a patch in order to prevent a healthy reproductive organ from working properly. Contraception is not the way to go and I have a wonderful, chivalrous gentleman who knows that! This pretty much sums up what I’m getting at: one day over the summer, Daniel said to me, “I’m really glad that we don’t use contraception. I feel like that would really cause me to see you as more of an object. You don’t deserve that.” That is my “knight in shining armor.” I’m so glad I put chivalry on my list!
