It has become a tradi-tion: every year onMarch 8, Internation-

al Women’s Day, theLyceum Club elects itsWoman of the Year. In2006, the local branch ofthis international organi-zation (created in Canadain 1890, with a branch inSt Barth since 1997)selected Iris Romney,who succeeds SisterClaire, Woman of theYear in 2005. A ceremo-ny in honor of Iris Rom-ney was held lastWednesday morning inthe reception room atTown Hall, at which timemayor Bruno Magras wasthe first to pay tribute to Iris Romney whoran the municipal social services departmentuntil her retirement two weeks ago. He wasextremely pleased to a member of his staffwas designated as Woman of the Year, andhopes that this “recognition will reinforceher desire to continue to work for the goodof the collectivity.” Nicole Gréaux, thirddeputy mayor, spoke next, noting that Iris“has laid the groundwork for those who fol-low.” She also noted that Iris, who is origi-nally from Gustavia, started working for themunicipality at the age of 20, in 1968, doingvarious jobs before quickly heading up thesocial services office, a job that required alot of personal sacrifice over the years. Wan-da Lachoviez, founding president of the

Saint Barth Lyceum Club, explained to thelarge group of people in attendance that thishonor was a way to spotlight various womenfor the outstanding quality of their service tothe island. With her voice shaking, Irisadmitted that this recognition meant quite alot to her: “All that I have done for theisland, I have done from the bottom of myhear. Because I love my island and its inhab-itants.” She then added that even in retire-ment, she remains “in the service of myisland.” The final word was her daughter,who paid her the best compliment a daugh-ter can offer to her mother: “Mom, I’mproud of you!” The ceremony concludedwith the traditional champagne toast on theterrace of Town Hall.

Walking by antique stores onhis way to school, Jean-Pierre Hennequet must have

been more observant than the averageschoolboy, as his future was shaped bywhat he saw in the store windows. Fas-cinated by antiques from around theworld, he began to purchase objectsfrom Africa when he did his militaryservice in the Ivory Coast, from 1970-72. By the time he opened his first shop,Galerie Asie, on the left bank of Paris(Boulevard Saint Germain) in 1974, hehad already been to China, and wouldsoon visit almost every country in Asia,getting official permission to exportobjects over 100 years old.“You have to have an eye for what isauthentic,” Hennequet admits, sitting inhis newest Galerie Asie, right in theheart of Gustavia. Objects of metal,stone and wood, as well as textiles, fillthe gallery, including ancient statues ofBuddha, perhaps carbon-dated to verifytheir age. “Sometimes you find thingshidden inside of the statues, such as pre-cious stones,” notes Hennequet. “TheBuddha was often a gift to a monk or amonastery, and they come in many dif-ferent styles, from small simple ones toa large gold-plated one, depending onthe person presenting the gift. Peoplealso had small altars at home with aBuddha for personal prayer.” While the gallery is a treasure trove ofunusual objects, Hennequet also has

access to an Ali Baba’s cave of items hewill happily show you on his computer.From a carved wooden Asmat paddle toChinese furniture, Hennequet admitsthat the choice of what to buy is verypersonal. “Sometimes it’s love at firstsight. I look at the beauty of the object,the quality of the workmanship, the bal-ance of the style, and the personality ofthe piece,” he explains. “Some of thesepieces are over 2000 years old. If youown them, you have to be happy to seethem every morning.” His expertise inthe area of Asian antiques prompted thedepartment store, Galeries Lafayette, inParis to ask him to curate a special exhi-bition on the Indonesian archipelago; anexhibit that was later hosted by otherstores across Europe.Hennequet came to Saint Barth for thefirst time in 1979, on vacation, andreturned as a tourist several times,before returning in 2004 to open theboutique, Victoire, in Gustavia, withsome friends. “The island is magicaland this time, I decided to stay,” he says.In addition to the art and culture of Asia,Hennequet is now interested in the WestIndies as well, and his shop will soonoffer a collection of antique books aboutthe islands, in French as well as English.And who knows what other treasuresthis unusual collector will add to hisshelves, as Galerie Asie takes on a newpersonality suited to the tropics.

At first glance, therole St. BarthCetaceans has

played in the cycle of pro-tection for the humpbackwhale might seem minimal.Yet, thanks to the steadfastefforts of this associationand a few other Caribbeanorganizations like it,researchers at the Ameri-can-based InternationalFund for Animal Welfareare gathering supplemen-tary information aboutthese giant marine mam-

mals now threatened byextinction. Their informa-tion are also sent to theassociation Evasion Tropi-cale in Guadeloupe.Each year, from January toJune, during the periodcommonly referred to as“whale season”, the mem-bers of St. Barth Cetaceans,a volunteer group, spendtheir free time scouting andphotographing as manyMegaptera Novaengeliae,or humpback whales, aspossible. “We sight approx-imately 100 humpbackseach year, 15% of whichare newborns,” explainsArnaud Apremont, founderof the association that wascreated in 1996. “Aftercounting them, we takephotographs that allow fortheir identification. Eachwhale has individual char-acteristics like their color-ing, scarring, and shape. Ofthese traits, the tail is themost definitive marker,because it is as unique as afingerprint. Once weívephotographed the whales,we send the images to theIFAW. They, in turn, com-pare our photos with othersthat have been sent in fromsurrounding islands. Thisallows them to track themigratory path of hump-backs and get a better ideaof their number. Presently,the IFAW estimates thatthere are around 7,000humpback whales living inthe Western Atlantic.”

Beautiful babiesThe humpback whales thatcan be observed in St.Barth belong to a herd thatmigrates from the coldwaters of Canada to thewarmer waters of the

southern Antilles wherethey mate and reproduce. Asecond herd that can alsobe seen in passing comesfrom the Northern Atlantic.These whales make theirhome in the North Pole andmigrate to the DominicanRepublic, in Samanna Bay,to reproduce. The presenceof newborn whales con-firms the assertion thatherds migrate through St.Barth during the return por-tion of their trip. “Someresearchers think thatwhales choose a morecoastal route protect theirnewborn from potentialocean predators. Butthere’s no certainty, saysApremont. When migratingthrough, whales have noparticular itinerary. They

can travel to the west oreast of St. Barth but almostnever stop. March andApril are the months wheretheir migration through theisland is the most frequent.Paradoxically, and despitethe fact that observationcan provide precious infor-mation, it can also forcewhales to change theircourse. How can you showa whale you respect itshould you happen to seeone? Respect its territorialspace and keep a safe dis-tance. Remember, theocean is its home andyou’re a visitor”. In compliance with a lawfrom 1996, a municipalservice was opened in

early January specifically todeal with the issue of watertreatment in the manyhomes on the island. One ofits goals is a thoroughexamination of all drainagesystems that exist on theisland, at three different lev-els: when a building isdesigned, when it is built,and systems already in usein every home.

During the designphase

The water sanitation servicewill look at all building per-mits that are requested tomake sure that the drainagesystem planned conformsto the new standards set in

France. The basic principalis as follows: pre-treatmentof used water and treatmentof drains with bacteria that“eat” organic materialbefore any water is allowedto seep into the ground.Houses built before1996are not concerned by thenew law, as long as theirdrainages system don’tcause any problems, yet therenovation of such housesmust meet the new stan-dards. In the case of reno-vation, or work to thedrainage system, a repre-sentative from the munici-pal office will ensure thatthe existing system is ade-quate. If not, the owner willbe obliged to install a newsystem that meets currentnorms.

During buildingTo prevent differencesbetween what is called foron the building permit andthat which is actuallyinstalled, the law calls for acontrol to be exercised whilethe drainage system is beingbuilt. The representativefrom the sanitation servicewill visit building sites tomake sure such systemsconform to building permits:“the best thing is to call us inwhen the work starts, theearliest as possible in orderto avoid mistakes, and/orcause work to be redone,”explains Sophie Olivaud,director of the service.

Existing housesOn paper, the municipalityis required to control thedrainage systems…. ofevery house on the island!But in terms of the Her-culean task that this job rep-resents, for the time being,certain priorities have beenestablished: “First we willcontrol all houses near

swimming areas and nearprotected zones for themarine park. That’s what wejust did in Marigot. Com-plaints allowed us to verifycertain systems that werenot adequate.”

A major environmentalissue

It will be hard for a home-owner to hear that thedrainage system used for 20years is no longer appropri-ate. “Times have changed,as have the levels of waterconsumption,” explains Oli-vaud. People use muchmore water today then theydid 20 years ago, and therehas been a continualincrease in the number ofchemical products used inhouseholds. The result:“there is more dirty waterand it contains more pollu-tion than it did 20 years ago.That’s why it’s so importantto verify the systems.”Especially since Saint Barthwishes to protect its envi-ronment, one of its majortourist attractions.

Creation of a municipal sanitation servicefor water treatment

Criminal CourtCAUGHT WITH4.93 GRAMSOF ALCOHOL INTHE BLOODSTREAMIn early January, a man in astate of drunkenness wasdriving his car through Gus-tavia. He was driving whiledragging a block of con-crete that created sparks andmade a terrible noise alongthe road. He drove for sev-eral hundred yards before alocal resident managed toremove the key from thedashboard, right in the mid-dle of town. The police

checked the driver’s alcohollevel via a blood test anddiscovered a level of 4.93grams of alcohol per liter ofblood. The 55 year-olddriver was tried by the crim-inal court and received asuspended sentence of onemonth in prison and twoyears probation. He also hadhis driver’s license takenaway and required to seekhelp “This is a very seriousoffence,” the judge lecturedthe man. “Your level ofalcohol is among the high-est we have ever seen.” Thejudge also insisted that theman receive medical care.

Founded in 1996, SubProtect is a non-profit organ-zation dedicated to the protection of the environ-ment and the underwater sea beds. Last year, they

provide “Ashtrays on the Beaches.” The idea is to pro-vide the installation of cans-as-ashtrays at the entrance tothe beaches so that smokers can use the cans to collecttheir cigarette butts. 14 of the island’s 22 beaches will beoutfitted. Feel free to use them to help us keeping Saint-Barth clean!

Selected from the paintingsentered in the fourth annualpainting competition organized

by the association Saint B’Art, theartwork for the St Barth Film Festi-val poster has alsobeen reproduced on5000 pre-stampedenvelopes that go onsale on Monday,March 20, in the threepost offices on theisland. The oil paintingby Michèle Gilbertwas also the secondplace winner in thepainting competition. Sold in packets of 10envelopes for 6.04 euros, postageincluded, these envelopes are goodfor all letters to France and theFrench West Indies. To use them formail to the rest of the world, addi-

tional postage must be added. The St. Barth Film Festival, CinémaCaraïbe, will celebrate its 11thanniversary from April 25-30, 2006.The goal of this event— as defined

by its American founders, film afi-cionados Ellen Lampert-Gréaux andJoshua Harrison—is to present filmsabout the Caribbean region or madeby filmmakers from neighboring

islands. Far from Hollywood stylefilms for the most part, but not solelydedicated to “art” cinema, the festivaltries to present films that are “cre-ative, artisitic, and honest,” in their

attempt to show theworld as it really is.Projected on the tenniscourt at AJOE in Lori-ent, which serves as theperfect outdoor cinema,the films are followedby a discussion withfilmmakers and theaudience. For another ofthe characteristics of thefestival, which has asmall budget but a big

heart, is to bring filmmakers andactors as well as producers and cine-matographers to talk about theirwork, allowing us to better under-stand the world around us.
