{For staff and volunteers at St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House} June 2017

Thank you to our volunteers!

Continued over...

During this month we have held several thank you get togethers for both St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House, to recognise and celebrate the difference our wonderful volunteers make. From helping out with administration or manning the reception desk, to cheering on our runners at fundraising events, our volunteers provide an invaluable amount of dedication and support to our organisation and we wanted to show our enormous gratitude to them.

Volunteers from all areas of St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House attended, including hospice volunteers, community volunteers, fundraising volunteers and those who give their time in our retail shops. During these events, several staff members and Trustees shared updates with the volunteers who attended and spoke about the importance of each and every volunteer to the services that each hospice provides.

We held two volunteer thank you events at Chestnut Tree House on 12 June. It was a fantastic day, with over 150 volunteers attending and it was a great opportunity for staff and volunteers to get together across all areas of the hospices and meet other fellow volunteers. The volunteers were also able to walk around the beautiful grounds at Chestnut Tree House and visit the Woodland Walk area, and help themselves to a delicious spread of food, kindly made by our talented Catering Team.It was also a chance for us to recognise what volunteers do for us in so many ways and award fifteen different Long Service Awards, ranging from five years service to twenty years! Two of our thank you get togethers were organised for our Retail volunteers and you can read more about this in the Retail section of this bulletin. The last three events taking place on 28, 29 and 30 June hope to bring at least another 150 volunteers together at the Clapham and Patching Village hall and at St Barnabas House. Well done to the Voluntary Services Team for organising these wonderful events and a big thank you to all staff members who have given their time and worked hard to make them a huge success. And, of course, an even bigger thank you to all of our incredible volunteers who continue to give us their time and generously support us in what we do - we couldn’t run our services without you!

Cycle to work day - save the date!On Friday 14 July there will be a mass cycle to work for St Barnabas House members of staff.

The team will head along the seafront then up and along to Goring via a couple of pick-up points for anyone wishing to join the ‘peloton’ en route.Once we reach St Barnabas House, the Catering Team will be offering a restorative bacon sandwich and a coffee to the riders. Hugh has kindly offered that all participants can leave 30 minutes early in the afternoon. If you are interested please could you confirm by emailing [email protected]. Please also advise of any special dietary requirements.

Staff and Volunteer News...Stay cool at work

this summer!• Drink plenty of water

- especially alongside caffeinated drinks

which can actually dehydrate you.

• Make sure you are dressed comfortably - men (and women!) can wear tailored

shorts and polo shirts as long as it is

appropriate for your role at work.

• Wear sunscreen if you’re out and

about - you are susceptible to sunburn even if

you’re just in the sun for a half hour lunch

break!

• Don’t suffer in silence - if you are stuggling at work in the heat speak to your manager. Something as

simple as a fan may make your working environment more comfortable.

Please complete our staff survey!

We launched our staff survey on

Monday 19 June and to date we

have had a response rate of 46%.

Thank you to all of you who have

completed the survey so far.

For those of you who have been

away, please take 10 minutes to

follow the link and take the survey.

We really need to hear from as

many staff as possible.

We know there are lots of things

we need to address or improve

and that there are other things

we all do pretty well. This survey

will help highlight our areas for

development as well as what our

strengths are. Please get involved

and let us know what you think.

Please also make good use of the

free text boxes for any extra comments.

Deadline to complete this survey is Monday 10 July 2017.

The survey results will come back to us by the end of August and we will

be able to feed back to you by mid-September and once again ask you to

get involved to assist with any plans on what we need to do to address the

lower scores. We will also be celebrating some successes and with the benchmarking

against other charities, we will get a clear picture of how we are performing

against similar organisations.

You can find the link to the survey in your emails - if you are reading this

Bulletin electronically you can follow the link by clicking here.

If you have any queries please email [email protected].

We’re having a health check!

Thank you!

What’s this?

It’s a staff survey to check the ‘temperature’ of our organisation!

We want to know what the ‘hot’ topics of concern are and where we are ‘all cool’ and doing well. Please take part - it will take you 10 minutes and will really help us get a complete diagnosis.

You can take the survey from 19 June 2017.

The deadline for ‘health checks’ will be 10 July 2017. Please complete the survey before this date!

Look out for an email to you with a link to the survey. If you have any queries please email [email protected].

On Friday 9 and Saturday 10 June, we held two times of dedication to bless the sunflowers planted at the front of St Barnabas House, led by our Chaplain, Stephen Gurr.

Families and friends joined together to remember their loved ones at each service. Each sunflower has the name of the person to whom it has been dedicated. Thank you so much to everyone who supported this year’s Sunflower Memories Appeal, which has raised an amazing £25,417.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the times of dedication a success, including Lesley Leng who wrote the names of the loved ones on the sunflowers and then along with her husband Robert planted them. Dennis Say and Graham Wingfield who assisted visitors with car parking. Ann Rimmer, Sue Bartle, Avril Pizzey, Brien Howard, our volunteer counsellors, were there to support family members if needed. Jenny Davis who looked after reception at the 6pm service. Iris Hanney, Cora Gillies, Pam Symington, Melanie Staunton, Jean Hornby and June Rudman for helping to staff the coffee shop.

On Saturday 10 June we also held a children’s bereavement event at the hospice, alongside the Sunflower Memories blessings. Seventeen children and twenty five adults participated in some fun activities, to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones.

The Education room was buzzing with people decorating flower pots, planting sunflower seeds, making paper sunflowers to go on our memory wall, and writing and drawing at our memories table. Everyone joined in and comments included:

‘It was good to be with other children who are in the same situation. And see that life goes on.’

‘Engaging and helped us to remember. Nice to be here together as a family.’

‘Craft making and activities is great fun.’

‘In our busy lives, it gave us the chance to stop and remember Grandma and talk about her.’

The event enabled families to come together and talk to each other, to meet other families in the same situation, as well as an opportunity to remember a loved one. We hope to hold this event again next year as we continue to develop our service for bereaved children.

Spotted at St Barnabas...Welcome to our new seagull friend...

Mr Seagull has become a regular visitor to the roof window situated in the corridor between Finance, Voluntary Services and the Maintenance Team at St Barnabas House. On one of the sunnier days we’ve had recently he happily posed for this photograph, taken by our Head of Estates, Steve Williams.

Fundraising photoshoot funIn an attempt to gather more St Barnabas House fundraising images for the photo library, Caroline Smith, Marketing Officer for St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House, organised a small photoshoot at the hospice.

Several staff members kindly volunteered their time to be a part of the photoshoot and we managed to get quite a few images that we can now use on our websites, fundraising literature and social media posts. (Plus a few that didn’t make the cut but provided entertainment nonetheless - Exhibit A pictured above...)

A big thank you to all who came outside and joined in!

They grow up so fast! Two of our biggest supporters, Connor and Bradley Baker paid St Barnabas House a visit this month and we marvelled at how much they’d grown since we last saw them!

They have a bit of a way before they catch up with our Marketing Coordinator, Sam Skilton, who stands at an impressive 6’7”. However, we discovered they are fast catching up with our Donor Marketing Officer, James Millen at 5’2.5”!

We couldn’t resist the photo opportunity here!

Darts champions!Chestnut Tree House staff and volunteers were crowned Ladies champions of the Cuckfield and Lindfield Rotary Club darts marathon last week. The competition has been running for 18 years and has raised an incredible £26,717 for Chestnut Tree House over the past 11 years!

Teams taking part in the marathon choose their own venue - generally a good pub with a dart board! Members of the Rotary Club attend to keep score, and the teams take turns to throw darts for one hour, to score as many points as they can. It’s fast, it’s furious, and it’s ever so very slightly dangerous! The Chestnut Tree House ladies team this year consisted of Paula Canning from Admin, volunteer and Southern Water employee Nicky Emery, and Jayne Todd, Jo Smith and Caroline Roberts-Quigley from Community Fundraising. The winning score was 25,101 beating the previous winners (of 3 years in a row) by over 2,000 points!

The team had a fun-filled evening, although noted that it was harder work than an aerobics class! Thanks to the team for taking part, thanks to the George and Dragon in Tarring for hosting the competition and laying on sandwiches, and most of all, big thanks to the Rotary Club of Cuckfield and Lindfield for their amazing support.

Next year we are hoping to enter a ladies and a men’s team, so watch out for recruitment emails in the New Year!

Micro pigs and donkeys! The Fun and Friendship youth group had a visit from White Rock Farm last month, bringing along a selection of their baby animals. The young people said that their favourites were Rosie the donkey and the micro pig who was only a few days old - and of course watching the greedy lambs and Pig-sheep being fed.A big thank you to Emma and her team from White Rock Farm for coming to visit the Fun and Friendship youth group - everyone had a great time!

Chestnut Tree House News

Afternoon tea in the sun at Chestnut Tree House It was a beautiful sunny day on Tuesday 13 June, and the Community Fundraising Team were delighted to welcome 36 visitors to Chestnut Tree House for afternoon tea.

These visitors were invited along because they all perform some kind of role where they provide pastoral or spiritual care in their community. The group were welcomed by Hugh Lowson who spoke about some facts and figures, and some of his own experiences at the hospice. Following Hugh was Linda Perry, who gave a very moving speech about some of the things that were happening in the house and with our Community Team. Finally we all enjoyed a talk from the hospice Chaplain, Stephen Gurr, who spoke about his vital role at the hospice and in the community, with the families in our care.

Guests were treated to delicious sandwiches and scones, and then enjoyed a tour of the Woodland Walk and Memory Garden. Feedback from all the guests was that they thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and that they all learnt a lot about the services we provide. All our guests were very enthusiastic about how they can support the hospice in the future, with one vicar already keen to sign up for a sky dive!

Thank you to all the volunteers and staff at Chestnut Tree House who helped on the day and made it such a successful event.

The new summer menu at Chestnut is out and looking as tasty as ever! Dishes include:• Jacket potatoes which are always a favourite• Lovely salads for those wanting something lighter• Chicken casserole with dumplings for something

comforting• Chilli with delicious garlic bread

An outrageous cake was also made to have a change from the usual fruit salad, which went down a storm with the children and families!

Look out for the new summer menu at Chestnut Tree House!

Chestnut Tree House NewsRock Steady sibling day The ‘Rock Steady’ Sibling day on 31 May 2017 was attended by six siblings; four girls and two boys between the ages of 6 and 11 years. It was a lovely sunny day and the children enjoyed playing together in the beautiful gardens at the beginning of the day and during the breaks. They had a lunch of pizza, sausages, cakes and fruit prepared by the kitchen and were enjoyed by all. They also talked about school, life and siblings between themselves and with the adults.

It was their growth into the band ‘The Cosmic Bananas’ that was the real thrill to observe and seeing their increasing confidence was lovely. At the end of the day they played two popular songs to an appreciative audience of parents, children and staff. One parent said about her child, “she has never wanted to perform before”. A member of staff also said, “it brought a tear to my eye”.

The siblings involved all had positive feedback, with one child stating, “everyone was kind and supportive and the volunteer was really kind!” and another saying, “it was really fun and amazing.”

The Health and Wellbeing day at Chestnut Tree House was a huge success! It was very well attended with all of the clinical staff on duty able to attend.

We had Health and Beauty Level 3 students there to offer back and leg massages, manicures and pedicures and were absolutely brilliant. Kate the Hypnotherapist was providing mind massage which was really beneficial to many of the staff members and she has agreed to return to Chestnut to hold a session for all the staff - more information and a date for this to follow.

The Nutritionist and oral hygiene facilitators provided really useful advice, as always.

The Catering Team were brilliant and even though there were only two staff on duty they produced a super lunch for all twenty facilitators so a huge thank you to them.

Ken and Fliss were most helpful helping set up for the day so a big thank you to them also.

There will definitely be another Health and Wellbeing day at Chestnut Tree House in the future once a date has been agreed with the team.

Thank you to everyone who attended and hopefully you all found it extremely beneficial!

Fundraising newsJean Humphreys raises £1,255 for St

Barnabas by doing a flight in Spitfire!Jean, 83, admitted it was a lifelong ambition of hers to fly in the famous World War Two fighter plane, and her dream became a reality on Wednesday 24 May. Jean lifted off from Goodwood Aerodrome on a half hour flight as far as the Needles on the Isle of Wight and over Littlehampton Golf Course, of which she is a member.

Jean said: “It was fabulous; quite noisy and smelly, but exhilarating. I did all the appropriate things. I did what they call a floppy loop and a barrel roll and we flew over my golf course at an enormous rate of knots and frightened them all to death!

“I’ve wanted to do it for a very long time. In fact, my very first sight of the Spitfire was in 1940 in the Battle of Britain. I was standing in our garden and dad said, ‘Look up there Jean, you can see the fighters dogfighting.’ That was the first time I saw a Spitfire and all through my life I’ve thought what a beautiful aeroplane it is. The countryside looked fabulous because it was such a lovely day. I’m glad to say we’ve raised quite a nice sum for the hospice.”

It was through her membership at Littlehampton Golf Club that Jean first came into contact with St Barnabas House. The current ladies captain, Janet Madell, has chosen the hospice as her charity of the year.

Jean, who previously did a wing walk to raise money for Mending Broken Hearts in 2015, said: “Because Janet’s charity is St Barnabas House I thought it would be a splendid idea to support the hospice.”

Jean also admitted that for a few seconds the pilot of the Spitfire let her take control as the modified two-seater planes have been designed in order to teach new pilots how to fly them.

Wendy Bardsley, St Barnabas House Community Fundraising Manager, said: “When we found out that Jean was doing the Spitfire flight we were all really excited as it’s such an unusual way to raise money for charity. Jean has raised a fantastic total of £1,255 which will make a huge difference. That amount is the equivalent of the cost of ten days of care for a patient using our Hospice at Home service. On behalf of us all at St Barnabas House I would like to say a big thank you to Jean for raising such a fantastic amount for the hospice.”

Fundraising newsNight to Remember 10th anniversary! At midnight on Saturday 24 June over 750 ladies lit up the streets of Worthing for the tenth anniversary of St Barnabas House’s Night to Remember midnight walk, raising an incredible £116,049.22 for the hospice.

To mark the ten year anniversary of the event there were plenty of special additions, including a spectacular glow performance by Smoking Hot Promotions who performed at the start of the walk and at Worthing pier.

As in previous years, ladies had a choice of walking a 7, 13.1 (half marathon) or 20 mile route, taking in the iconic sights of Worthing and Shoreham.

The first walker to complete the 7 mile route was Suneeta Kambam, 35, from Worthing who was participating for the first time.

Kelly Earle, 30, from Littlehampton was the first walker to complete the 13.1 mile route. Kelly was taking part in Night to Remember for the sixth time.

She said: “The atmosphere was amazing. Everyone was in high spirits. The event was fantastically organised.”

The first walkers to complete the 20 mile route, walking as far as Shoreham’s state-of-the-art footbridge and back, were Ali Spear, 50, Ginny Cole, 51, and Lisa Oliver, 47, who all live in West Sussex.

Ali said: “We were walking to raise money for the Hospice at Home Team which I

work for. It’s amazing and the volunteers are incredible.”

Lucy Bone, Events Fundraiser at St Barnabas House, was delighted that the event continues to be such a great success, ten years after it first took place.

She said: “As this year was the tenth time we’ve held Night to Remember we wanted to make it an extra special occasion for everyone taking part.

“There were lots of new additions, including a photo booth with props for walkers to have their photo taken and male models mingling with the ladies before setting off, a glow performer and confetti cannons creating an explosive start to the walk. We also brought the memory wall out onto the route, where walkers could write messages about their loved ones.”

Over the past ten years, around 10,000 ladies have taken part in Night to Remember, and this year’s fundraising total of £116,049.22 means that the amount of money raised through sponsorship over the whole ten years is now nearly £1.5 million.

TitleNews from RetailOur retail business is one of our most important income streams, selling quality second-hand goods from 22 shops across Sussex!

Our St Barnabas shop in Henfield celebrates its 10th birthday

Staff, volunteers and supporters at our St Barnabas House charity shop in Henfield celebrated the shop’s 10th birthday in May with a party. The shop was decorated by shop manager, Kylie Yates and her volunteers, with a floral theme and there was a beautiful hand-made St Barnabas birthday cake, made as usual by our ‘cake maker’ and Retail Area Manager, Karen

Bentley.

Amongst the guests was local resident, Lily Stubbs, who has been a regular customer at the shop since it first opened and Lily cut the cake with Hugh Lowson to mark the occasion. We were also delighted that Major Tom Wye, Patron of St Barnabas House attended to help us celebrate.

Hugh Lowson presented some of the shop volunteers with their five and ten year Long Service badges. A five year badge was presented to Peggy England and ten year badges to Melanie Garrett, Janet Nickolson and Susan Swan.

Hugh also presented Kylie Yates, with her ten year Long Service staff badge as she has worked

at the shop since it first opened ten years ago.

Last year alone, the Henfield shop team processed and sold over 20,000 items, raising enough funds to support over eighty full days of care for a patient at the hospice.

The shop sells an excellent range of ‘boutique’ clothes and accessories and we are always looking for good quality donations to help raise funds for the hospice. As one of our furniture shops, we can arrange to collect and deliver larger items. The shop is situated at 3 Elm Lodge, High Street, Henfield, BN5 9DQ.

TitleNews from RetailOur retail business is one of our most important income streams, selling quality second-hand goods from 22 shops across Sussex!

We held the first of our two retail volunteer celebrations this month on 12 June. These events enable us to give a special thank you to more than five hundred and thirty of our retail volunteers in the shops, and at our Retail Distribution Warehouse.

The first was held at Chestnut Tree House which gave the chance for volunteers to experience what a beautiful and peaceful place it is. They were able to walk around the beautiful grounds in the sunshine, and visit the Woodland Walk, popular with the children and families visiting the House.

Retail is celebrating a milestone, after making a profit of over £1million for the hospice with the help of our wonderful volunteers. There were presentations from various staff members reflecting different areas of our work and how our work at retail makes a difference. There was also a moving talk from Ian Jaggard, recalling how his wife was helped by St Barnabas.

We were also able to acknowledge the long service achievements of volunteers and staff. Hugh Lowson and Trustee, David Bunce, presented the following badges:

Five year Long Service Awards were given to Chris Blaydon from our Lancing shop, Linda Doe from Rustington, Sandra Richards from Seaford and Venetta Chipchase who volunteers at both our Uckfield and Seaford shops. A twenty year badge was awarded to Jetta White, who was manager of the Arundel shop when it first opened twenty years ago, and who now volunteers there.

Nicky Matthews, manager at our Seaford shop received her five year staff badge.

We’d like to thank every one of our volunteers and also those who attended to make the events so special.

The second celebration event is being held on Wednesday 28 June and we will be reporting on this in the next staff bulletin.

Hampshire, so they used the day to launch their ‘Links to Chestnut Tree House’. They are encouraging everyone to write a birthday message on their Chestnut Tree House paper chain to send to the children, young people and families who use the hospice. Made up of colourful sunshine yellow links, the paper chain will be on display at the shop during the birthday celebrations and then presented to Chestnut Tree House. It will be on view in the hospice reception for children, families, staff and volunteers to read and enjoy the lovely messages of support from the local community.

Thank you to Jacquie and all the team at Havant for a lovely day and for such an innovative way to promote the hospice and the Havant shop into the local community.

Our Head of Retail, Jan Harper also celebrated her five year Long Service Award. She joined as Shop Manager at Havant when it first opened in 2012. In Jan’s words, what followed were “the most amazingly funny three

years, surrounded and supported by the most incredible volunteers” at Havant. Jan then accepted the role of Head of Retail, two years ago. Jan is a very loyal hard-working and talented member of staff. Congratulations and well done for the work she has put in over the last five years.

Charlotte said: “The most important part of my job is looking after everybody involved. It’s about looking after the patients and their families. I think it’s really important to be very holistic in the approach of looking after everybody.”

Meet Tracy Burrows who is a Staff Nurse in our In-patient Unit.

Tracy said: “It’s a completely new role for me which involves looking after the patients and trying to make people’s experiences here as comfortable as possible for them and their relatives.”

Meet John Phipps who has been a maintenance and garden volunteer for five years.

John said: “When I took early retirement I knew I wanted to continue mixing with all kinds of people and this gives me the opportunity to do that. I am rich in time, so I am happy to give my free time to help.”

Meet Shelley Day who joined us on a one-year apprenticeship via Chichester College.

Shelley, who is part of the Voluntary Services Team, said: “Getting the opportunity to do my apprenticeship at St Barnabas House has really proven just how much of a wonderful organisation this is. Every member of staff I have met has been so friendly, caring and giving, and I feel that reflects the hospice as a whole.”
