To Each Individual the
Manifestation of the Spirit
Is Given for Some Benefit
Last weekend, as we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus in
the Jordan River, we also had an opportunity to reflect on
our own Baptism. Through Baptism we are washed clean
of Original Sin and enter into the life of grace through the
gift of the Holy Spirit. And it doesn’t end there! In
Confirmation we receive the fullness of God’s Spirit and
are sent forth into the world as instruments of his life and
love. Yet, while we are united in the Spirit of God as his
children, we are not robots who all speak the same words
or who do identical deeds in God’s name. Instead, as
Saint Paul reminds us in today’s second reading, each
one of us shared uniquely in the gifts of the Spirit so that
we might fulfill God’s unique will for us. The journey of
our life of faith must then include discerning the gifts that
God has given us and how he wants us to use them. This
is an important part of the On Mission for The Church
Alive! initiative. If each one of us has been endowed with
spiritual gifts in what ways can we use them to enliven
the Church? Spend a few moments in prayer this week
and ask the Lord to help you know the gifts the Spirit has
bestowed upon you and how you are being called to
share them. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more
and to stay informed.

A Family Perspective (by Bud
Ozar): At Cana we get a good insight
into Mary’s parenting style. She did
not plead, argue, demand or manipu-
late. She merely pointed out the situ-
ation and trusted her son would
make the best decision.
