NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

Saint Anthony School admits students of any race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. Saint Anthony School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

PURPOSE AND USE OF HANDBOOK

This handbook exists to foster the efficient operation of Saint Anthony School. To meet this objective, the School administration is given flexibility and the ability to exercise discretion. In appropriate circumstances, the Principal has the discretion to take actions other than those specified in the Handbook. This Handbook is not intended and should not be considered to create any additional rights for students or parents/guardians.

AMENDMENTS TO HANDBOOK

This Handbook is subject to change at any time when determined to be necessary by the School Administration. If changes are made to the Handbook, parents/guardians will be notified promptly.

ACCREDITATION

Saint Anthony School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, meeting the requirements established by the AdvancEd Commission, the world’s largest accrediting and school improvement organization. Saint Anthony School is also STEM certified by AdvancED, a nationally recognized accreditation agency.

VISION

Rooted in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, Saint Anthony School, in communion with the Catholic Schools of the Paterson Diocese is committed to bringing about the Christian transformation of the world.

SAINT ANTHONY SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Paterson is to develop communities that are Christ-centered, academically excellent and welcoming, that enable students to be life-long learners and good citizens of the world.

As members of the Diocese of Paterson, we, the school community of Saint Anthony, seek to prepare our students to live according to Catholic values as they strive toward academic excellence and spiritual growth. With the cooperative efforts of administration, faculty, parents

3

and parish, we provide a moral foundation for our students by following Jesus’ example in implementing guiding principles of reason, religion, and loving kindness. We are committed to supplying our children with a solid educational background, the resources they need to achieve, and the confidence that will lead to their success.

STEM SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

We, the Catholic school educators of the Diocese of Paterson, will lead and model the teaching and integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through innovative and research-based student engagement.

STEM education, grounded in Catholic values, will prepare and empower our students to be creative, collaborative and morally responsible contributors to the advancement of the global community.

PHILOSOPHY

Saint Anthony School exists as an integral part of the parish of Saint Anthony Church. We are a Catholic school community that provides its students with roots and wings: Roots that are firmly planted in Catholic truths and values: Wings that will take them into a future of academic success and spiritual growth. We provide a solid groundwork of educational excellence, along with an environment of respect and responsibility that enables our students to meet the challenges of a changing world with intellectual, emotional, civic, and spiritual conviction

We take Jesus as our model as we embrace our children’s individuality, developing their unique skills and personalities. We celebrate not only excellence, but also effort and achievement as we strive to create a legacy of “life learners” who will cultivate their own abilities. Basic skills are taught systematically according to the development of the students. Student-centered lessons are the cornerstone of classroom instruction that focuses on developing critical thinkers.

The staff, parents, parish leaders and students work together to create a reassuring family environment that nurtures the individual child while fostering a spirit of service and community awareness. Thus, our children are encouraged to live according to Gospel principles through cooperation and mutual respect.

BELIEFS AND GOALS

The Catholic Schools of the Paterson Diocese believe that parents are the primary educators and we embrace our responsibility as co-educators. We believe all children are a sacred and shared trust. We believe that each child is a gift of God who must be treated with dignity, respect, and care.

4

Based on these beliefs, we embrace the following goals:

To integrate Gospel values and teachings into all areas of the curriculum, thus enabling students to make solid moral choices, to grow in faith, and to share this faith with others.

To provide academic excellence through a curriculum that espouses 21st century literacies: the ability to create, collaborate, cooperate, and collectively and ethically act.

To foster life-long learners who possess the knowledge, problem-solving skills, and competencies to address multi-dimensional challenges inherent within a technological and global society.

To provide an environment which enables students to appreciate and embrace creativity and beauty in life within and around them as expressed in various disciplines, art forms and nature.

To instill in our students the ability and determination to develop spiritually, intellectually, physically, morally, and socially, growing in their commitment to justice and dedication to service making our church, world, and one another better by their presence.

SCHOOL ORGANIZATION

The organization of Saint Anthony School is as follows:

Pre-K 3 year old: the Pre-K 3 year old program offers students the opportunity to develop socially and spiritually while fostering their independence. Computer science, music, art, physical education, library, and Spanish are taught by special subject teachers.

Kindergarten through Grade Two: Kindergarten through Grade Two are self-contained for the major subjects. Art, music, computer science, Spanish, library, and physical education are taught by special subject teachers.

Should a Delayed Opening emergency occur on a scheduled ½ day, the school will run a

10:00 AM - 3:00 PM schedule. Parent will send student with lunch.

Drop-Off Procedure/Dismissal Procedure

All parents are expected to adhere to the drop-off and dismissal procedures distributed at the beginning of each school year. Parents are responsible for the child’s safety until he/she is inside the building prior to school, and after he/she has been released from the school building at dismissal.

PreK3 and PreK4 students will be escorted to their classroom.

Students in K-8 walk directly to the gym without escort.

Grades 6-8 may access their lockers 7:40 AM – 8:00 AM most days before assembly.

ABSENCE

When a student is absent from school, a parent should notify the office by 9:00 AM each day of the absence. If the office does not receive a call by that time, a parent will be contacted to verify the absence. This policy is for the safety of all our students.

Students should be fever free (without the aid of medication) for 24 hours before returning to school. Students who are sent home during a school day with a fever will not be allowed to return until they are fever free (without the aid of medication) a full 24 hours.

9

Absentee Notes

Upon the student’s return to school, a written statement must be presented to the student’s homeroom teacher. The note must include the child’s full name, dates of absences, and reason for the absence. If the absence is due to a communicable illness, or if the student has been absent for three consecutive days, a physician’s note is required before a child may return to school.

Missed Assignments

Students who are absent due to illness have one day for each day of absence to make up missed assignments and exams. For example, if a student misses one day, he/she has one day to make up the missed work. Arrangements may be made with the office to pick up missed homework/classwork assignments on the day of an absence. Work may be picked up in the office at 3:00 PM. Requests for homework must be made by phone through the school office.

Non Health-Related Absence

Parents are strongly advised to schedule doctor, dental, and other appointments outside of school hours. Early dismissal of a student requires a written note by the parent for the homeroom teacher and the School Office. Parents are required to sign out the child. Students who return the same day must be signed back in.

The school calendar provides for appropriate vacations and extended weekends throughout the year. Parents are strongly encouraged to schedule family time during these scheduled vacations, not while school is in session. If you disregard this request, please alert the office and teacher prior to the student’s absence. It is the student’s responsibility to make up missed assignments and exams. Teachers are not required to reteach lessons missed. No assignment will be given in anticipation of the vacation.

Attendance and After School Activities

If a student is absent from school because of illness or disciplinary action, she/he will not be permitted to take part in extracurricular or athletic activities that same day. The School reserves the right to make an individual judgment regarding participation in extracurricular and athletic activities.

TARDINESS

Any student who enters the building after the end of drop off is considered tardy. Late students must enter the front door and proceed to the School Office for a tardy slip. The slip must then be given to the teacher upon admittance to class. Three (3) incidences will result in disciplinary action including but not limited to loss of dress down day, detention, and parent conference.

10

HOME SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

ACCESS TO RECORDS AND TRANSCRIPTS

A parent/guardian has the right to view his/her child’s academic record, academic standardized test results, health record, and emergency sheet. These records can be available upon request Records attached to publicly funded services provided through the local Board of Education of the student’s residence such as child Study Team Reviews, Comp Ed, Speech, ESL, etc. are the property of the Board. A parent/guardian who wishes to examine these records or to procure additional copies for his/her own use must apply to the Board. The school is not permitted to distribute this information to anyone, not even to a parent/guardian.

Transcripts of academic and health records may not be given directly to the parent/guardian in the event of a transfer. A request for transfer must be submitted in written form by a parent/guardian. Transcripts will be sent directly from school to school when the sending school receives an official written request from the receiving school. If the parent/guardian does not submit a request for transfer that includes an authorization to send a transcript, the receiving school must secure permission from the parent/guardian to request the transcripts from the “sending” school. A parent/guardian must give written permission for the school to forward any of their child’s classified information to another school, including high school. All financial obligations to Saint Anthony School must be met before transcripts are released.

APPOINTMENTS

We encourage productive communication between parents and teachers. If a parent needs to communicate a problem or concern regarding their child, the parent should contact the teacher. Parents who wish to meet with a teacher, or any member of the School staff, must contact the Office to arrange a mutually convenient meeting time. For the sake of good order in the School, parents may not approach staff members during the school day without arranging an appointment beforehand. Parents may not go to the classrooms without prior notification to and consent of the teacher.

Staff members who wish to communicate with the parents of a student may do so by phone, letter, email, or at a mutually convenient appointment. Teachers will not schedule appointments at times that could conflict with teaching or supervisory duties (including morning and afternoon dismissal duty). When appointments are made, both the parent and the staff member should be aware of the purpose of the conference so that all concerned may be appropriately prepared.

Parents should bring up concerns regarding their child to his/her teacher first. If the concern is not resolved, the principal must then be contacted. Should the situation require additional mediation, the Pastor may be called in as a final option.

11

CALENDAR

An updated monthly calendar will be sent home with the youngest/only child in the family envelope. Parents should also access the website calendar for last minute additions or changes. Please refer to the calendar for upcoming events, fundraisers, milk money, and special dismissals.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS/PHONE

Parents must report a change of address and/or phone number to the school office as soon as possible. Parents should also alert teachers and class moms about change of address/phone number during the school year. Parents are also responsible for changing their contact information on Alert Solutions.

CHILDREN BRINGING CASH TO SCHOOL

Please put all money sent to school in a sealed envelope with the child’s name and grade as well as the amount and purpose.

COMMUNICATION WITH ALL PARENTS

Saint Anthony School will communicate with all parents/guardians each Wednesday through the Family Envelope, distributed with the youngest/only child. Parents should check book bags each Wednesday for the home/school envelope, which contains correspondence from the Principal, Home & School bulletin, the monthly calendar, and other important forms to be returned to the office. This envelope is to be signed by parents and returned to school the next day.

Saint Anthony School also communicates with parents through Alert Solutions, the family gmail account, and the school website. Teacher websites and Power School also provide important information regarding homework assignments, class projects, and students’ progress. Parents are strongly encouraged to access these sites regularly.

To foster greater communication, the school supplies each family with a stanthonyschool.org email account.

CUSTODIAL AND NON-CUSTODIAL PARENTS

Parental Rights To School Records

Saint Anthony School abides by the provisions of applicable law with respect to the rights of non-custodial parents. Divorced or separated parents must file a court certified copy of the custody section of the divorce or separation decree with the principal’s office. The school will not be held responsible for failing to honor arrangements that have not been made known.

12

Pick-Up From School

Saint Anthony School will permit only the custodial parent, or his/her designee, to pick up the child during or at the end of the school day. The non-custodial parent will not be permitted to remove the child from school during or at the end of the school day, unless there is written authorization from the custodial parent. If there is no custodial agreement, the child may be picked up by either parent and any designee on the emergency card. In an emergency, a clearly defined, one-time telephone authorization may be acceptable.

HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

All parents, by reason of enrollment of their children in Saint Anthony School, belong to the Home-School Association, which usually meets four times during the school year. Parents are required to attend these meetings. HSA membership dues must be paid at the time of registration. To ease the financial burdens faced by the school, the Home and School Association pledges to raise a determined amount of money each year. Parents are expected to participate in the fundraisers that take place throughout the school year, and abide by the terms of the Parent Participation Agreement.

MESSAGES

The school office will always assist in emergencies, but in general, will not disrupt classes to deliver messages.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Formal parent-teacher conferences are held in November, after the distribution of the 1st marking period report card. Parents may also schedule conferences throughout the year by contacting the office and arranging a suitable time. Dismissal is not the appropriate time to discuss your child’s progress with the teacher.
