ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH
Some of the early Spanish conquistadores
came to Latin America not to help the Native Ameri-
can Indians, but to help themselves. The Kings of
Spain seriously desired to add the Americas not only
to their own kingdoms but to the kingdom of God.
But the conquistadores, greedy for gold, enslaved the
Indians, claiming that they were mere animals, quite
incapable of understanding and embracing the Chris-
tian faith.
Pope Paul III heard about this wildly selfish
attitude and realized that it presented a major obstacle
to Christ’s command, “Teach all nations.” So, on
June 2, 1537 he published an official declaration to
the contrary, addressed to all faithful Christians. It is
Satan and his minions, the Pope said, who are encour-
aging the view that American natives are “dumb
brutes created for our service … incapable of receiv-
ing the Catholic faith.” As chief shepherd of the
Church, despite his own unworthiness, he said he was
duty-bound to state “that the Indians are truly men
and that they are not only capable of understanding
the Catholic faith, but according to our information
they desire exceedingly to receive it.” He therefore
commanded that no Native American Indian be
henceforth deprived of property or liberty.
This papal bull of Pope Paul III, known as
Sublimis Deus, was a ground-breaking papal denun-
ciation of racism. The future experience of missionar-
ies who worked with the Native American Indians
was to prove him correct. Many showed themselves
receptive to the faith, and capable of real holiness.
The outstanding example, of course, is the Iro-
quois maiden, Kateri Tekakwitha. Born in central
New York State in 1656, she converted to Christian-
ity in 1676, and died near Montreal in 1680 with a
reputation of true sanctity among Native Americans
and Europeans as well. When Pope Saint John Paul II
declared her “Blessed” in 1980, and Pope Benedict
XVI canonized her in 2012, they were confirming not
only the words of Pope Paul III, but also those of
Saint Peter in today’s second reading: “In truth, I see
that God shows no partiality.” (Acts 10:34)

PRO LIFE THOUGHT OF THE WEEK - RAISING PRO-LIFE CHILDREN
It often takes many decades to correct social injustices and human rights' problems. For example, it took
many decades to abolish slavery.
Our generation might not see an end to the injustice of abortion. However, the younger generation is be-
coming increasingly pro-life and it is vitally important that we raise pro-life children. If so, they will one day
see our nation becoming one of liberty and justice not just for some, but for all human beings.
A baby and, indeed, life itself, is nothing short of a miracle. As faithful Catholics, we should be teaching
our children ---at every opportunity---that all human beings, at all stages of development, should be cher-
ished, respected, loved and protected at all times.
Also, we need to teach children that being pro-life does not only mean opposing abortion. Sometimes,
children are born with disease, Down syndrome or some other problem---and these children are nevertheless
all precious gifts from God and are extremely valuable, no matter what.
Teaching children to have a pro-life attitude is the indispensable antidote to today's
selfish, "me-first" society, with many people more concerned about pleasure or money than
the inherent value and dignity of every human life.

ADORATION CHAPEL
“At Christmas He was born a man;
today He is reborn sacramentally.
Then He was born from the Virgin;
today He is born in the mystery.
When He was born a man, His mother
Mary held Him close to her heart; God the Father
embraces Him with His voice when He says: This
is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased: lis-
ten to Him. The mother caresses the tender baby
on her lap; the Father serves His son by His loving
testimony. The mother holds the child for the
Magi to adore; the Father reveals that His Son is to
be worshipped by all the nations”
