BEARING THE RIGHT KIND OF FRUIT
Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Oct. 8 , 2017
Today’s readings focus our attention on vineyards.
Isaiah’s song concerning his friend’s vineyard begins
with inspiring and poetic images of an idyllic
vineyard where the choicest harvest is expected.
Instead, the vineyard yields wild grapes, which
causes the owner to abandon it. The psalmist cries
out to God, asking that God once again take care of
the vineyard, which is the house of Israel. The
parable told in today’s Gospel offers a stern warning
that those who commit treachery in the hopes of
attaining personal wealth will be “put . . . to a
wretched death” (Matthew 21:41). Jesus warns his
listeners not to act like the murderous tenants in the
vineyard. Instead he exhorts them to produce the kind
of fruit that will lead them to the kingdom of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

A few weeks back Fr. Tony mentioned in his article, the eleven parishioners who attended the
“Forming Intentional Disciples” workshop in Colorado Springs, would reflect about what they
learned and what they feel would help members of the St. Anthony’s and Hereford community
I had the privilege to attend Discipleship Seminar in Denver and the experience was very interesting.
I learned that 6.5 Catholics leave our church for every 1 non-catholic joining, how baptism has fallen
by 25%, and how our young adults are even open to leaving. Those raised as Catholics actually
leave the church-temporarily or sometimes permanently? With this information and concern made me wonder, are
we not getting the spiritual fulfillment that they seek? Do we lack that communication with God? Are we actually
praying and asking Christ for guidance? At the seminar they asked us one question “Where are you with Christ?”
And with that question I began to think to myself….where am I with Christ? They showed us this chart called the
Threshold of postmodern conversion chart. It consisted of where we begin with our faith in church…..we start with
trust, goes on to curiosity, then openness, seeking, and then Discipleship. The chart really helped all to see just
where and how close we were to being a true disciple of Christ and actually I thought I was close but found out that
all of us need to work on our own bridge. When we finished with the discussion they started to show us on how we
can start searching ourselves and others on how to come closer to Christ. I as well as you……have to ask yourself
“Where are YOU with Christ?” Pray deeply and let Him guide you and bring your spiritual needs closer to Him.

From the desk of our pastor, Father Tony Neusch
Webster’s tells us that the main meaning for the conjunction, “and” is: “used to connect words of
the same part of speech, clauses, or sentences that are to be taken jointly. An example “bread and
butter.” A simple word we use in daily speech. I don’t know how many times it will find its way
into this week’s homily but I know it will be there. In the gospel today the words plays a pretty
significant role. Jesus quotes to the Pharisees Psalm 118 and he adds the word, “and.” “By the LORD has this been
done, and it is wonderful in our eyes.” The word is not used in the Psalm itself.
Why pay attention to this joining word that denotes addition? Because for this Gospel it shows us
understanding. The stone become cornerstone has been chosen by the Lord, and we recognize its wonder. Not only
has the Lord made a choice and done it, we have recognized the offer of glory. A whole lot of meaning,
understanding, and wisdom for three little letters.
