SOCIAL SECURITY HELPS PEOPLE WITH HIV/AIDS

December 1 is World AIDS Day.

If you have HIV/AIDS and cannot work, you may qualify for disability benefits from Social Security. Your medical condi-tion must be serious enough to prevent you from working for at least 12 months or expected to result in death.

We pay disability benefits under two programs: the Social Security disability insurance program for people who paid Social Security taxes; and the Supplemental Security In-come (SSI) program for people who have little income and few resources. You may qualify for one or both of these programs.

The easiest and most convenient way to apply for disability benefits is online, at www.SocialSecurity.gov/disability.

We process all applications we receive from people with HIV/AIDS as quickly as possible. Social Security works with an agency in each state called the Disability Determi-nation Services.

The state agency will look at the information you and your doctor give us and decide if you qualify for benefits.

We can pay you SSI benefits right away for up to six months before we make a final decision on your claim if:

* You are not working; * You meet the SSI rules about income and resources; and * Your doctor or other medical source certifies that your HIV infection is severe enough to meet our medical eligibil-ity rules.

You can help speed up the processing of your claim by having certain information when you apply. This includes information about:

* The names and addresses of any doctors, hospitals, or clinics you have been to for treatment; * How HIV/AIDS has affected your daily activities, such as cleaning, shopping, cooking, taking public transportation, etc.; and * The kinds of jobs you have had during the past 15 years.

If you or someone you know has HIV/AIDS and is unable to work due to their condition, read our publication "Social Security For People Living With HIV/AIDS." It's available at www.SocialSecurity.gov/pubs/10019.html#a0=7.

Social Security joins the president and government lead-ers, agencies, and organizations around the world in rais-ing awareness of HIV infection and AIDS.

“Buckets of Hope” for 2017 Hurricane Victims

With the support of Bishop Olmsted, the Office of the Diaco-nate has developed a program called “Buckets of Hope”. This effort is to provide 5 gal. buckets filled with cleaning supplies to the victims in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. When disasters strike, money pours in to help first responders serve the victims. But for those who have begun to return to their shattered homes to repair and/or rebuild, life will never be the same. It is to these that we offer a ray of hope. Parishes are asked to collect the items listed below from Monday, November 20th to Wednesday, December 20th. The items are then to be deliv-ered to one of the drop‐off parishes. We are asking for any of the items on the list – one pail full of products or just one item; whatever parishioners can give to help us fulfill our mission of 500 completed buckets. For those unable to shop, checks made payable to the Diocese of Phoenix (“Buckets of Hope” in memo line) will help defray cost of buckets and added products. We thank you for your assistance to those in need. A “Bucket of Hope” contains the following items: 1. Liquid laundry detergent, Two, 32oz to 64 oz. bottle 2. 1 bottle liquid household cleaner, 12‐16 oz. cleaner that can be mixed with water (No Bleach) 3. 1 bottle dish soap 16‐28 oz. bottle any brand 4. 1can of air freshener (aerosol or pump) 5. 1 scrub brush‐Plastic or Wooden handle (No toilet bowl, kitchen or dish brushes) 6. 12‐18 cleaning handy wipes or similar reusa-ble wipes (No terry cleaning towels) 7. 6‐12 sponges (No cellulose due to mold issue) 8. 5 scouring pads (No Brillo, SOS Pads or any kind that will rust) 9. 36 to 50 clothes pins 10.
