From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT SEPTEMBER IS THE MONTH OF THE SORROWS OF MARY! RCIA

This is the time of year when our classes for those who wish to become Catholic commence. They are, of course, known as the RCIA (Rite for the Christian Initiation of Adults). If you (or anyone you know) would like to take part in them, please let me know as soon as possible.

CATECHISM CLASS

I call it “Catechism Class”, but it’s really just a discussion group of Catholics who wish to explore their faith in an adult way, and by so doing, come to a firmer grasp of it and a more ardent practice of it. We use the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” as our foundation, going through it paragraph-by-paragraph because it co-vers everything that we Catholics teach and believe. I try to explain the currents of philosophical thought that un-derlie each doctrine, exposing the principles they reflect and reveal their fuller meaning. At the same time, I wel-come questions and reactions from the attendees, and try to answer them in a way that is more in-depth than what most people received in the last religion class they had in grade or high school. You know how it is when you have a really hard-to-reach itch; it drives you crazy until you can finally scratch it, and when you do, it feels like heaven. Questions about the faith can have the same impact. So if you have any ancient theological itches in need of scratching, come join us every first and third Tuesday of the month, in the parish meeting room (located alongside the parish offices) after the Devotions (roughly 7:15PM). The first class of this year is this Tuesday, September 5.

UPCOMING EVENTS

- September 28: We will honor St. Wenceslaus, patron of the Czechs, on his feast day with an evening of Czech food, including Veprova Pecene (roast pork), Goulash, Chicken Paprkas (pepper chicken), Knedliky (potato dumplings), Zeli (Czech sauerkraut), Kolacky (little coffee cakes).

- November: Pictures for a new parish photo directory to be taken (the last one was in ’12)

-(TBD): Pilgrimage to the EWTN Network complex in Alabama. We’re working out the details now, but it should wind up being a 3-day sojourn by bus for our parishioners who would like to see and experience this vibrant and vital exercise of American Catholicism. As I’ve indicated, we have nothing planned, not even the dates for the pilgrimage, but most likely, it will be next spring. I’m reluctant to quote a price, but we’ll try to keep it to around $350.

QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC

This is going to be a hodge-podge of religion in America. See how much you know:

1. How many of the thirteen original colonies had, at one time, established churches? 2. Name the former slave who started his own Catholic newspaper in the 19th century. 3. In 1597, five Franciscan missionaries were martyred defending what Catholic doctrine? 4. Name the ex-atheist and founder of his own cult who became the most prolific defender and proponent of the Catholic Church in America in the 19th century. 5. Name the anarchistic, bi-sexual hater of western civilization from Jamaica and Harlem who, convinced that the Catholic Church alone held the key to social justice and racial harmony, joined the Church in 1944 and worked to promote her until his death. 6. Name the prominent New York society woman who, becoming Catholic, founded the Catholic school system in America and became our first native-born saint. 7. The grandson of what Revolutionary War hero became a general of the Union Army and a Catholic after his visit to pray in a Catholic church in 1862? 8. Name the daily communicant who started the “pop art” movement of the ‘60’s.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

“America has a ‘Statue of Liberty’ on its East Coast; it needs to build a ‘Statue of Responsibility’ on the West Coast to balance it. Without responsibility, liberty just leads to a life devoid of meaning.” – Viktor Frankl

“We will do what no other paper published by colored men has dared to do – give the great Cath-olic Church a hearing and show that it is worthy of at least a fair consideration at the hands of our race, be-ing as it is the only place on this Continent where rich and poor, white and black, must drop prejudice at the threshold and go hand in hand to the altar.” – Daniel Rudd, founder and editor of the American Catholic Tribune, 1886 (see #2 in this week’s Quiz-a-Catholic)

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY

.Do you consider yourself a caring, compassionate & giving person? If so, come & share your gifts with

people in need by joining the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul. You are invited to serve people in need in our St. Angela Merici area. Your assis-tance to people in our parish area needing food, clothes, utility assistance & other needs will be a rewarding experience. Is it time for you to give something back for all you have received? Join us at the next SVDP meeting on Tuesday, September 12th after the 7:00pm Benediction. Our next Food Drive will be September 16/17. We will need the usual non-perishable food items & paper products. We appreciate your help in this ministry.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION The St. Angela Merici Respect Life Committee is asking you to participate

in this year’s spiritual adoption program. This is something very valuable – we can spiritually adopt babies who are known by God to be in danger of abor-tion. Every day for the nine months of the baby’s de-velopment, you will pray the Spiritual Adoption Pray-er, which are on green cards available in the church lobby and on the table by the lunchroom.

Prayer is a very powerful tool, especially intercessory prayer when you pray for the benefit of someone else. Ask that your baby’s mother is given the guidance and support needed so that she will value the life of the child within her womb. A baby’s life may be saved and a young woman may be spared the grief and guilt of an abortion all because you were willing to pray for them!

If you have any questions about this program, please call Debbie Pilla at 314-803-0759

Features: LADIES AUXILLARY of the KNIGHTS OF

COLUMBUS Our parish has an opportunity to participate in a North American effort paying special tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas through the Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose – One Life, One Rose Program. It involves carrying five Silver Roses from Ontario through the U.S. to Monterrey, Mexico. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program began in 1960 as a project of the Columbian Squires of North America to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. The program has continued since then as a project of Squires circles, councils and Fourth De-gree assemblies in several jurisdictions. In 2001, Su-preme Knight Carl A. Anderson expanded the pro-gram by beginning the “Running of the Rose” from the 119th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Ontario. Today five Silver Roses travel from Canada to the United States to Monterrey, Mexico, arriving at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe there on Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In earlier years the one rose was run from London, Ontario, through 10 states in the United States, and then crossing at the International Bridge and ending in Monterrey, Mexico. Now five roses travel simul-taneously. Starting April, five roses will travel simultaneously through 43 states and provinces before entering Mexico for the final leg of the pilgrimage to Monter-rey. The Silver Rose will be stopping at our Parish on September 11, 2017, on its journey through the state. Please join the Knights of Columbus and the Ladies Auxiliary at 7 PM that night for a prayer ser-vice and refreshments afterwards.

COMMEMORATE THE CENTENNIAL OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA AT ST. ANGELA MERICI PARISH Our Lady made a series of appearances to the chil-dren at Fatima, Portugal on the 13th of the month from May to October, 1917. Her message was that if all prayed (especially the rosary), there would be peace. Tragically instead, over 300 million people died in the 20th century in wars and revolutions across the world. We still urgently need peace in our homes, families, region, country and the world. To commemorate 100th anniversary of Fatima, Pope Frances has approved a plenary indulgence for the remission of ones’ sins for the faithful who visit Fatima. He has also made this indulgence available to those who pray in the presence of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima on the 13th of the month from May to October this year. To receive the indulgence, one must also complete the usual conditions of praying for the intentions of the Pope, and receiving the Eu-charist and going to Confession within 8 days be-fore or after. St. Angela Merici parish is blessed to have an Our Lady of Fatima statue, which will be specially dis-played on the 13th of these months. You are most welcome to join in the parish rosary or pray on your own. If you are home bound, you may still receive the indulgence; please call the parish office (838-6565) to make arrangements to receive the sacra-ments. Don’t miss out on this wonderful spiritual oppor-tunity for yourself, a loved one who has died, or a soul in purgatory who has no one to pray for them. Mark your calendar: Wednesday, Sept. 13th Rosary is at 7:15 am

(prior to 8 am Mass) Friday, October 13th Rosary is at 7:15 am

(prior to 8 am Mass)

Evelyn and I thank everyone for the good wishes and celebrating with our

60 years of marriage. We really like being in a parish of so many loving people. Thank you and God Bless you all. Deacon Joe & Evelyn
