Art Club The St Andrews Heights Art Club completed a very successful season on May 6th. We spent the day in the country where we had an opportunity to enjoy the good weather and a picnic lunch . The outing provided us with subject matter for our future paintings. We plan to repeat this again in the Fall when the colors change. Painting classes will resume September 9, 2009. We have had 2 new members join us since Christmas and we are hoping for more in the Fall. Our club encourages group participation and learning. All skill levels are welcome. For more information check our community website or call Betty Schmidt at 282-8949.

Pathways are for Everyone Calgarians are fortunate to have over 600 km of recreational pathways. These multi-use pathways are heavily used by citizens for all types of activities from walking and jogging to cycling, in-line skating and dog walking. The City of Calgary Parks and Pathways Bylaw (20M2003) is designed to ensure the safety of all pathway users. Below are some of the general guidelines to follow when using the parks and path-ways. Signs Please obey all posted signs; they are there to alert you to pertinent rules and regulations. These rules have been designed for your safety and security. Parks Stay on designated trails. Don't disturb or feed wildlife, including birds. The use of motorized vehicles is not allowed (with the exception of wheel chairs). Leash your dog in all parks unless it is a designated off-leash area. Owners must immediately pick up and properly dispose of their pet’s feces. Pathways The speed limit for all users along the pathways is 20 km/hr, unless otherwise posted. Yield to the right of way. Stay on the right side of the pathway except when passing. When on a bicycle, use a bell, whistle or horn when passing others. Dogs must be leashed and kept to the right of the pathway. Everyone, including walkers and joggers, must be visible to other pathway users. Bylaw Officers enforce these regulations with fines between $50 and $500. For fur-ther information on City bylaws, please contact 3-1-1, or visit www.calgary.ca/animalservices and click on “Bylaws”.

River Rafting and Responsible Citizenship

Safe, Reasonable and Respectful Behaviour

For many Calgarians, a hot summer day means a lazy day of floating down the Bow or Elbow River. This is a great way to soak up the sun and spend time with family and friends. Unfortunately, a problem has arisen with this wonderful tradition.

While the majority of Calgarians who go floating behave respectfully and safely, there is a small number who don’t. Urinating in the river, defecating on the banks in people’s yards, cursing, yelling and screaming are ruining the experience for oth-ers. Calgarians whose property backs on to the river are reluctant to be outside, families feel uncomfortable and other rafters are having their experience ruined. Who wants to float down the river when they see someone on a raft in front of them urinating?

Safety is also a concern. At the end of the day, after hours of drinking alcohol, floaters are getting into their cars and driving home. This becomes a safety issue for all Calgarians, not just those who happen to be close to the river. It is also very unsafe to be inebriated while on the water or to be without a floatation device.

As Calgarians, we should all be aware of the applicable laws and bylaws. Open liq-uor is prohibited in public places, including a river. Wearing a flotation device while on the river is mandatory. Littering, urinating and defecating on public or private property are also illegal. By following the bylaws and encouraging others to do so, Calgarians ensure that our rivers will be a pleasant place for everyone.

Let’s enjoy and take advantage of the opportunity to spend a day on the river. And let’s do it responsibly.
