UPCOMING EVENTS:

HEY! WE’RE HIRING! Contact par ish office if interested in one of the following two positions:

Data Entry/Office Aide: Required skills: familiarity with Microsoft Office and basic computer functions. Full or part time starting September or earlier; web design and/or bilingual skills a plus.

Maintenance Person: We need a dedicated person who can take care of maintenance work. If you have or know someone with this skill set, please contact the office so we can make the full– or part-time hire. FISH Food Bank needs canned meats like chicken, turkey, and tuna, as well as pasta (cans are easier than glass jars, and less expensive). Our Valley View Weekend Meals program also starts up again in mid-September, so please consider what you are able to donate for the kids. We'll need individual cartons of 100% apple and orange juice, protein bars, individual mixed fruit cups (we still have enough applesauce!), and individual meal containers such as Chef Boyardee or Hormel. Thank you, St. Andrew's! You are making a difference.

ST. ANDREW’S PRESCHOOL: Last chance to register for the new afternoon 4-5 year old class! Call or visit the parish office for more information; Preschool Handbook now available on parish website.

Upcoming Baptismal Classes: August 18th at 9 am (English) and September 1 at 9:30 am (Spanish).

FORMED in Happiness: Ignatian spirituality addresses the human need for happiness and fulfillment of the whole person. This Tuesday, celebrate the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola with Happiness, a seven-lesson study featuring interviews with psychiatrists, celebrities, New Testament schol-ars, physicists, and priests that uncover the deeper an-swers to life’s most profound questions. By hearing God’s call and responding to it, we take another step in deepening our relationship with God, bringing us a sense of fulfillment, purpose, happiness, and peace. To use FORMED, go to formed.org and use parish code 449536 to make an account. For more Ignatian prayer & reflections, also check out ignatianspirituality.com.

Are you raising a child not born to you? There are an estimated 44,000 children in the State of Washington who

are being raised by relatives. If you are one of those families, the Kinship Navigator Program can help. A program of Catholic Charities Serving Central Wash-ington, the Kinship Navigator Program works to strengthen families and enhance the ability of relatives to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for the children in their care. Navigators can help rela-tives through the legal system to apply for custody, work with schools, assist in applying for federal and state subsidies, receive or maintain child care, obtain referrals for counseling, and connect with resources for support and education. If you are or know of some-one who is caring for grandchildren, nieces, nephews, siblings, or cousins, please contact us and learn how we can assist you. The program serves Yakima, Kit-titas, Benton, Franklin, Walla Walla, Columbia, Gar-field, and Asotin Counties. Spanish- speaking naviga-tors are available. In Yakima, call 509-965-7100 and in Tri-Cities call 509-946-4645.

Talented young violinist Camille Bruya has played at St. Andrews since her middle school years. She leaves to start school at Arizona State. PRO-LIFE CORNER Pro-“choice” advocates are invariably loathe to acknowledge the most important medical and scien-tific fact of all: that life begins at conception. Indeed, they will find no medical textbooks or scientific refer-ence works that say that life does not begin at conception. Many are no doubt aware that some of the world's most prominent scientists and physicians have testified at a Senate committee that life begins at conception. At these same hearings, the pro-choice lobby, though invited to do so, FAILED to produce even a single expert witness who would (or could!) contradict this fact.

Moreover, pro-choice advocates often accuse pro-lifers of having “no plan” for all those lives "forcibly brought into being". They often appear resentful that some lives are being saved instead of destroyed. This is surprising because older pro-choice rhetoric insists that they want abortion to be "safe, legal and rare," despite the fact that more than 3,000 abortions are car-ried out each and every day. How “rare” is that?

Another fact that is often ignored is that there are more than 3,000 crisis pregnancy centers in the United States staffed almost entirely by pro-life volunteers. These centers, unlike abortion clinics, offer expectant mothers a real choice, other than abortion, and provide post-pregnancy medical and other assistance free of charge. So where as the abortion industry has raked in hundreds of millions of dollars since abortion was le-galized in 1973, the motive of pro-lifers, in offering their time and money to support women in problem pregnancy situations, is entirely selfless.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION July 29, 2018. Today’s Gospel reading recounts Jesus’ miracle of feeding the multi-tude. In a miracle that anticipated Jesus’ miracle of feeding the multi-tude, as reported in today’s Gospel, Elisha commanded that a small amount of bread be served to 100 men, and Jesus promised that all would indeed be fed. Elisha trusted that promise, acted upon it, and saw the promise miraculously fulfilled. We, like most people, tend to forget the miracles our Lord can work in everyday life. If we trust in God and live as good stewards, what we accomplish is, in its own way, a miracle.

St. Paul beautifully sums up how our approach to living as Catholics and Christians should be. In today’s Second Reading from his letter to the Ephesians, Paul urges us to live “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit.” Does that describe our parish community?

This cannot happen unless we have the same kind of trust that Elisha had, and which St. Paul had, as well. Paul also says “I urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” This is stewardship at its core. We should not give of our time, talent and treasure because we want to earn God’s love. He al-ready loves us unconditionally.

Jesus knew full well what miracle He was about to perform, but He also saw this as a chance to teach His Apostles, and also show us the way. Philip and the others had already seen Jesus perform many miracles, and there should have been no question in his mind about the divine resources Jesus had at His disposal. Yet Philip hesitated. It is human nature to be doubtful. Yet, as with Elisha, they all ate, and there was much left over. Through this miracle, Jesus is teaching us to trust Him and to do the same in our lives. And, by committing ourselves to a stewardship way of life, we can see our own gifts multiplied. And perhaps even perform our own modern-day miracles.

MASS INTENTIONS Week of July 30th (Sunday 9 AM Mass is offered for the people of the parish)

Tuesday Elaine Ludowese Wednesday Brett Eason† Thursday Doug Holmgren† Friday Myrna Antonich† Saturday 5PM Caroline Spall Hicks†

It’s NFP Week! Natural Family Planning (NFP) is the general title for the scientific, natural and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies. NFP methods are based on the observation of the naturally occurring signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. No drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy. Since the methods of NFP respect the love-giving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative) nature of the conjugal act, they support God's design for married love! For more information about NFP, go to usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/natural-family-planning
