FINANCIAL UPDATE

Now that summer is over and with winter fast approaching, it is important our congregational donations focus efforts on reducing the church’s operating deficit by year end. At the end of September, St Andrew’s operating deficit was $19,864. We encourage everyone to continue to work together to raise the financial resources needed to support our community and accomplish our mission.

BOOK STUDY

Barbara Brown Taylor's book An Altar in the World explores 12 simple, everyday spiritual practices. The book

order has arrived and is ready for pick-up! We begin our discussion group on Monday, November 7 at 7:00 pm.

Parking update

We are grateful that the management of the Foothills Professional Building (at the corner of 16th Ave & 29 St.)

have agreed to allow free parking for St. Andrew's parishioners on Sunday mornings, from 9:00am-1:00pm! It is

roughly a 3 minute walk from their parking lot, through the condo complex and break in the alley fence to St.

Andrew's. If walking this distance is not difficult for you, please use this parking option and leave our parking lot

for those with limited mobility, visitors and newcomers.

OUR ANNUAL TEA & BAZAAR!

Our Christmas Tea and Bazaar is being held on Saturday, 19 November from 1.30 - 4.00pm. There are invitations in the narthex for you to give to your family, friends and neighbours. Tell them we will have our usual delicious tea, plus ever popular bake sale as well as crafts and indoor plants. Admission is $5.00 at the door. A sign up sheet for all the tasks that need to be done, to make our tea a success, is posted downstairs. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Helen Perry 403 286 4084

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

We are a small group of ladies who lovingly create prayer shawls for members and friends of the congregation

who are going through difficult times. As we knit the shawls we pray for God’s blessing on all who receive them

and that the shawl bring them comfort, strength and hope. If you like to knit or crochet and think this ministry is

just right for you, you would be very welcome to join us.

For more information contact: Pauline Booth (403-547-9551) or Hilda Cox (403-247-1127).

ENGAGING IN GOD'S MISSION

The Five Marks of Mission are recognized throughout the Anglican Communion (and beyond!) as a summary of

the church's purpose. They are:

1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom 2. To teach, baptize and nurture new believers 3. To respond to human need by loving service 4. To seek to transform the unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation 5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth Which Mark is most important to you? Which is most challenging? How might we explore them through our worship? Please contact Christine with your ideas and inspiration!

OUTSIDE SPACE WORKING GROUP

We have a new display that depicts the proposed changes to the south side of our church building! Check out

our display at coffee time, and let us know what you think!

the land and of the generations yet to come. Following the film, there will be a question-and-answer session with

Attitude of Gratitude Hello dear St. Andrews!

It was a total surprise and such a blessing from our Lord Jesus to receive the gift of an

"apron" (not one you wear) in front of our stairs to our duplex/house. Ernie Haskewich

instigated the project through his connections in the building world, letting our son-in-

law, Jan, know while keeping Stephen and me in the dark. Ernie wanted us to receive

this surprise as a gift from St. Andrews, as many of you donated to his cause. We can't

thank you enough, for the outpouring of love from our St. Andrews family we have felt,

from this gift and from the beautiful house blessing Rev. Christine performed for us

recently.

South Sudan Emergency Response

UN reports place the number of internally displaced people in South Sudan at 1.6 million, food insecure people

at 4.9 million and the number of South Sudanese who have become refugees since December 2013 at 900,000.

Shortages of food and water, and the outbreak of disease are facing those who have been forced to seek safety

elsewhere.

Due to the increased violence and displacement, PWRDF continues to support those in South Sudan and has

sent an initial grant of $20,000 to the Sudanese Development and Relief Agency (SUDRA) of the Episcopal

Church of South Sudan and Sudan to respond to the immediate needs of internally displaced people. PWRDF

sent a further grant of $30,000 through the ACT Alliance appeal for South Sudanese in Uganda to provide

hygiene items, blankets, clothing, and kitchen kits; to build community and school latrines and communal

shelters for the most vulnerable; to construct 12 classrooms and 450 3-seater school desks; and to provide

inclusive learning and teaching materials, and teacher trainings for those in the reception facilities. PWRDF

partners continue to accompany the South Sudanese in Kenya and Egypt.

Please support PWRDF’s response to this ongoing emergency!

Gifts of the Darkwood Brew Tuesdays, starting October 11 through December 6, 2016, either 1:30-3:00 or 7:30-9:00 pm Gifts of the Darkwood Brew is based on themes explored in Eric Elnes' book Gifts of the Darkwood. The DVD based series explores the proposition that our best help on life's journey often comes from the most unlikely and misunderstood of places, a place known famously, or infamously, as the Dark Wood.

Join us Tuesdays from October 11-December 6, either in the afternoon or the evening. This program is free to attend but please email Anna Greenwood-Lee to register.

"Though commonly understood as a place to be feared and avoided, the Dark Wood is the surest place to meet God. It is a place where you may feel uncertain, empty, lost, tempted and alone. Yet, these feelings - these gifts of the Dark Wood - can be your greatest assets on your journey because they invite you to probe, question and discover. According to the ancients, you don't need to be 'above average'. All you really need to be is struggling.'

Forward To A Friend

Unfortunately, due to Richard Wagamese's ill health, we have to cancel the October 14-16Wisdom Centre event we were so looking forward to. We are very sorry for this situation and ask your prayers for Richard's return to health. We are hopeful that Richard's health will improve and we will be able to reschedule him for some time in 2017. However, just because Richard is not able to be with us does not mean that reading and discussing his book is not worthwhile. The Rev. Dr. Dave Holmes and I will go ahead with the planned book study of One Story, One Song Mondays, September 12, 19 and 26 at 7:30 pm at St. Laurence Anglican Church. If you haven't yet and would like to register for this study, please reply to this email. You still have time to get a copy and get reading if you haven't already! By grace, it turns out that St. Martins Anglican Church is hosting an excellent event on Indigenous Spirituality with Mr. Casey Eagle Speaker the same weekend. We encourage you to consider attending this event instead. Casey Eagle Speaker, or "Sorrel Horse" as he is known by his people, is a member of the Blackfoot Confederation and a member of the Blood Tribe in Southern Alberta. On Friday, October 14 at 7 pm he will delve into the historical background of the Treaty 7 peoples including the residential school experience. On the morning of Saturday, October 15th he will talk about the spirituality of the Blackfoot peoples and that afternoon he will talk about Reconciliation, especially in light of the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The total cost for this weekend including lunch on Saturday is only $15 and to register you can fill out the registration form here or by calling St. Martins directly at 403-249-3014. The Wisdom Centre is also offering a nine week DVD series called Gifts of the Darkwood Brew October 11-December 6 (Tuesdays) either in the afternoon 1:30-3:00 or evening 7:30-9:00. This program is free and all you need to do to register is reply to this email letting us know if you prefer the afternoon or evening sessions. All this and more (including information about our April event with Diarmuid O'Murchu) can be found on our website. Thank you for your support and I hope to see you in the fall, The Rev. Anna Greenwood-Lee Co-Director
