Fr. Burke was born December 17, 1966 and raised in Joliet, IL, the youngest of three sons to Tod and Janet Masters. He was not raised Catholic but attended Providence Catholic High School in order to move closer to his dream of becoming a Major League baseball player. It was at Providence that Fr. Burke fell in love with the Eucharist and the Catholic

Church. He became Catholic his senior year in high school. He went on to play baseball at Mississippi State University, where he played in the College World Series. He was nominated as one of the top student-athletes in the history of Mississippi State University as the SEC celebrated its 75th anniversary. His major league dream did not materialize, so after working as an actuary, and then ticket manager for the Kane County Cougars, Fr. Burke felt the call to become a priest. He attended Mundelein Seminary from 1997-2002 and was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Joliet in June of 2002. He served for four years as associate pastor at St. Mary’s Parish in West Chicago. In June of 2006 he became the Vocation Director for the Diocese of Joliet and began his work traveling around the diocese to encourage young men and women to lay down their lives for the sake of Jesus Christ. In August of 2018, Fr. Burke was named the Director of Lay Formation and Secretary of Evangelization and Catechesis for the Diocese of Joliet. Fr. Burke has been serving as the Catholic Chaplain for the 2016 World Series Champion Chicago Cubs since 2013.

SAINT KATHARINE DREXEL (1858-1955) March 3

Born into Philadelphia society, Katharine was an infant when she lost her mother. Her father remarried and the couple taught their daughters that their wealth was a “gift on loan” to be shared with the poor, whom they fed and cared for in their home. Invited by priest friends to witness firsthand the destitution on Native American reservations, Katharine resolved to devote her inheritance to this apostolate and enter a contemplative order. When, however, in private audience, she begged Leo XIII to send missionaries to staff the schools she was building, the pope replied, “My child, why not become a missionary yourself?” Katharine renounced a twenty-million-dollar fortune and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, adoring Christ present in the Eucharist and ministering to Christ suffering in victims of racial discrimination. Her Sisters established over sixty schools nationwide, including Xavier University, New Orleans, the first dedicated to professional education for African Americans. In 2000, John Paul II canonized “Mother Drexel,” praising her “excellent example of practical charity and generous solidarity with the less fortunate, long the distinguishing mark of American Catholics.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. The Society works in many parishes throughout the world. It is the practice of the St. Vincent de Paul Society to meet them face to face in their homes giving them love, human warmth and dignity. Please join the Legion of Mary every 2nd Monday of the month in a Holy Hour from 8-9 PM in the Church. Our Holy Hour consists of spending some quiet time in the presence of our Lord exposed on the altar, praying a rosary for our priests, religious, and for an increase in vocations; and concludes with Benediction. Our next Holy Hour will be Monday, March 9th. Won’t you please come and spend one hour with us and Jesus.

On Holy Thursday, April 9, join parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle on an evening pilgrimage tour of 7 area churches. We will take time in prayer at each of the churches and conclude with night prayer at St. Andrew at Midnight. There are two buses reserved to leave immediately following the Holy Thursday 7:00 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper at approximately 8:30 PM. You must call the office at 815-886-4165 x 301 to reserve a spot on the bus. The deadline for reservations is Tuesday, April 7. You may also follow along in your own car. SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

RCIA is a faith formation process for adult seekers, both unbaptized and baptized Christians and baptized Catholics, who seek to complete their initiation sacraments (Holy Communion and Confirmation). For more information, contact Barb Sanders at the Adult Faith Formation Office:

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the Baptism of children on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. The requirements are: to be registered in the parish and have an active participation in our parish community for at least 3 months. Register at the parish office for the Baptismal prep class, which is held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., in the school hall. It is important to notify the parish office with the date that you will be attending the class.

FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION

Please see page 9 in the bulletin for Faith Formation information regarding preparation for these important sacraments.

MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS

Diocese requirements include a formal engagement preparation period of at least six months before the date of the weddings and attendance in a marriage preparation program. St. Andrew requires either the bride, groom, or parents of either to be registered as parishioners for at least three months before contacting us to set a date. There are a number of additional requirements. Please contact the Parish Office for additional information.

FUNERALS

Arrangements for a funeral are usually made through the Funeral Director at a funeral home of your choice.

PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK

Hospitals do not inform churches when parishioners are patients. You should ask an immediate family member to contact the Parish Office to request a visit from a priest when sickness occurs or death is imminent. Please contact Barb Sanders to arrange for Communion to be brought to the sick at home, to a hospital, or nursing home.

St. Andrew the Apostle We Care Food Pantry

The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance.

Our pantry is open only to Romeoville residents so proof of residency and an ID must be shown upon sign-in each week. If you are a parishioner of St. Andrew and you find yourself in need of food assistance, you are more than welcome to come to the We Care Food Pantry also. Proof of residency is a utility bill with your name and address on it plus your Driver’s License or State of Illinois ID. That must be brought in each time you come for food assistance.
