THE FEAST OF ST. ANDREW Andrew was the first Apostle to follow Jesus, and introduced his younger brother, Simon (who becomes Peter) to Jesus. According to the New Testament, he was born in the village of Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee during the early first century. Both brothers were fishermen. Andrew's name means strong and he was known for having good social skills. In the Gospel of Matthew, it is said Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee and saw Andrew and Simon Peter fishing. It is then he asked the two to become disciples and "fishers of men." In the Gospel of Luke, Andrew is not initially named. It describes Jesus using a boat, believed to be solely Simon's, to preach to the multitudes and catch a large amount of fish on a night that originally was dry. Later, in Luke 5:7, it mentions Simon was not the only fisherman on the boat, but it is not until Luke 6:14 that there is talk of Andrew being Simon Peter's brother. However, the Gospel of John tells a separate story, stating Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist. When Jesus walked by one day, John the Baptist stated, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" It is then that Andrew and another made the decision to follow Jesus. Little else is said about Andrew in the Gospels, but it is believed Andrew was one of the closer disciples to Jesus. It was he who told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes, according to John 6:8. When Philip wanted to speak to Jesus about Greeks seeking him, he spoke to Andrew first. Andrew was also present at the last supper. Christian tradition says Andrew went on to preach the Good News around the shores of the Black Sea and throughout what is now Greece and Turkey. Andrew was martyred by crucifixion in Patras. He was bound, rather than nailed, to a cross, as is described in the Acts of Andrew. He was crucified on a cross form known as "crux decussata," which is an X-shaped cross or a "saltire." Today this is commonly referred to as "St. Andrew's Cross." It is believed Andrew requested to be crucified this way, because he deemed himself "unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus."

PRAYER OF THE DAY Everliving God, whose apostle Andrew heard the call of your Son and followed, bringing his brother with him: inspire us, like him, to offer ourselves readily for your service and to tell others the good news of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING: Deuteronomy 30:11-14

A reading from the book of Deuteronomy.

Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: ‘Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?” Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?” No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe.’

For the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

Commentary: The setting is the plains of Moab, as the Israelites prepare to cross the Jordan into the Promised Land. The book states that Moses is the speaker, but the laws given in Chapters 12-28 are updated versions of those in earlier books. Times have changed since Sinai: the people were semi-nomads then; now they are farmers and shepherds. It is a time of religious revival, of new commitment to God. They will keep the Law because they love God and then they will receive many benefits including long life.

PSALM 19:1-6

Response: The heavens declare the glory of God.

The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork; One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge…………Response

There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard; Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth.………………Response

There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course. Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound: and nothing is hidden from its heat.……………………..Response

SECOND READING Romans 10:8-18

A reading from the Letter to the Romans

What did Moses say? “The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have; for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.”

For the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

Commentary: Paul has written that the Israelites tried for a right relationship with God but failed to achieve it because they sought it through “works” rather than faith. By massaging Isaiah 28:16 and 8:14, Paul says that God is the impediment that lay in their way. He desires that they be part of God’s plan of salvation because of their “zeal for God”; however, they lack the right relationship with God that now comes from God: that was revealed in Christ. They missed the real meaning of what God has done through Christ, thus failing to embrace Christ as the model for living. God’s freely-given gift of love is readily available (“near you”) through faith. We need only acknowledge that “Jesus is Lord” and believe in Christ’s resurrection by the Father. One who believes this and recognizes Jesus as sovereign is godly and will have new life when Christ comes again. In verse 11, Paul again massages Isaiah: “no one” who believes, whatever his or her ethnic background, will be condemned (“put to shame”) at the Last Day. There is one Jesus – for all people. Everyone who sincerely believes will be saved.

GOSPEL Matthew 4:18-22

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Alleluia!

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew, chapter 4, beginning at the 18th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Commentary: This passage tells of the calling of the first four disciples. (We know “Simon” as “Peter”.) Jesus the teacher invites them to follow him, speaking in their terms (“fish for people”) and fulfils Jeremiah 16:16; there the Lord is “sending for many fishermen” to Israel. They give up their trade and “immediately” begin a radically different way of life. Jesus expects, and receives, prompt obedience. As the gospel continues, Jesus proclaims the “good news” in both word and deed.

Sentence Andrew found his brother, told him, ‘We have found the Messiah!”, and then brought Simon to Jesus. John 1:41-42

Charity of the Month—November Archbishop’s Appeal for ABM

This year, the Archbishop’s November appeal for ABM aims to raise funds to support the work of the Anglican Community in Yarrabah in North Queensland.

The retiring Bishop of North Queensland writes:

“About three years ago the Diocese of North Queensland spent considerable funds in restoring the Church at Yarrabah. In January I commissioned a new priest as a missioner for Yarrabah, the Reverend Annette Woods.

There is an urgent need for resources. Some of them are:

• Provide Faithfulness in Service Training.

• Training is also required in how to lead liturgy and use the Prayer Book. We need more prayer books and Bibles and access to e-pray.

• The hall has undergone repairs but more work will be required. The hall is a neutral location for Christian Education and other ministry activities.

• Resources such as the Bethel Bible Studies would be a great help.

• Funds to send leaders to retreats and diocesan conferences.”

Archbishop Phillip is encouraging the Province to raise $10,000 to help reinvigorate this parish. If more is received, then it will be used to support other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander congregations in desperate need of resources.

PRIESTLY ORDINATION OF TIMOTHY NICHOLSON: It was a great delight recently to be able to announce that Timothy will be ordained Priest at St John’s Cathedral on Saturday 1 December at 10am. We anticipate that many parishioners will want to attend Timothy’s Ordination and we are arranging a bus for those who would like to attend for $25 per person, leaving St Andrews, Caloundra at 7.30am and picking up at Mary MacKillop, Beerwah at

8.00am, before dropping us at The Cathedral. We will then return via the same route, leaving Brisbane about 1.30pm. A sign up sheet is available at each church today. Please add your name as soon as possible. (Payment for the bus trip should be placed in an envelope marked with your name and “Bus Trip” and placed in the offertory plate.)

If you would like to contribute to a gift for Timothy, please include your gift in a marked envelope and place it in the offertory plate today. Following ordination, Timothy will continue as Assistant Priest in our Parish. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Parish. Parish Council and I believe there are some good opportunities for Timothy to help us further our mission and ministry. We know that this will continue to stretch us financially but we see wonderful opportunities for the future. Timothy’s first Eucharist as Priest will be on Sunday 2 December at 8.00am. We will have a combined Eucharist at St Andrew’s that morning and encourage everyone to attend. This will be followed by Brunch—please indicate if you can bring something for brunch that morning on the list on the table. Timothy will then preside for the first time at St Thomas’ on Wednesday 5 December (and we will follow that with morning tea) and then at Mary MacKillop on Sunday 9 December where we will have another special morning tea. Please pray for Timothy and June and their wider family. It is a true delight to be able to continue to journey with them. I ask you to pray for our parish as we take this next step and continue to stretch out in faith. APPOINTMENT OF AARON COATES TO KAWANA WATERS PARISH It was with great delight that we announced that Aaron has been appointed as a Ministry Intern at HTK for 2019. He will complete his Clinical Pastoral Education and then we anticipate he will be ordained Deacon in the middle of the year. This is a very exciting time for Aaron but please pray for him as he leaves Qld Health and takes up this new appointment from 1st January 2019. Aaron will be with us until the end of December and I am arranging a date for a formal farewell in December. If you would like to contribute to a gift for Aaron, please include your gift in a marked envelope and place it in the offertory plate over the coming weeks.

CAN YOU HELP WITH CONSUMABLES FOR ST ANDREW’S CHURCH? We need to replenish a few pantry items currently used in large amounts in St Andrew`s kitchen by various ministry groups each week and a few functions held of late. These items include paper towel rolls, long life milk, white sugar and biscuits. If you are able to help, please tick an item on the list provided on the back table. Donated items should be left in the cane basket on the back seat at the rear of the church. Thank you for your support. Judy Sperling.

CALENDAR FOR 2019: This year, we are planning a new way to consider the Parish Calendar so that all groups can have input and work as a team to create a calendar that doesn’t overlap! All parishioners, especially group leaders, are invited to meet to review the schedule of activities for the upcoming year. In ‘pooling the

wisdom’ we often see clashes and opportunities that one individual may not see. We are inviting ALL PARISHIONERS, especially GROUP LEADERS/FACILITATORS, to bring your ideas for social, spiritual and practical ideas for 2019. We will be meeting on Sunday 9 December from 3.00pm in St Andrew’s Hall. If you are unable to attend, please ensure Heather and Wendy have a copy of ANY ministry group dates by Thursday 6 December. PRAYER & SQUARES THANKSGIVING SERVICE: The beautiful and inspiring Thanksgiving Service for the Ministry of Prayers and Squares on Saturday afternoon was attended by about 45 people, and over 30 quilts were displayed including four new ones that were blessed during the service. Thank you to Deacon Timothy for his organisation and leadership of the service. A big thank you also to the ladies of Prayers & Squares, for those who participated in the service and to all who provided and served the delicious afternoon tea. Special thanks to Liz Little for her lovely music, which added a special touch to the occasion. Heather Creighton. THANK YOU: Thank you from Fred Carr for all the messages of good will received during his recent hospitalisation. Fred went home on Tuesday 20 November. PARISH CHRISTMAS LUNCH. The parish family will host a Christmas Lunch in St Andrew’s Church Hall again this year on Christmas Day. If you would like to attend and/or assist with preparation, or by contributing to the meal, please add your name to the list at the entrance of the Church. Cost per person is $15.00. Children under 10 years free. Money can be placed in an envelope clearly labelled with your name and "Christmas lunch" and placed in the offertory plate at any of the services.
