Reflection on Today’s Readings:

St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California 18th Sunday in ordinary time July 31st, 2011

FOCUS: If we listen to Jesus and follow His teachings our hearts will be fed and we will come to have eternal life - The promise of abundance told by the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled by Jesus, as He fed the hungry people. He continues to feed the hunger of our hearts through the Eucharist. The Eucharist Meal we share today brings us closer to Jesus and is a foretaste of the eternal banquet we are to share in heaven. Let us give thanks. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah proclaims a message of hope. God will renew the Israelites if they turn to Him and walk in His ways. In the second reading, we are reminded that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus feeds five thousand men, not counting women and children. He did this with only five loaves and two fish.

LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

ËTo receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, call the Parish Office at 310-670-2243.

FACT OF LIFE Pregnancy is Not a Disease I strongly oppose the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation today that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate

coverage of three particular practices in almost all private health plans: surgical sterilization; all FDA-approved birth control (including the IUD, “morning-after” pills, and the abortion-inducing drug Ella); and “education and counseling” promoting these among all “women of reproductive capacity.” Pregnancy is not a disease, and fertility is not a pathological condition to be suppressed by any means technically possible. The IOM report claims it would have good reason to recommend mandatory coverage for surgical abortions as well, if such a mandate were not prevented by law. . . . Without sufficient legal protection for rights of conscience, such a mandate would force all men, women and children to carry health coverage that violates the deeply-held moral and religious convictions of many. This new threat to conscience makes it especially critical for Congress to pass the “Respect for Rights of Conscience Act” . . . (HR 1179). (Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, July 19, 2011) Prayer for Life: Father of mercy and grace, we thank you for the gift of our children. Help us to welcome them as we would welcome you, for whenever a new baby is conceived, another life to bear your image and another voice to praise and worship you, is beginning. In Christ's name we pray, Amen.

St. A’s Bible Study - We are currently on break for the summer. We will resume our study of the Gospel of Matthew on September 6th. If you would like to join us in the fall, please call Susan Senia at 310.822.6511 or e-mail at [email protected].

RCIA – Are You Interested In Becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is our greatest joy, as well as our Mission as a Catholic community, to welcome new members. The RCIA is a process of formation and education for those interested in learning about and experiencing the Catholic faith. The process is designed for those baptized in other Christian traditions, baptized Catholics who never received the Sacrament of Eucharist, some who have been away from our faith, or anyone interested in our Catholic faith. It is a faith journey that encourages individuals to broaden and deepen their prayer life, to know God through the Scriptures, to come to know themselves more and to participate more in the parish life. For questions or info, please call Jonette Mauch at 310-670-2243.

18th Sunday of Ordinary Time - In today’s Gospel, Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The message of stewardship is that God’s gifts, shared, will

always be more than enough.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action … July 31st, 2011

CyberTipline Fights Internet Crimes Against Children -The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other government agencies

all work together to fight Internet crimes against children. They’ve established a “CyberTipline,” a reporting mechanism for cases of child sexual exploitation including child pornography, online enticement of children for sex acts, molestation of children outside the family, sex tourism of children, child victims of prostitution, and unsolicited obscene material sent to a child. Reports may be made—24 hours per day, seven days per week—online at www.cybertipline.com or by calling (800) 843-5678.

Bullying Is a Form of Abuse - Did you know that bullying is a form of abuse, and therefore is forbidden in our Catholic schools? Bullying typically consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause victims to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion. Cyberbullying, which involves the use of the Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not tolerated in our Catholic schools. If you suspect bullying of a child at school, please contact the school principal with your concerns. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Dear Parishioners, Vacation Bible School this past week has been a huge success and hats

off go to Jonette Mauch, teachers, and all the generous volunteers who made VBS a lot of fun. Their names are listed here at the bottom of the page. Thank you so much! Meanwhile, construction continues at the school to prepare for our full day Kindergarten. We are also relocating our “Adeste” program classroom and freshening it up. The Library will also receive a multimedia center, and we look forward to exploring new development opportunities for our students and parishioners in this most important field for us as Southern Californians. I hope you are all enjoying the Devotedly, Fr. Gabe

Vacation Bible School 2011 SonSurf Beach Bash We want to thank all our volunteers and teachers for making our Vacation Bible School a huge success. May God bless you all! Gratefully, Father Gabe. St. A’s welcomed 103 students to celebrate Vacation Bible School! 23 Youth Volunteers: Ella, Muriel, Julia, Marisa, Kaylie, Brady, Shannon, Lindsey, Catherine, Molly, Sarah, Katja, Jozefa, Nicki, Hannah, Cynthia, Matthew, Sunny, Conor, McKenna, Isaac, Brianna, Celine Our Teachers: Tim Ramsey, Stephanie Yinger, Meredith Yinger, Kristin Yinger, Alina Di Carlo, Tracy Kane, Maura Reznik, Julia Farina, Sean Smith, Shawna Wiseman.

“Word of the Week” - Some of the words used in the new translation of the Mass may be unfamiliar to some Catholics. Each week we will provide the definitions of some key words which may help to increase your understanding of the rich theology that underlies these texts. Definitions are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition. Abasement - The lowering of one of higher rank. Jesus abased himself in that, though he was God, he lowered himself and became a human being so that he might save us from our sins (see Phil 2:6-11). Adoption: In Baptism, the Holy Spirit transforms us into children of the Father, thereby making us his adopted sons and daughters in the likeness of his eternal Son (see Eph 1:3-6). In this way, the faithful are made “partakers in the divine nature (cf. 2 Pt 1:4) by uniting them in a living union with the only Son, the Savior” (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], no. 1129). In the Sacraments, we become the sons and daughters of God by adoption through Christ Jesus. (...will continue in the following weeks…)

From the Music Director… Will everyone have to use the new translation of the Roman Missal? Yes, the "typical edition" of the Roman Missal that Pope John Paul II gave to the Church is the only official text for the prayers to be used at the celebration of the Eucharist. Some Bishops' Conferences around the world have already completed their process of translation and are presently using this official text. Because there are so many countries with varying cultures yet speak the English language the process of translating the official text into English has taken longer. As of November 27, 2011, it will be the only translation of the Roman Missal to be used for the ordinary celebration of the Eucharist. - Greg Koppenhaver

The family represents a variety of individual and communal journeys, journeys traveled and journeys yet to start. The Holy Family exemplifies these journeys.

They offer us hope in meeting the many challenges we face in our lives. Journeys are central to the complete story about God and us. The Magi, the Holy Family, Jesus and his disciples are all great examples of people who have journeyed. Many journeys are responses to the revelations of truth that engage, fascinate and attract us to travel the road together. Embark on a new journey and invite the Holy Family into your home!

Sign up to have a statue of the Holy Family come to your house for a week. If you are already signed up to receive the Holy Family you will automatically be renewed unless we hear otherwise. Each household will have the opportunity to gather to pray, reflect and spend faith-filled time alone or together. You will also be able to connect with other parishioners through each Holy Family’s travel journal and exchange. This is a unique and interactive experience for all who participate. Please contact Suzette Sornborger @ 310-670-2243 x51 or at [email protected] for more details.
